Book excerpt: I started writing poetry when I was seventeen years old; I found out that when you put your thoughts into words sometimes magic happens. I'm not talking about genies popping out of a bottle or anything like that, but in how I see things clearer and how beautiful this world truly is. I found out later in life how much easier it was to find a date in high school. I used to try and talk to girls and found out sometimes I'd get a little gun shy and pass up my chance. Then one day, I wrote a poem for this girl I had my eye on. I walked up to her and handed her the poem and then walked away. Later she approached me and we went out on a date. I found the magic potion to breaking the ice (so to speak) was a piece of paper and a writing pen. I learned how to put my thoughts down on a piece of paper, which later I put into a blank book that I would write my poems in. After I was told by at least fifty or so people that I should share these poems to others, I sat down and sorted out the poems I thought could touch your heart the best. I hope my poems are inspirational enough to help you create your own book.

Book excerpt: Amy Fleury’s bewitching new collection of poems, Sympathetic Magic, unveils the everyday manifestations of sympathy as well as the connections wrought by “sympathetic magic”—that indelible tether that binds people, places, and objects across time and distance. Fleury’s lyrics journey across the landscapes of childhood and old age, body and spirit, past and future, exploring the boundless permutations of sympathy as it appears in the most surprising locations. Connections reveal themselves in the aggressive silence of the small town or the round penmanship of a loved one, and echo throughout the solitude and regeneration of the forest as well as the antiseptic air of the hospital. At the center of these travels lies the narrator, stretching her limbs from the heart of the heartland, her body a compass summoning us from all directions, emphasizing with tender simplicity that “we all live under the self-same moon, no matter the phase.”

Book excerpt: A two-person memoir that explores education, prison, possibility, and which children our world nurtures and which it shuns. At the books core are two stories that speak up for human imagination, spirit, and the power of art. "A boy with no one to listen becomes a man in prison for life and discovers his mind can be free. A woman enters prison to teach and becomes his first listener. And so begins a twenty-five year friendship between two gifted writers and poets. The result is By Heart a book that will anger you, give you hope, and break your heart." - Gloria Steinem Judith Tannenbaum and Spoon Jackson met at San Quentin State Prison in 1985. For over two decades they have conferred, corresponded and sometimes collaborated, producing very different bodies of work resting on the same understanding: that human beings have one foot in darkness, the other in light. In this beautifully crafted exploration, part memoir, part essay, Tannenbaum and Jackson consider art, education, prison, possibility, and which children our world nurtures and which it shuns. At the book's core are two stories that speak for human imagination, spirit, and expression. Judith Tannenbaum is a nationally respected educator, speaker, and author. Among her books are the memoir, Disguised as a Poem: My Years Teaching Poetry at San Quentin; two books for teachers: Teeth, Wiggly as Earthquakes: Writing Poetry in the Primary Grades and (with Valerie Chow Bush) Jump Write In! Creative Writing Exercises for Diverse Communities, Grades 6-12; and six poetry collections. She currently serves as training coordinator with WritersCorps in San Francisco. Born into a family of fifteen boys in Barstow, California, Spoon Jackson was sentenced to Life Without Possibility of Parole when he was twenty years old. Spoon discovered himself as a writer at San Quentin; played Pozzo in the prison's 1988 production of Waiting for Godot; and has written, published, and received awards for plays, poetry, novels, fairy tales, short stories, essays, and memoir during the more than thirty years he has been behind bars. His poems are collected in Longer Ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Cacciotti began writing poetry when he was seventeen years old. He found that sometimes when thoughts are written into words, magic happens. Says Joe, "I'm not talking about genies popping out of bottles but how I am able to see things more clearly. How beautiful this world truly is!" Joe tells of being shy as a young man and missing opportunities to talk to the special ladies he liked. One day, he wrote a poem for a girl he had his eye on but was too shy to ask on a date. "I walked up to her, handed her the poem, and walked away. Later, she approached me, and we went out on a date. I found the magic potion to breaking the ice was a piece of paper and a writing pen." Joe began collecting his writings in a notebook. After being told by many different people that he should share his writings with others, he published the ones he thought would touch hearts the most. Joe received a prestigious award for that first book, Poems for the Heart, as being one of the Top Five Most Inspirational Books of 2011. "I hope my poems are an inspiration to all and will help others find their own magic." "Poems for the Heart, Volume II" is the next presentation in Joseph Cacciotti's collection of poetry.
