Book Synopsis Here and Now: Poems by : Stephen Dunn
Download or read book Here and Now: Poems written by Stephen Dunn and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A wonderful example of the poet’s ability to satisfy readers and anticipate their thoughts.”—Elizabeth Lund, Washington Post In his sixteenth collection, Stephen Dunn continues to bring his imagination and intelligence to what Wallace Stevens calls “the problems of the normal,” which of course pervade most of our lives. The poem “Don’t Do That” opens with the lines: “It was bring-your-own if you wanted anything / hard, so I brought Johnnie Walker Red / along with some resentment I’d held in / for a few weeks.” In other poems, Dunn contemplates his own mortality, echoing Yeats—“That is no country for old men / cadenced everything I said”—only to discover he’s joined their ranks. In “The Writer of Nudes” his speaker is in search of the body’s “grammar” but tells his models, “Don’t expect to see yourself as other / than I see you.” Full of grace, wit, humor, and masterful precision, the poems in Here and Now attest to the contradictions we live with in the here and now. Political and metaphysical, these astonishing poems remind us of the essential human comedy of getting through each day. from "The House on the Hill" . . . from out of the fog, a large, welcoming house would emerge made out of invention and surprise. No things without ideas! you'd shout, and the doors would open, and the echoes would cascade down to the valleys and the faraway towns.

Book excerpt: Working at the crossroads of contemporary geographical and cultural theory, the book explores how social spaces function as sites which foreground D. H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf's critiques of the social order and longings for change. Looking at various social spaces from homes to nations to utopian space brought into the here and now the book shows the ways in which these writers criticize and deconstruct the contemporary symbolic, physical, and discursive spatial topoi of the dominant socio-spatial order and envision a more liberating and inclusive human geography. In addition, the book calls for the need to redress the tendency of some spatial theories to underestimate the political potential of literary discourse about space, instead of simply and mechanically appropriating some theoretical concepts to literary criticism. One of the central findings in the book, therefore, is that literary texts can perform subversive interventions in the production of social space through their critical interaction with dominant spatial codes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important to the essays here is the possibility of using logos without the negative, restricting and violent aspects of logos. In this respect I speak about affirmation and about tragic awareness rather than about the tragic itself or tragic conflict, as I read texts of a literary democracy that is already here, texts by Don DeLillo, Tomas Tranströmer, John Ashbery and Thanasis Valtinos, or see arrangements by Lo Snöfall. Indeed it is all about arrangements, about knowing how to affirm and doing it rather than using language and its codes in order to transcribe, however accurate this might be. Arrangements say yes, since they do not raise any absolute boundaries. The arrangement is a logos without logos: it is a cosmos, where affirming is a tragically aware cosmetics. Cosmos is neither the world nor any ordering or embellishment of this world, but an openness as the incalculable accumulation of arrangements that say yes in their awareness that they do not amount to an ontology.
Download or read book Counting Descent written by Clint Smith and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Harvard Doctorate in Poetics launches poetry that explores modern blackness. Clint Smith's debut poetry collection, Counting Descent, is a coming of age story that seeks to complicate our conception of lineage and tradition. Smith explores the cognitive dissonance that results from belonging to a community that unapologetically celebrates black humanity while living in a world that often renders blackness a caricature of fear. His poems move fluidly across personal and political histories, all the while reflecting on the social construction of our lived experiences. Smith brings the reader on a powerful journey forcing us to reflect on all that we learn growing up, and all that we seek to unlearn moving forward. - Winner, 2017 Black Caucus of the American Library Association Literary Award - Finalist, 2017 NAACP Image Awards - 2017 'One Book One New Orleans' Book Selection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Douglas Owens, Sr. (Jimmy) was raised by a father, James Willard Owens, Sr., who could quote every line of Thanatopsis from memory, and did, along with hundreds of other poems. Jimmy learned early on that poetry was a valuable tool for expressing feelings. The feelings that Jimmy harbored, as a result of life situations, were many and pervasive. Busy making a living for himself and his family, the missing factor for him to put those feelings to paper was time. Both fate and circumstances furnished him that time to reflect and to write. Many of the poems in this book were written in that space of time. Today, Jimmy is semi-retired living quietly in East Texas. He owns his own big rig and drives short hauls in order to be home at night with his wife.

