Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has written this book not only to dedicate it to his daughters, but to inspire, empower and encourage daughters around the world of all ages'. This book is a great tool to catapult daughters into a life of empowerment, inspiration, and strength to become successful at all their present and future endeavors. This book should be read and discussed in many different forums around the world. In his book Letters To My Daughters: Poetic Affirmations of Love From A Father, Avery Washington affirms his adoration and appreciation for his daughters in an incredibly endearing and empowering way. His poems flow from the heart of a protective father to the soul of a young girl who is learning herself and finding her way in the world. His poem, "God's Creation," reminds the reader of who she is and let's her know that she can use her intelligence and beauty to become all God created her to be. "Self Love" is a poignant reminder to all women that the power of love emanates from within and is a gift from God. In "You Are Never Alone," Avery applauds single mothers and charges them to press on and press in. He encourages them keep their heads up in order to be the foundation their children need and recognizes motherhood for the gift that it is. These poems are filled with words of inspiration, wisdom and power. His ability to transcend the page and go deep inside the heart of the reader is astonishing. The world is full of broken women and Avery Washington's desire to minister healing and wholeness through the written word is evidenced throughout this book. Author, Avery Washington's book, Letters to My Daughters comes at a time where it seems obsolete that father's are instrumental in their daughters? lives. It is so refreshing to read a collection of poetry dedicated to celebrating our young girls who will one day appreciate that love of their father. The author so profoundly reminds us that the first love a girl has is that of her father. We believe his purpose for writing this book holds to the fact that young women go through various dilemmas as a result of an absentee father. The love that the author poured into his poetry, on behalf of his daughters, is very inspiring in a society where young girls search for acceptance in all the wrong places. This book of poems is a true gem because the author infuses life lessons, support, encouragement, love, and God to show us that it is essential that a father be present in his daughters? existence. Author, Avery Washington could have just easily spoken these very words to his daughters? on a more personal note. We celebrate that he shared the love he has for his daughters? through poetic versus whereby, other father's will be encouraged to become the first love in their daughters? lives. Letters to My Daughters is written to strengthen the bond of the father/daughter relationship where it will become the norm for a young girl or young lady to truly know her father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kierkegaard's religious discourses - his writings which have explicitly dealt with religion - have historically been given scant attention by philosophers. They have generally been considered to be of less philosophical interest than his 'proper' philosophy. Errant Affirmations radically questions this claim and considers Kierkegaard's religious writings as absolutely central to his philosophical vision. Through close and clear readings of Kierkegaard's work, David Kangas argues that contemporary philosophical themes - gift, temporality, language, death, nothingness, economy and selfhood- are not only evident in the 'religious' works but explored with real depth and fascination. Above all, the book argues that Kierkegaard's positive account of the human condition, his “ontology,” fully emerges only in these discourses. It shows how these discourses are organized around an “errant” kind of affirmation-namely, an affirmation of existence that is without conditions. Such affirmation involves the intensification of life around “today” and coincides with a joy that has no particular cause. It is an affirmation capable of affirming life even amidst its finitude and suffering. Errant Affirmations is a fresh interpretation of Kierkegaard's understudied works that not only opens up a new reading of Kierkegaard but elucidates his 'religious' texts and places them organically within his philosophy as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Buddhist monks of the Song dynasty (960–1279) called the irresistible urge to compose poetry “the poetry demon.” In this ambitious study, Jason Protass seeks to bridge the fields of Buddhist studies and Chinese literature to examine the place of poetry in the lives of Song monks. Although much has been written about verses in the gong’an (Jpn. kōan) tradition, very little is known about the large corpora—roughly 30,000 extant poems—composed by these monastics. Protass addresses the oversight by using strategies associated with religious studies, literary studies, and sociology. He weaves together poetry with a wide range of monastic sources and in doing so argues against positing a “literary Chan” movement that wrote poetry as a path to awakening; he instead presents an understanding of monks’ poetry grounded in the Song discourse of monks themselves. The work begins by examining how monks fashioned new genres, created their own books, and fueled a monastic audience for monks’ poetry. It traces the evolution of gāthā from hymns found in Buddhist scripture to an independent genre for poems associated with Chan masters as living buddhas. While Song monastic culture produced a prodigious amount of verse, at the same time it promoted prohibitions against monks’ participation in poetry as a worldly or Confucian art: This constructive tension was an animating force. The Poetry Demon highlights this and other intersections of Buddhist doctrine with literary sociality and charts productive pathways through numerous materials, including collections of Chan “recorded sayings,” monastic rulebooks, “eminent monk” and “flame record” hagiographies, manuscripts of poetry, Buddhist encyclopedia, primers, and sūtra commentary. Two chapter-length case studies illustrate how Song monks participated in two of the most prominent and conservative modes of poetry of the time, those of parting and mourning. Protass reveals how monks used Chan humor with reference to emptiness to transform acts of separation into Buddhist teachings. In another chapter, monks in mourning expressed their grief and dharma through poetry. The Poetry Demon impressively uncovers new and creative ways to study Chinese Buddhist monks’ poetry while contributing to the broader study of Chinese religion and literature.

Book excerpt: This book examines the speculative core of Karl Barth’s theology, reconsidering the relationship between theory and practice in Barth’s thinking. A consequence of this reconsideration is the recognition that Barth’s own account of his theological development is largely correct. Sigurd Baark draws heavily on the philosophical tradition of German Idealism, arguing that an important part of what makes Barth a speculative theologian is the way his thinking is informed by the nexus of self-consciousness, reason and, freedom, which was most fully developed by Kant, Fichte, and Hegel. The book provides a new interpretation of Barth’s theology, and shows how a speculative understanding of theology is useful in today’s intellectual climate.
