Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, young Chicago architect Phil Ashley and his live-in girlfriend, TV newscaster Alison Knight, find themselves locked in an unlikely love triangle with a neighboring temptress whose undraped window appearances trigger untimely, unfinished spiritual and emotional issues left over from the psychedelic sixties. When Phil is offered an unusual architectural project set in the countercultural West Coast waterfront community of Samsara, the pair agree to temporarily part ways in hopes that a break will do them good. Little did they suspect that their romantic recess would soon turn chaotic when Samsara’s pirate broadcast featuring aqua goddess Pearl explodes into international headlines. Could the untimely uproar help reunite the troubled couple… or bring a dramatic end to their relationship?

Book excerpt: As the years have gone by I have become increasingly aware that having good health is far more important than having money or owning nice things. Everything else pales into obscurity when compared with our health. In this book I encourage men and women of all ages to find sports and physical activities they truly enjoy beginning as early in life as possible. This book is about being the best you can be for as long as you can be. Not only will you find it very enjoyable if you do, you will reap huge health benefits as well. We are capable of much more than most people realize. I speak from the personal experience of still being able to compete with much younger athletes in a challenging game at an age most people would likely regard me as being too old. Many of the players I play with have made the comment, I dont know how you do it. In this book I have tried to explain what I have done to do it. I do not feel much different mentally now than I did as a young man and I am still considered to be a reasonably capable player. My health is excellent. My energy level is high. I do not take any prescription medicines. I do not experience many aches and pains. I believe these positive outcomes have been greatly influenced by the effort I have put in. It doesnt just happen you have to make it happen. This is a book about real life in the real world. I have included several real life experiences to illustrate the impact that athletics and physical conditioning have had on mine and my wifes health. They include vignettes on job stress, open heart surgery, depression, and allergic reactions to chemicals. Many of you may experience these or other types of serious challenges at some point in your lives. I wish all of you the very best and hope that you will make a real effort to Be all you can be. You can help forge your own destiny.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Amazon.ca First Novel Award and a finalist for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the Governor General’s Literary Award, The Break is a stunning and heartbreaking debut novel about a multigenerational Métis–Anishnaabe family dealing with the fallout of a shocking crime in Winnipeg’s North End. When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break — a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house — she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime. In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim — police, family, and friends — tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night. Lou, a social worker, grapples with the departure of her live-in boyfriend. Cheryl, an artist, mourns the premature death of her sister Rain. Paulina, a single mother, struggles to trust her new partner. Phoenix, a homeless teenager, is released from a youth detention centre. Officer Scott, a Métis policeman, feels caught between two worlds as he patrols the city. Through their various perspectives a larger, more comprehensive story about lives of the residents in Winnipeg’s North End is exposed. A powerful intergenerational family saga, The Break showcases Vermette’s abundant writing talent and positions her as an exciting new voice in Canadian literature.

Book excerpt: In an era of increasingly patient-centered healthcare, understanding how health and illness play out in social context is vital. This volume opens a unique window on the role of play in health and wellbeing in widely varied contexts, from the work of Patch Adams as a hospital clown, to an Australian facility for dementia treatment, to a New Zealand preschool after an earthquake, to a housing complex where Irish children play near home. Across these and other featured studies, play is shown to be shaman-like in its transformative dynamics, marshaling symbolic resources to re-align how patients construe and experience illness. Even when illness is not an issue, play promotes wellbeing by its power to reimagine, invigorate, enliven and renew through sensory engagement, physical activity, and symbolism. Play levels social barriers and increases flexible response, facilitating both shared social support and creative reassessment. This book challenges assumptions that play is inefficient and unproductive, with highly relevant evidence that playful processes actually work hard to dislodge unproductive approaches and thereby aid resilience. Solid research evidence in this book charts the course and opens the agenda for taking play seriously, for the sake of health. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Play.