Book excerpt: There's a poem I'd like you to read...... Book one A Piece Of Rope was written over a period of 30 years. I am now living in the Here and Now. My second book contains 79 new poems split into 4 sections. Poems for Humour, Poems for Thought, Poems Telling Stories and Poems For Support. Poems For Humour takes a lighter look at life telling of things we may remember from childhood, events that may have happened and some written just for fun! Poems Telling Stories is just that. They contain surprising facts and trivia you may never have known, all written of course in poetic language, all rhyming! Poems For Thought contains an anthology of topics on which to ponder, something to think about be it an everyday occurrence we rarely give much thought to or a future event planned. Some words may even echo your own thoughts and feelings on a subject. My last section contains poems offering support, whether it reminds you how wonderful you are or reassures you in a time of need that you are never on your own. Some of these may rest with you a while during periods of silence that we all experience from time to time. Here and Now is a collection of poems for where I am at this present point in time. I hope you enjoy my words of humour, amazing stories, thoughtful questions and words of comfort. Happy Reading, Kathryn

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HAUNTED HOUSES ARE REAL I grew up in a wonderful, historic small town in South Carolina. Even today, I still love the history of this old town and the many friends I have come to know. In the 1980s, years later when I was grown and had children of my own, I rented an apartment in one of the historical houses that had been renovated into apartments in 1963. We were excited and felt fortunate to have found such an amazing place to live and be back in my hometown again. However, this unusual house had some interesting things happen in it while we lived there; much to my surprise. As if it were planned by some unseen being, my children and I began noticing some very unusual occurrences. My daughter was twelve years old at the time and was a cheerleader in the school she attended. Each night, she placed her cheerleading pom-poms on the corners of the bed posts of the bed, which she and I both shared. I always watched the news at night before bedtime. One winter night in 1983 around 11:15 p.m., the pom-poms began twisting like little pieces of paper as if they had an energy source from something I didnt understand. One pom-pom flew off of the bedpost and landed in the corner across the room. The next night around the same time, the other pom-pom flew off its post into the same corner. I was so shocked! I left them both lying there until my daughter had to use them again, which was the next day. The old house was huge and cold. On another winter night, my daughter and I were sleeping in the same room and the same bed as before. All of a sudden, my feet began feeling hot, so I took off my socks. I left them under the covers in case I needed them later. About thirty minutes later, the socks began moving up toward me under the cover, to the edge, and over the end of the bed. I was so scared I couldnt move! My daughter was still sleeping. Then a pair of pillows began to move across the wooden part of the foot of the bed at the end, and landed beside the socks. When this happened, I quickly awoke my daughter and we got out of that bed and that room. When I went to check the room the next morning, the socks were placed side by side and the pillows were arranged as if they were for show. At this point, I felt that I needed an outside opinion of my experiences. I then called one of the universities I was acquainted with about my experiences. They wanted to send a scientist to visit me and the house. However, my daughter was against it. They sent an engineer instead. The engineer, after much observation, informed me that I and my daughter were clairvoyant and that some form of an entity was in the house. He said that a lot of things that was going on could possibly be explained based on the history of the house, but not all of them. From time-to-time, several other unexplained incidences happened before I decided to move away from all of this. Sometimes, the telephone receiver would jump off its cradle, Christmas bulbs would swing back and forth on the tree, and water kept coming on in the bathroom when no one was present. My daughter and I had no choice but to leave this unpredictable place. Soon after, we moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. We thought we had left the past behind, however, in our new house, locks and doors would open, as well as other things that occurred. Over the years since then, things seemed to have calmed down. Even though I have been told that my daughter and I could both have psycokinesis; she denies her powers.
