Book excerpt: Planting Seeds is a collection of spoken words that have been brought to me over the years. These words are from my heart, mind, and soul brought upon to reflect change. All of my Spoken words are based on my personal experiences. Experiences that have touched my life in one way or another. This collection attempts to breakdown the five sides that GOD has revealed to me. These five sides will help the world understand change through my thoughts and philosophies. My philosophy on life is to empower the minds in our black communities. The first of the five sides that GOD has given me is the bless side. The blessed side shows that nothing is possible without Christ. For he has given me the gift to inspire others. The second side is the love and healing side. Through this side, GOD has shown me how to love. Love is the first essential key to winning others over. A testimony brings about the healing. The third side is the political side. The political side examines the eyes of the oppressed showing them alternatives to their setbacks. The fourth side is the life side. Life is the side I have experienced my trials and tribulations. This is the side that led me to the righteousness of GOD. The final side of me is the personal side. This side allows the reader to come in contact with the author. In conclusion, this collection of spoken-words would help rehabilitate the roles of the black males and the black females. Its positive RAP. This book is essential to the development of our black communities. The media has displayed a sense of falsehood through the disrespect of the Black woman as well as the negative representation of violence within the Black male, through TV as well as Radio. Hopefully this book of spoken-words will inspire a positive change through the wisdom that GOD has bestowed upon me. Now that the instructions has been given, I feel that its my duty to educate all of my blacks peers at large. In comparison to other books of poetry, this book of spoken-words relate to issues of life. That causes the mind to ponder, In essence, producing a change. This collection takes every aspect of life by sides and shows the reader how to change. The result of change is in understanding the sides of who you are. Every side must be understood. - It speaks to the youth. - It speaks to the community. - It speaks to modern day dilemmas. - It offers youth and community an answer to these dilemmas and invites them to talk, think and work together to bring about a positive change. - It speaks to Spirituality. -A strong relationship with GOD as an anchor. - Its proactive and anti violent. -A positive out-look on life.

Book excerpt: A new edition of the #1 NYT’s bestseller by Mark Nepo, who has been called “one of the finest spiritual guides of our time” and “a consummate storyteller.” Philosopher-poet and cancer survivor Mark Nepo opens a new season of freedom and joy—an escape from deadening, asleep-at-the wheel sameness—that is both profound and clarifying. His spiritual daybook is a summons to reclaim aliveness, liberate the self, take each day one at a time, and savor the beauty offered by life's unfolding. Reading his poetic prose is like being given second sight, exposing the reader to life's multiple dimensions, each one drawn with awe and affection. The Book of Awakening is the result of Nepo’s journey of the soul and will inspire others to embark on their own. He speaks of spirit and friendship, urging readers to stay vital and in love with this life, no matter the hardships. Encompassing many traditions and voices, Nepo's words offer insight on pain, wonder, and love. Each entry is accompanied by an exercise that will surprise and delight the reader in its mind-waking ability.

Book excerpt: Poems are like mirrors; they reflect thoughts when you read them. When you close your eyes, they speak to you. They also connect with you in your own frame and then draw you out to think beyond. Sandeep Kishore's poems will draw you out from the normal world to a different realm. They will talk to your heart and also challenge your mind to seek higher, different altitudes. Conflicts between the heart and mind have perhaps existed ever since the beginning of human civilization. Whether in love or in pain, to seek or to give, to understand or to imbibe, to teach or to learn, Sandeep Kishore's poems will connect with you in your own way.

Book excerpt: Hannah Fries, former poetry editor of Orion, has worked with some of the nation's top poets, both in her graduate program at Warren Wilson, and as an editor. It shows in the confident, lyric voice of her debut volume, Little Terrarium. Her range, from giving human unsentimental voice to biblical women -- Mary, Noah's wife, a girl raised from the dead by Jesus -- to capturing Winslow Homer in words in a series devoted to his paintings, to attentive, fresh, surprising looks at our contemporary world, Fries doesn't shy away from what is emotionally true, but manages to do so in her own unique way. We're proud to offer these poems as our next publication.A mind and a mind's eye for art are evident on every page of this fine book. Beyond the beautiful, however, these poems also register a sharp regard for the natural world, for our hands-on knowledge of it, and for the plain fact that we are alive at a time when the natural world is most threatened. That is a practical predicament, but it is also a moral reality. To face the practical is a matter of will; to embrace the moral, as this book makes clear, is a matter of love. The love on these pages is human and searching--such is the love we need for art and the love we seek for wisdom." -- Maurice Manning

Book excerpt: Irma's Seed is dedicated to, and inspired by, the author's high school English teacher, Irma Eareckson, whose brilliant year-long homework assignment in her 1961-62 creative writing class has been long remembered by students who benefited from its challenge and breath of scope. Miss Eareckson asked each student to write a novel, whose chapters were presented in different forms of creative writing, including a short story, free-verse poem, sonnet, one-act play, traditional chapter narrative, convincing dialogue, soliloquy, rhyming poem, etc.-in whatever order the student selected so long as the novel was coherent in the story line, within and among the numerous writing forms. The motto of The Principia School is "As the Sowing, the Reaping," and this volume of beach poems and life poems, published many decades later, may be said to have sprung from Irma's seed. Irma Eareckson's challenging gauntlet thrown to her students so long ago is reflected in the variety of poems in this collection, including haiku, a bit of doggerel paying homage to Ogden Nash, limericks inspired by Edward Lear, and an assortment of autobiographical verses that steps beyond the personal to the universal.
