Book excerpt: This is an anthology of English verse from the Middle Ages to recent times, from both sides of the Atlantic. Special emphasis has been given to poetry by writers of the Great Plains region (both Canadian and American) and by Aboriginal poets. Intended for introductory classes, poems have been selected with an eye to works--not necessarily easy ones--which address experiences and ideas more readily available to beginning university students and which are more direct and straightforward in expression than many currently anthologized.

Book Synopsis Sensibility and Female Poetic Tradition, 1780–1860 by : Dr Claire Knowles
Download or read book Sensibility and Female Poetic Tradition, 1780–1860 written by Dr Claire Knowles and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that the end of the eighteenth-century witnessed the emergence of an important female poetic tradition, Claire Knowles analyzes the poetry of several key women writing between 1780 and 1860. Knowles provides important context by demonstrating the influence of the Della Cruscans in exposing the constructed and performative nature of the trope of sensibility, a revelation that was met with critical hostility by a literary culture that valorised sincerity. This sets the stage for Charlotte Smith, who pioneers an autobiographical approach to poetic production that places increased emphasis on the connection between the poet's physical body and her body of work. Knowles shows the poets Susan Evance, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning advancing Smith's poetic strategy as they seek to elicit a powerful sympathetic response from readers by highlighting a connection between their actual suffering and the production of poetry. From this environment, a specific tradition in female poetry arises that is identifiable in the work of twentieth-century writers like Sylvia Plath and continues to pertain today. Alongside this new understanding of poetic tradition, Knowles provides an innovative account of the central role of women writers to an emergent late eighteenth-century mass literary culture and traces a crucial discursive shift that takes place in poetic production during this period. She argues that the movement away from the passionate discourse of sensibility in the late eighteenth century to the more contained rhetoric of sentimentality in the early nineteenth had an enormous effect, not only on female poets but also on British literary culture as a whole.
Book Synopsis Classical Chinese Poetry in Singapore by : Bing Wang
Download or read book Classical Chinese Poetry in Singapore written by Bing Wang and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the essence of Chinese traditional culture, classical Chinese poetry in Singapore played a very important role in the social and cultural development of Singapore’s Chinese community. Numerous poems depicted the unique scenery of tropical rainforest and the customs with a Nanyang flavor, recorded the various historical events from the colonial era, the World War II to the independent nation, and reflected the poets’ multiple feelings. This book sketches out the brief history of classical Chinese poetry in Singapore over a hundred years, and focuses on the complex identity of poets from different generations, the function of literary societies in the construction of cultural space and the influence of modern media on the development of classical Chinese poetry based on the text interpretation. In addition, the author attempts to define different types of poetry writing using diaspora literature and Sinophone literature. The discussion of these topics will not only expand the research horizon of Chinese literature, but also provide a meaningful reference to the studies of the worldwide Chinese overseas, especially in Southeast Asia.

Book Synopsis Neoclassical Satire and the Romantic School 1780–1830 by : Rolf P. Lessenich
Download or read book Neoclassical Satire and the Romantic School 1780–1830 written by Rolf P. Lessenich and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Complete Poetry by : George Herbert
Download or read book The Complete Poetry written by George Herbert and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wonderful edition of Herbert's poetry, edited by his acclaimed biographer John Drury and including elegant new translations of his Latin verse by Victoria Moul. George Herbert wrote, but never published, some of the very greatest English poetry, recording in an astonishing variety of forms his inner experiences of grief, recovery, hope, despair, anger, fulfilment and - above all else - love. This volume, edited by John Drury, collects Herbert's complete poetry - including such classics of English devotional poetry as 'The Altar', Easter-Wings' and 'Love'. It also includes the verse Herbert wrote in Latin, newly translated into English by Victoria Moul. George Herbert was born in 1593 and died at the age of 39 in 1633, before the clouds of civil war gathered. He showed worldly ambition and seemed sure of high public office and a career at court, but then for a time 'lost himself in a humble way', devoting himself to the restoration of a church and then to his parish of Bemerton, three miles from Salisbury. When in the year of his death his friend Nicholas Ferrar published Herbert's poems under the title The Temple, his fame was quickly established. John Drury is Chaplain and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. His books include The Burning Bush (1990), Painting the Word (1999), and, most recently, Music at Midnight, the culmination of a lifetime's interest in Herbert. Victoria Moul is Lecturer in Latin Literature and Language at Kings College London. She is author of Jonson, Horace and the Classical Tradition (2010) and editor of Neo-Latin Literature (2014).
Book Synopsis Romanticism and Women Poets by : Harriet Kramer Linkin
Download or read book Romanticism and Women Poets written by Harriet Kramer Linkin and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most exciting developments in Romantic studies in the past decade has been the rediscovery and repositioning of women poets as vital and influential members of the Romantic literary community. This is the first volume to focus on women poets of this era and to consider how their historical reception challenges current conceptions of Romanticism. With a broad, revisionist view, the essays examine the poetry these women produced, what the poets thought about themselves and their place in the contemporary literary scene, and what the recovery of their works says about current and past theoretical frameworks. The contributors focus their attention on such poets as Felicia Hemans, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Charlotte Smith, Anna Barbauld, Mary Lamb, and Fanny Kemble and argue for a significant rethinking of Romanticism as an intellectual and cultural phenomenon. Grounding their consideration of the poets in cultural, social, intellectual, and aesthetic concerns, the authors contest the received wisdom about Romantic poetry, its authors, its themes, and its audiences. Some of the essays examine the ways in which many of the poets sought to establish stable positions and identities for themselves, while others address the changing nature over time of the reputations of these women poets.
