Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pleasure and Problem in South Africa The political articles stand, of course, on a different footing. Here the bias of the writer is certain to show itself, and it is not claimed for the political views herein expressed that they are free from partiality. The man who, after the last ten or fifteen years of passionate controversy, carries with him to South Afi'ica a perfectly open mind is a ram avis indeed. What is essential is that there should be no intrusion on the part of the visitor from Home into those departments of colonial affairs that do not concern him. It is trusted that in the whole of the following narrative nothing has been said that can by any possibility wound the just susceptibilities of our fellow-subjects, whether British or Dutch, in South Africa. Where a controversial attitude is assumed it will be found that the writer's opinion is backed by South African opinion of the highest respectability. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pleasure and Problem in South Africa At the present juncture South Africa presents an exceptionally attractive field for the observations of the tourist. There is always the charm of sunshine such as we never enjoy in Northwestern Europe, and there is, since the War, the poignant interest of recent history. The journey is worth making if only for the purpose of studying South African political and social problems on the spot. A number of these problems have their counterparts in other portions of the Empire, and are important enough in themselves to justify the earnest attention of the student of Imperial politics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Man's Place in South Africa We of to-day are rightly proud of our freedom from the sour superstitions and religious animosities of the past, but these hindrances to progress and general happiness were only dispelled by the light of scientific thought and clear reasoning. Let us then bring to bear that same blessed light upon our present enquiry into the reasons, real or fancied, for those prejudices of race and colour which we still retain, for it is only by removing the misconceptions and false notions that obscure our view that we can come to a clear understanding of the many complex issues that make up the great Native problem of Africa. Book excerpt: Putting the sex back in Pleasure, here is the first new English translation since the Victorian era of the great Italian masterpiece of sensuality and seduction Like Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, Andrea Sperelli lives his life as a work of art, seeking beauty and flouting the rules of morality and social interaction along the way. In his aristocratic circles in Rome, he is a serial seducer. But there are two women who command his special regard: the beautiful young widow Elena, and the pure, virgin-like Maria. In Andrea’s pursuit of the exalted heights of extreme pleasure, he plays them against each other, spinning a sadistic web of lust and deceit. This new translation of D’Annunzio’s masterpiece, the first in more than one hundred years, restores what was considered too offensive to be included in the 1898 translation—some of the very scenes that are key to the novel’s status as a landmark of literary decadence. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maria W. Stewart and the Roots of Black Political Thought tells a crucial, almost-forgotten story of African Americans of early nineteenth-century America. In 1833, Maria W. Stewart (1803–1879) told a gathering at the African Masonic Hall on Boston’s Beacon Hill: “African rights and liberty is a subject that ought to fire the breast of every free man of color in these United States.” She exhorted her audience to embrace the idea that the founding principles of the nation must extend to people of color. Otherwise, those truths are merely the hypocritical expression of an ungodly white power, a travesty of original democratic ideals. Like her mentor, David Walker, Stewart illustrated the practical inconsistencies of classical liberalism as enacted in the US and delivered a call to action for ending racism and addressing gender discrimination. Between 1831 and 1833, Stewart’s intellectual productions, as she called them, ranged across topics from true emancipation for African Americans, the Black convention movement, the hypocrisy of white Christianity, Black liberation theology, and gender inequity. Along with Walker’s Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World, her body of work constitutes a significant foundation for a moral and political theory that is finding new resonance today—insurrectionist ethics. In this work of recovery, author Kristin Waters examines the roots of Black political activism in the petition movement; Prince Hall and the creation of the first Black masonic lodges; the Black Baptist movement spearheaded by the brothers Thomas, Benjamin, and Nathaniel Paul; writings; sermons; and the practices of festival days, through the story of this remarkable but largely unheralded woman and pioneering public intellectual.
