Book excerpt: An examination of telepresence technologies through the lens of contemporary artistic experiments, from early video art through current “drone vision” works. "Telepresence” allows us to feel present—through vision, hearing, and even touch—at a remote location by means of real-time communication technology. Networked devices such as video cameras and telerobots extend our corporeal agency into distant spaces. In Here/There, Kris Paulsen examines telepresence technologies through the lens of contemporary artistic experiments, from early video art through current “drone vision” works. Paulsen traces an arc of increasing interactivity, as video screens became spaces for communication and physical, tactile intervention. She explores the work of artists who took up these technological tools and questioned the aesthetic, social, and ethical stakes of media that allow us to manipulate and affect far-off environments and other people—to touch, metaphorically and literally, those who cannot touch us back. Paulsen examines 1970s video artworks by Vito Acconci and Joan Jonas, live satellite performance projects by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz, and CCTV installations by Chris Burden. These early works, she argues, can help us make sense of the expansion of our senses by technologies that privilege real time over real space and model strategies for engagement and interaction with mediated others. They establish a political, aesthetic, and technological history for later works using cable TV infrastructures and the World Wide Web, including telerobotic works by Ken Goldberg and Wafaa Bilal and artworks about military drones by Trevor Paglen, Omar Fast, Hito Steyerl, and others. These works become a meeting place for here and there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What may a German entrepreneur do if from Chinese customers permanently horror news are arriving, although his company otherwise enjoys satisfied customers all over the world? Bernhard Wessling drew the conclusions. Jettisoning all his prejudices and fears, he moved into the boom town of ShenZhen, near HongKong. Six years he lived and worked in China, read many books about China and rejected all advice. He traced and found his own way, and he succeeded. The author – called "LaoWei" by his Chinese friends – introduces the readers to China in an uncommon manner: humorously, excitingly and laxly telling. He presents fireworks of incidents that develop faster and faster. Beginning with his own fears and the first contacts, he lets the readers witness the setup of his company, the creative solutions to countless problems and the discovery of intriguing oases of nature. The scenes, sometimes touching, sometimes slapstick-like, sometimes profoundly serious, interlock and generate in the heads of the readers a sequence of bright and moving pictures. The observations of the author deeply delve below the surface. He avoids the jargon of standard China books and manuals about how to have success in China and what to strictly avoid. Rather, the reader finds a lively description of how a successful business network was established. The author illustrates the story-telling non-fiction book with more than 140 of his own photos taken of the life on the streets, in the parks and of astonishing nature discoveries, right in the mega town of ShenZhen.

This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Killing in war isn't murder.' 'But it feels like it, before God. A battlefield is the best place to hide a corpse ...isn't that what they say?" The Law of War, if there is such a thing, does it override all laws?' 'No.' ܀܀܀ Tirpitz-the largest battleship in Europe-was launched by Hitler's navy in 1939, with a crew of over 2,500. No other target is comparable, Winston Churchill said at the start of World War II. On November 12, 1944-after facing little direct action-Tirpitz was bombed and sunk outside Tromsø, Norway by the British. 971 men died. In this stunning novel, acclaimed Norwegian poet Ingrid Storholmen resurrects the lives, trials and dreams of the men on board-and that of their wives, lovers, family and the local Norwegians who encountered the ship-with profound immediacy and grace. Through monologues, conversations and letters Stormholen traces the personal journeys of those caught in the war. Young farmhands like Otto-hopeful about escaping anonymity and starting a new life; educated skeptics like Kaspar-forced to enlist to keep his father out of jail; fascists like Carl-fighting for the purity of the Aryan race; young Norwegian women like Berit-who swaps thankless domestic drudgery for shipyard cleaning; among countless others. Here Lay Tirpitz is an immersive chorus of voices waiting for life to begin, or death. It shows us the beauty, vulnerability-and ugliness-of men and women, in a world overrun by hatred and power. Now, when such forces are in ascendance yet again, Storholmen reminds us of the human cost of war. In this scintillating English translation, we have a timely masterpiece: audacious, sensuous and devastating. ܀܀܀ 'Storholmen writes fantastically: taut and plain, but at the same time poetic and extremely gripping....she reminds us why literature is important, because it can impart something which cannot be expressed in other ways.'-Vart Land

