Book Synopsis Palaces of Pleasure by : Lee Jackson
Download or read book Palaces of Pleasure written by Lee Jackson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An energetic and exhilarating account of the Victorian entertainment industry, its extraordinary success and enduring impact The Victorians invented mass entertainment. As the nineteenth century’s growing industrialized class acquired the funds and the free time to pursue leisure activities, their every whim was satisfied by entrepreneurs building new venues for popular amusement. Contrary to their reputation as dour, buttoned-up prudes, the Victorians reveled in these newly created ‘palaces of pleasure’. In this vivid, captivating book, Lee Jackson charts the rise of well-known institutions such as gin palaces, music halls, seaside resorts and football clubs, as well as the more peculiar attractions of the pleasure garden and international exposition, ranging from parachuting monkeys and human zoos to theme park thrill rides. He explores how vibrant mass entertainment came to dominate leisure time and how the attempts of religious groups and secular improvers to curb ‘immorality’ in the pub, variety theater and dance hall faltered in the face of commercial success. The Victorians’ unbounded love of leisure created a nationally significant and influential economic force: the modern entertainment industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amusement parks which first appeared in England at the turn of the twentieth century represent a startlingly novel and complex phenomenon, combining fantasy architecture, new technology, ersatz danger, spectacle and consumption in a new mass experience. Though drawing on a diverse range of existing leisure practices, the particular entertainment formula they offered marked a radical departure in terms of visual, experiential and cultural meanings. The huge, socially mixed crowds that flocked to the new parks did so purely in the pursuit of pleasure, which the amusement parks commodified in exhilarating new guises. Between 1906 and 1939, nearly 40 major amusement parks operated across Britain. By the outbreak of the Second World War, millions of people visited these sites each year. The amusement park had become a defining element in the architectural psychological pleasurescape of Britain. This book considers the relationship between popular modernity, pleasure and the amusement park landscape in Britain from 1900-1939. It argues that the amusement parks were understood as a new and distinct expression of modern times which redefined the concept of public pleasure for mass audiences. Focusing on three sites - Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Dreamland in Margate and Southend's Kursaal - the book contextualises their development with references to the wider amusement park world. The meanings of these sites are explored through a detailed examination of the spatial and architectural form taken by rides and other buildings. The rollercoaster - a defining symbol of the amusement park - is given particular focus, as is the extent to which discourses of class, gender and national identity were expressed through the design of these parks.

Book excerpt: For many, the word 'pleasure' conjures associations with hedonism, indulgence, and escape from the life of the mind. However little we talk about it, though, pleasure also plays an integral role in cognitive life, in both our sensory perception of the world and our intellectual understanding. This previously important but now neglected philosophical understanding of pleasure is the focus of the essays in this volume, which challenges received views that pleasure is principally motivating of action, unanalyzable, and caused, rather than responsive to reason. Like other books in the Oxford Philosophical Concepts series, it traces the development of the focal idea from ancient times through the 20th century. The essays highlight points of departure for new lines of inquiry rather than attempting to provide a full picture of how the idea of pleasure has been explored in philosophy. The volume begins by showing how Plato, Aristotle, early Islamic philosophers, and philosophers in the Medieval Latin tradition, such as Aquinas, honed in on the challenge of unifying the variety of pleasures so that they fall under one concept. In the early modern period, philosophers shifted from understanding the logic of pleasure to treating pleasure as a mental state. As the studies of Malebranche, Berkeley and Kant show, the central problem becomes understanding the relation of pleasure to other sensory experiences, and the role of pleasure in human cognition and knowledge. Short interdisciplinary reflections interspersed between essays focus on art of 16th and 17th century textbooks and the difficult music of composers like Bach, which demonstrate translation of these concerns to cultural production in the period. As the essay on Mill shows, the 19th century development of scientific psychology narrowed the definition of pleasure, and so its philosophical focus. Contemporary accounts of pleasure, however, in both philosophy and psychology, are now recognizing the limitations of this narrow focus, and are once again recognizing the complexity of pleasure and its role in human life.

Book Synopsis Sport and the Social Significance of Pleasure by : Richard Pringle
Download or read book Sport and the Social Significance of Pleasure written by Richard Pringle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative text's critical examination foregrounds the prime reason why so many people participate in or watch sport – pleasure. Although there has been a "turn" to emotions and affect within academia over the last two decades, it has been somewhat remiss that pleasure, as an integral aspect of human life, has not received greater attention from sociologists of sport, exercise and physical education. This book addresses this issue via an unabashed examination of sport and the moving body via a "pleasure lens." It provides new insights about the production of various identities, power relations and social issues, and the dialectical links between the socio-cultural and the body. Taking a wide-sweeping view of pleasure - dignified and debauched, distinguished and mundane – it examines topics as diverse as aging, health, fandom, running, extreme sports, biopolitics, consumerism, feminism, sex and sexuality. In drawing from diverse theoretical approaches and original empirical research, the text reveals the social and political significance of pleasure and provides a more rounded, dynamic and sensual account of sport.

