Book excerpt: In this debut collection, the author presents an array of short stories and poems that range from heart-warming to thought-provoking, with a twist of mathematical intrigue. While the tales are not destined to be remembered as the greatest literature of all time, each piece is a testament to the author's passion for writing and storytelling. The eclectic mix of stories includes everything from riding a BMW with no helmet to the significance of Aram Saroyan's one-word poems, and even delves into prime numbers with three mathematical chapters. While the author acknowledges the challenges of being a writer in the modern era, this collection stands as proof that with perseverance and dedication, anything is possible. The table of contents alone showcases the author's commitment to producing unique and original content. Whether it's exploring the life and work of Crad Kilodney or investigating a false proof of Nietzsche's eternal recurrence, the author's writing style is sure to captivate and inspire readers. With this collection, the author has realized a lifelong dream of publishing a book. And while it may not be perfect, the author's passion and commitment to the craft shine through in every story and poem. This book is a reminder that creativity and dedication can lead to great things, and that even the most seemingly disparate topics can be woven together to create something truly unique and special.

Download or read book Poetry and Displacement written by Stan Smith and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last hundred years have been an era of unprecedented displacements: the accelerated drift of rural populations to the metropolis, the spread of these cities into successive empires, and the resulting diasporas that have forged the modern United States and any number of smaller nations. These processes have fostered a poetry of exile and expatriation intimately bound up with the experience and culture of modernity. Poetry and Displacement is a thought-provoking and challenging examination of globalized displacement in the work of some of our most critically-acclaimed poets, including Christopher Middleton, Philip Larkin, and Derek Walcott.
Book Synopsis The Poetics of Utopia by : Stewart Cole
Download or read book The Poetics of Utopia written by Stewart Cole and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the work of two of the 20th-century's most politically engaged poets - W. B. Yeats and W. H. Auden - this book unpacks how they directly confront the concept of "utopia," how they engage with utopia as a literary genre, and how their work conceives of poetry as a utopian artform capable of uniquely embodying our social aspirations. Despite consistently projecting visions of more ideal futures through both its subject matter and its form, poetry is not often counted among the annals of utopian literature. Through an examination of these two great writers' poems, essays, reviews, and other writings, with a focus on many of their best-known poems, this book highlights both the pervasive presence of a utopian impulse in their work and the importance of their contributions to discussions of utopia's meaning and relevance in both their own politically fraught era and ours.

Book Synopsis The Dawn of Political Nihilism by : Professor David Ohana
Download or read book The Dawn of Political Nihilism written by Professor David Ohana and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the turbulent period between 1870 and 1930, the contours on modernity were taking shape, especially the connections between technology, politics and aesthetics. The trilogy The Nihilist Order traces the genealogy of the nihilist-totalitarian syndrome. Until now, nihilism and totalitarianism were considered opposites: one an orderless state of affairs, the other a strict regimented order. On closer scrutiny, however, a surprising affinity can be found between these two concepts that dominated the history of the first half of the twentieth century. Starting with Nietzsche's philosophy, this book traces the development of an intellectual school characterised by the paradoxical dual purpose of a wish to destroy, coupled with a strong desire to create imposing structures. This explosive combination of nihilist leanings together with a craving for totalitarianism was an ideal of philosophers, cultural critics, political theorists, engineers, architects and aesthetes long before it materialised in flesh and blood, not only in technology, but also in fascism, Nazism, bolshevism and radical European political movements. Friedrich Nietzsche, Georges Sorel, the Italian Futurists, led by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, and Ernst Jünger were all well-known intellectual and cultural figures. Here they are seen and understood in a different light, as creators of a modern political mythology that became a source of inspiration for belligerent ideological camps. Among the ideas propagated by this school, and later adopted by totalitarian regimes, were historical nihilism, a revolt against the rationalistic and universalistic pretensions of the Enlightenment, an affirmation of the dynamism of modern life, and the replacement of the traditional Judeo-Christian values of good and evil by other dualities such as authenticity and decadence. Concurrently there took place affirmation of the technological era, the creation of a 'new man' and a violent order, and the birth of a new political style in place of traditional world-views. When channelled into the political sphere, these aesthetic nihilist ideas paved the way for the rise of totalitarianism.

Download or read book Erotic Utopia written by Olga Matich and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first generation of Russian modernists experienced a profound sense of anxiety resulting from the belief that they were living in an age of decline. What made them unique was their utopian prescription for overcoming the inevitability of decline and death both by metaphysical and physical means. They intertwined their mystical erotic discourse with European degeneration theory and its obsession with the destabilization of gender. In Erotic Utopia, Olga Matich suggests that same-sex desire underlay their most radical utopian proposal of abolishing the traditional procreative family in favor of erotically induced abstinence. 2006 Winner, CHOICE Award for Outstanding Academic Titles, Current Reviews for Academic Libraries Honorable Mention, Aldo and Jean Scaglione Prize for Studies in Slavic Languages and Literatures, Modern Language Association “Offers a fresh perspective and a wealth of new information on early Russian modernism. . . . It is required reading for anyone interested in fin-de-siècle Russia and in the history of sexuality in general.”—Bernice Glatzer Rosenthal, Slavic and East European Journal “Thoroughly entertaining.”—Avril Pyman, Slavic Review
