Book Synopsis Utopias of Otherness by : Fernando Arenas
Download or read book Utopias of Otherness written by Fernando Arenas and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forges a new understanding of how these two Lusophone nations are connected. The closely entwined histories of Portugal and Brazil remain key references for understanding developments--past and present--in either country. Accordingly, Fernando Arenas considers Portugal and Brazil in relation to one another in this exploration of changing definitions of nationhood, subjectivity, and utopias in both cultures. Examining the two nations' shared language and histories as well as their cultural, social, and political points of divergence, Arenas pursues these definitive changes through the realms of literature, intellectual thought, popular culture, and political discourse. Both Brazil and Portugal are subject to the economic, political, and cultural forces of postmodern globalization. Arenas analyzes responses to these trends in contemporary writers including Jose Saramago, Caio Fernando Abreu, Maria Isabel Barreno, Vergilio Ferreira, Clarice Lispector, and Maria Gabriela Llansol. Ultimately, Utopias of Otherness shows how these writers have redefined the concept of nationhood, not only through their investment in utopian or emancipatory causes such as Marxist revolution, women's liberation, or sexual revolution but also by shifting their attention to alternative modes of conceiving the ethical and political realms.

Book Synopsis Spanish American Authors by : Angel Flores
Download or read book Spanish American Authors written by Angel Flores and published by New York : Wilson. This book was released on 1992 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late scholar and critic Flores (1900-1992) selected some 330 major novelists and poets from Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, both as exemplars of the literature of all the countries of Spanish America and as personally important literary creators. Flores knew most of the authors and was able to obtain from many extraordinary autobiographical passages that often form a part of the author's sketch. Most of the sketches were written in Spanish and translated into English. Critical insights and assessments of translations (a feature of inestimable value and interest) accompany biographies and autobiographies. All material was edited by Flores, who also prepared most of the excellent and extensive bibliographies. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism by : John Carlos Rowe
Download or read book Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism written by John Carlos Rowe and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Carlos Rowe, considered one of the most eminent and progressive critics of American literature, has in recent years become instrumental in shaping the path of American studies. His latest book examines literary responses to U.S. imperialism from the late eighteenth century to the 1940s. Interpreting texts by Charles Brockden Brown, Poe, Melville, John Rollin Ridge, Twain, Henry Adams, Stephen Crane, W. E. B Du Bois, John Neihardt, Nick Black Elk, and Zora Neale Hurston, Rowe argues that U.S. literature has a long tradition of responding critically or contributing to our imperialist ventures. Following in the critical footsteps of Richard Slotkin and Edward Said, Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism is particularly innovative in taking account of the public and cultural response to imperialism. In this sense it could not be more relevant to what is happening in the scholarship, and should be vital reading for scholars and students of American literature and culture.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In three volumes of expert, innovative scholarship, Literary Cultures of Latin America offers a multidisciplinary reference on one of the most distinctive literary cultures in the world. In topically arranged articles written by a team of international scholars, Literary Cultures of Latin America explores the shifting problems that have arisen across national borders, geographic regions, time periods, linguistic systems, and cultural traditions in literary history. Bucking the tradition of focusing almost exclusively on the great canons of literature, this unique reference work casts its net wider, exploring pop culture, sermons, scientific essays, and more. While collaborators are careful to note that these volumes offer only a snapshot of the diverse body of Latin American literature, Literary Cultures of Latin America highlights unique cultural perspectives that have never before received academic attention. Comprised of signed articles each with complete bibliographies, this unique reference also takes into account relevant political, anthropological, economic, geographic, historical, demographic, and sociological research in order to understand the full context of each community's literature.
