Book Synopsis The Seasons of the Soul by : Hermann Hesse
Download or read book The Seasons of the Soul written by Hermann Hesse and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This never-before-seen collection of poems offers the lyrical insights and spiritual wisdom of the Nobel Prize-winning author of Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and The Glass Bead Game—who inspired millions as he forged cultural bridges between the East and West. Vowing at an early age “to be a poet or nothing at all,” Hermann Hesse rebelled against formal education, focusing on a rigorous program of independent study that included literature, philosophy, art, and history. One result of these efforts was a series of novels that became counterculture bibles that remain widely influential today. Another was a body of evocative spiritual poetry. Published for the first time in English, these vivid, probing short works reflect deeply on the challenges of life and provide a spiritual solace that transcends specific denominational hymns, prayers, and rituals. The Seasons of the Soul offers valuable guidance in poetic form for those longing for a more meaningful life, seeking a sense of homecoming in nature, in each stage of life, and in a renewed relationship with the divine. Extensive quotations from his prose introduce each theme addressed in the book: love, imagination, nature, the divine, and the passage of time. A foreword by Andrew Harvey reintroduces us to a figure about whom some may have believed everything had already been said. Thoughtful commentary throughout from translator Ludwig Max Fischer helps readers understand the poems within the context of Hesse’s life.

Book Synopsis The Judeo-Persian Poet 'Emrānī and his “Book of Treasure” by : David Yeroushalmi
Download or read book The Judeo-Persian Poet 'Emrānī and his “Book of Treasure” written by David Yeroushalmi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of their long history on Iranian soil the Jews of Iran have produced a large body of literature which has been little studied and published. This volume deals with one of the most prominent Jewish poets of Iran, known as 'Emrānī (1454-1536 C.E.). The book consists of three parts. The first part studies 'Emrānī's time, life and work and analyzes in depth the poet's last major work entitled Ganj-nāme (The Book of Treasure). Ganj-nāme, which is closely modeled after compositions of classical Persian literature, is 'Emrānī's versified commentary of the ethical tractate of the Mishnah commonly known as Pirqey Abot (“The Chapters of the Fathers”). The second part of the book offers the English translation, annotation and source study of Ganj-nāme. The third and last part of the book provides a critical edition of Ganj-nāme.

Book excerpt: Lanterns of the Soul offers a collection of poetry inspired by all the things we love and question-relationships, faith, nature ... life, itself. It is a heartfelt compilation of author Lynda Harris's deepest thoughts and emotions over a lifetime; hers are words we can all relate to, as well as thoughts that make us pause to think and reflect on our own journeys through life. Each poem offers a unique perspective on an idea-words that bring moments to life, giving us reasons to laugh out loud or cry tears of happiness or sorrow. Shedding light on both the extraordinary and mundane experiences of life, these verses trace a passage through one life and reach out to others following the same path. A Letter Just the Same I'm writing to you, Uncle Harold, Though you're one I never knew, To tell you that your love of poems Was passed to me from you. I'm well aware you know me not, For I was very young That day the angels called your name And beckoned you to come. Your sister Mary's oldest girl- They often call me Lynn- For it is I who writes these words- All grown, the child you knew back then.

Download or read book Come, Thief written by Jane Hirshfield and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory, indispensable collection of poems from Jane Hirshfield that centers on beauty, time, and the full embrace of an existence that time cannot help but steal from our arms. Hirshfield is unsurpassed in her ability to sink into a moment’s essence and exchange something of herself with its finite music—and then, in seemingly simple, inevitable words, to deliver that exchange to us in poems that vibrate with form and expression perfectly united. Hirshfield’s poems of discovery, acknowledgment of the difficult, and praise turn always toward deepening comprehension. Here we encounter the stealth of feeling’s arrival (“as some strings, untouched, / sound when a near one is speaking. / So it was when love slipped inside us”), an anatomy of solitude (“wrong solitude vinegars the soul, / right solitude oils it”), a reflection on perishability and the sweetness its acceptance invites into our midst (“How suddenly then / the strange happiness took me, / like a man with strong hands and strong mouth”), and a muscular, unblindfolded awareness of our shared political and planetary fate. To read these startlingly true poems is to find our own feelings eloquently ensnared. Whether delving into intimately familiar moments or bringing forward some experience until now outside words, Hirshfield finds for each face of our lives its metamorphosing portrait, its particular, memorable, singing and singular name. Love in August White moths against the screen in August darkness. Some clamor in envy. Some spread large as two hands of a thief who wants to put back in your cupboard the long-taken silver.
