La autora unas veces hace referencia a un estado de la situación, otras veces a un proceso donde intervienen los actores sociales y otras a un resultado, a un efecto. La segregación, como tradicionalmente señalan los estudios norteamericanos, puede ser definida como la concentración de un subgrupo de la población que comparte una misma característica (raza, etnia, nivel de pobreza, religión, etcétera) en ciertas porciones del espacio. De esa manera, la segregación hace referencia a la constitución de zonas relativamente homogéneas (al nivel de una o diversas características) en el espacio urbano, pero que al mismo tiempo resultan ser diferentes de otras zonas. Existe un segundo sentido, el de la segregación vista como un proceso en el cual los actores desarrollan estrategias con el fin de apartar a los miembros de otras categorías sociales.

In the short term at least, the causal relations go from economy to demography. In the long term, if economic growth is linked with demographic growth as some economists hypothesise, this would also be fundamental, not only in the sense of growth itself but also with regard to how this might be distributed.
