Book Synopsis Such Places as Memory by : John Hejduk
Download or read book Such Places as Memory written by John Hejduk and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 1998-04-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems of an architect whose affection for urban reality and imagined space is as evident in his writing as in his buildings and drawings. The poems of John Hejduk are almost nonpoetic: still lives of memory, sites of possessed places. They give a physical existence to the words themselves and an autobiographical dimension to the architect. Architect Peter Eisenman likens them to "secret agents in an enemy camp."Writing about Hejduk's poems in 1980, Eisenman observed, "Walter Benjamin has said that Baudelaire's writings on Paris were often more real than the experience of Paris itself. Both drawing and writing contain a compaction of themes which in their conceptual density deny reduction and exfoliation for a reality of another kind: together they reveal an essence of architecture itself." This is the first comprehensive collection of Hejduks poems to be published outside an architectural setting.

Book Synopsis The Poet & The Architect by : Christine Stewart-Nuñez
Download or read book The Poet & The Architect written by Christine Stewart-Nuñez and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Poet & The Architect, Christine Stewart-Nuñez explores how the disciplines we devote our lives to influence how we view the world and, subsequently, interact with each other. If, as Louis Sullivan says in the book's epigraph, an architect must possess "the intuition of a poet," the poet/speaker in this collection must also learn to construct her own body of work "using the material / one has." That material includes the relationship the poet and the architect build from their pasts and the blended family they create and nurture together. "My husband writes shelter," Stewart-Nuñez says, "I architect spells." They are spells she invites us to enter and take shelter in. -Grace Bauer
Book Synopsis Analogical Thinking in Architecture by : Jean-Pierre Chupin
Download or read book Analogical Thinking in Architecture written by Jean-Pierre Chupin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth exploration of the rich and persistent use of analogical thinking in the built environment. Since the turn of the 21st century, design thinking has permeated many fields outside of the design disciplines. It is expected to succeed whenever disciplinary boundaries need to be transcended in order to think outside the box. This book argues that these qualities have long been supported by analogical thinking-an agile way of reasoning in which think the unknown through the familiar. The book is organized into four case studies: the first reviews analogical models that have been at the heart of design thinking representations from the 1960s to the present day; the second investigates the staying power of biological analogies; the third explores the paradoxical imaginary of "analogous cities" as a means of integrating contemporary architecture with heritage contexts; while the fourth unpacks the critical and theoretical potential of linguistic metaphors and visual comparisons in architectural discourse. Comparing views on the role of analogies and metaphors by prominent voices in architecture and related disciplines from the 17th century to the present, the book shows how the analogical world of the project is revealed as a wide-open field of creative and cognitive interactions. These visual and textual operations are explained through 36 analogical plates which can be read as an inter-text demonstrating how analogy has the power to reconcile design and theories.
Book Synopsis Julien-David Leroy and the Making of Architectural History by : Christopher Drew Armstrong
Download or read book Julien-David Leroy and the Making of Architectural History written by Christopher Drew Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the career and publications of the French architect Julien-David Leroy (1724–1803) and his impact on architectural theory and pedagogy. Despite not leaving any built work, Leroy is a major international figure of eighteenth-century architectural theory and culture. Considering the place that Leroy occupied in various intellectual circles of the Enlightenment and Revolutionary period, this book examines the sources for his ideas about architectural history and theory and defines his impact on subsequent architectural thought. This book will be of key interest to graduate students and scholars of Enlightenment-era architectural history.

Book Synopsis In the Architecture of Bone by : Alan Semerdjian
Download or read book In the Architecture of Bone written by Alan Semerdjian and published by . This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. "IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF BONE is the spirit of Armenia streaming through the mnemonic of Semerdjian's family and their abode. This 'evidence' exists by means of its words inscribed on a blank beatific hide. And this hide co-respirates as a biography of exile while lingering in the cells of language. Scenic registrations, interior postings via a vivid singularity. Semerdjian condenses the 'undertow' and the droning of the Armenian Diaspora through a stark imaginal thriving. IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF BONE is a book brimming with marvelous seepage and recollection"--Will Alexander. "Alan Semerdjian's IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF BONE reads like a long poem cycle that pulls the reader into an open field in which Semerdjian weaves his explorations of language and art, Armenian history and family. These dynamic poems mingle the ghosts of the past with the pace of contemporary life. This talented, young poet is well worth your reading"--Peter Balakian. "The poems shuttle between the tender and the fantastic...at the core of the poetry is a kind of politic--though he isn't what I would easily call a political poet. Adrienne Rich wrote, 'the moment a feeling enters the body is political.' Alan is that kind of political poet"--Michael Klein.