Book excerpt: This book examines the Trump phenomenon and presidency as fascist. Fascism here connotes not generically "bad" politics or a consolidated political-economic regime (Mussolini’s Italy or Hitler’s Germany) but a set of political, movement, and ideological traits understood within the context of the neoliberal-capitalist era. While Trump’s election defeat is a respite, the nation is far from out of the neofascist woods. Defeating the menace will require political and societal restructuring far beyond what is imagined by Democrats. This argument is developed across seven chapters that recount Trump’s assault on the 2020 election, specifically define the meaning of fascism as it is used in this book, demonstrate the neofascist nature of the Trump presidency, engage intellectual class Trumpism-fascism-denial, analyze the Trump base, root Trumpism in a longstanding and indeed founding American white nationalism, examine why Trump rose to power when he did, and suggest paths for fascism-proofing the USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Trump era’s savviest insiders, one name stands especially tall: Kellyanne. As a highly respected pollster for corporate and Republican clients and a frequent television talk show guest, Kellyanne Conway had already established herself as one of the brightest lights on the national political scene when Donald Trump asked her to run his presidential campaign. She agreed, delivering him to the White House, becoming the first woman in American history to manage a winning presidential campaign, and changing the American landscape forever. Who she is, how she did it, and who tried to stop her is a fascinating story of personal triumph and political intrigue that has never been told…until now. In Here’s The Deal, Kellyanne takes you on a journey all the way to the White House and beyond with her trademark sharp wit, raw honesty, and level eye. It’s all here: what it’s like to be dissected on national television. How to outsmart the media mob. How to outclass the crazy critics. How to survive and succeed male-dominated industries. What happens when the perils of social media really hit home. And what happens when the divisions across the country start playing out in one’s own family. In this open and vulnerable account, Kellyanne turns the camera on herself. What she has to share—about our politics, about the media, about her time in the White House, and about her personal journey—is an astonishing glimpse of visibility and vulnerability, of professional and personal highs and lows, and ultimately, of triumph.

Book excerpt: From Here to Denmark: The Importance of Institutions for Good Governance represents the journey of developing nations from a state of poor governance - that manifests itself in various forms, such as lack of respect for rule of law, delay (and even denial) of justice, a capricious and corrupt ruling elite, lives deprived of basic human dignities and marked with fear and insecurity - to a state of good governance, reflected in predictability, accountability, and fairness in governance matters, and the strong presence of the rule of law. Drawing on experiences of some countries which have made the transition to 'Denmark' over time, the book identifies basic enablers which help a society to make the journey from here to Denmark. These are: building sufficient human capital (education and health) and enabling the effective participation by citizens in having a meaningful say in how they are governed.

Book excerpt: Ten years ago, Kate Braestrup and her husband Drew were enjoying the life they shared together. They had four young children, and Drew, a Maine state trooper, would soon begin training to become a minister as well. Then early one morning Drew left for work and everything changed. On the very roads that he protected every day, an oncoming driver lost control, and Kate lost her husband. Stunned and grieving, Kate decided to continue her husband's dream and became a minister herself. And in that capacity she found a most unusual mission: serving as the minister on search and rescue missions in the Maine woods, giving comfort to people whose loved ones are missing, and to the wardens who sometimes have to deal with awful outcomes. Whether she is with the parents of a 6-year-old girl who had wandered into the woods, with wardens as they search for a snowmobile rider trapped under the ice, or assisting a man whose sister left an infant seat and a suicide note in her car by the side of the road, Braestrup provides solace, understanding, and spiritual guidance when it's needed most. Here if You Need Me is the story of Kate Braestrup's remarkable journey from grief to faith to happiness. It is dramatic, funny, deeply moving, and simply unforgettable, an uplifting account about finding God through helping others, and the tale of the small miracles that occur every day when life and love are restored.

Book excerpt: Dick, a blunt and bawdy Philly sports fan, finds himself in an assisted living facility following a stroke. Determined to regain his independence, he does daily laps around the grounds with his quad cane. But when recovery never comes, and days swell into years, Dick finds purpose instead by studying his fellow residents, chronicling their odd obsessions and their nasty arguments, their breakdowns, their drunken debaucheries—and yes, even their sexual escapades. Dwell Here and Prosper is a gritty but heartfelt novel, heavily informed by the author’s father and his experiences in assisted living near Philadelphia in the 90s. With its set of memorable outcasts—a shady jokester who insists he worked for the FBI, a schizophrenic Catholic who roams local cemeteries at night in search of the Virgin Mary, a twenty-six-year-old whose teeth mysteriously fell out, a middle-aged alcoholic who prostitutes herself to other residents for booze and cigarettes—it’s a One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for a different generation and a different kind of institution. This timeless book offers a funny yet honest meditation on aging and community, and what it means to thrive in purgatory.