Book excerpt: The Pursuit of Pleasure presents the figures of the rambler and the cyprian, the Eighteenth Century precursors to the Parisian flGneur and prostitute. The urban spaces traced by these figures were the clubs, sporting venues, operas, assembly rooms, streets and arcades of central London.Drawing on critical theory, geography and philosophy, The Pursuit of Pleasure extends and critiques the discipline of architectural history from a feminist perspective. The gendering of public space is considered to be a complex and shifting series of moves and looks between men and women, constructed and represented through spatial and social relations of consumption, display and exchange.Illustrated with contemporary prints and drawings, The Pursuit of Pleasure is an extraordinarily rich analysis of the gendered issues of public space at the birth of the modern metropolis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to a world where passionate love intertwines modern sexual practices with the wisdom of the ancient east, and desire is ignited by the timeless teachings of the Kama Sutra, Kabazza, Kunyaza, Imsak, The Perfumed Garden, Ananga Ranga, The Pillow Book, Tantra and Tao. This new artful practice “Alveno Plaisir: Arrival of the Ultimate Pleasure," invites you on an intimate journey of sensual exploration, where every caress, every glance, and every touch resonates with profound connection and ecstasy. In the embrace of this modern practice, you and your partner will unlock the secrets to a fulfilling and rapturous intimate life, where pleasure becomes an art and love becomes a moment of forever. The majority of men and women don't know and understand what the female body is capable of. I don't blame them since even experts in the field don't know and understand it. This art and guide will change your world, whether you are a male or female, read and discover ultimate pleasure with this new art, and I promise, you won’t regret it. I've striven for thoroughness without unnecessary embellishments, maintaining a tone reminiscent of the ancient eastern sexual manuals that serve as the foundation for this content. Any perceived stiffness or antiquated feel in my expression is deliberate, aligning with the traditional style inherent in these materials, however, at times a sense of my modern approach. It is a blending of the new and old, thus creating something more impactful for these times. As you turn the pages, the secrets of the ages will unfurl before you, revealing the ancient practices to harmonize an intimate relationship – emotionally, mentally, and physically. Sex in the ancient East was seen as a sacred ritual between husband and wife, for long-term relationships and to satisfy women. Selfish desire is against their practices. Men prioritize female pleasure and women worship the penis. This is the foundation of what Alveno Plaisir teaches, and it is not merely a new practice to physical pleasure; it is a spiritual dance of love, respect, and profound connection. It celebrates the intertwining of bodies and souls, the exploration of touch, and desire. Here, love (heart) becomes a sacred ritual, and pleasure becomes an awakening of the senses (mind) through stimulation of the nerves on the erogenous zones (body). This book is a journey into the depths of intimate discovery, where we explore the unique sensations and experiences that define distinct forms of orgasm. I aim to provide knowledge and insight, empowering individuals to embrace and celebrate the diversity of female pleasure. Female orgasm, in all its manifestations, is a topic of profound importance because it touches upon the core of human relationships, self-discovery, and well-being. Understanding and embracing the full spectrum of female pleasure not only enhances physical intimacy but also fosters emotional connections and self-confidence. It can lead to healthier, more fulfilling relationships and greater personal satisfaction. However, the topic of female ejaculate, squirting, and gushing orgasms has historically been shrouded in mystery and misconceptions. Many cultures and societies have held various beliefs and attitudes towards female sexuality, leading to a wide array of cultural perceptions and taboos. The history of these topics is a fascinating journey that reveals the influence of cultural, societal, and religious norms on sexual expression. Throughout history, there have been societies that revered female pleasure and celebrated the mysteries of the female orgasm. In contrast, others have stifled discussions, imposed shame, and even denied the existence of certain forms of female orgasm. By examining these historical perspectives and cultural perceptions, we gain insights into the evolution of our understanding of female pleasure. In this modern age, where discussions around sexuality have become more open and inclusive, it is essential to break the shackles of old stigmas and misconceptions. This book is dedicated to contributing to this progressive dialogue, dispelling myths, and celebrating the unique experiences that women can have in their sexual lives. We get one chance to experience this life so why not make it the best emotional, mental, and sexual experience we can ever have? Think about your best encounter and imagine, what if there was better? Book Synopsis Women, Pleasure and the Gambling Experience by : Emma Casey
Download or read book Women, Pleasure and the Gambling Experience written by Emma Casey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad range of historical and sociological literature, this book traces the everyday gambling experiences of a diverse group of women. It provides fascinating and original insights into the pleasures afforded to women through their gambling participation and draws on a variety of feminist literature to understand women's motivations and experience of play, and to examine the ways in which women negotiate their right to gamble without reprimand. Since gambling tends to be framed within moral discourses of danger and excess, this book offers a defence of women's decisions to gamble against an often hostile backdrop. It rewrites claims that gambling is 'meaningless' and reckless spending, by pointing instead to the highly complex strategies that women who gamble employ. Importantly, it adds to contemporary feminist debates about women's leisure by showing how women seize control of their lives in order to carve out a time and space for the pursuit of pleasure.
