Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A white rock ’n’ roll guitarist on stage with the Godfather of Soul In this unvarnished account of toiling under one of popular music’s most notorious bosses, Damon Wood details his six years spent playing guitar for James Brown’s Soul Generals. In a memoir certain to fascinate Mr. Dynamite’s millions of fans, as well as musicians and industry insiders, Wood recalls how a chance encounter with James Brown led him to embrace soul and funk music under the tutelage of its greatest progenitor. Numerous interviews with bandmates provide multiple perspectives on James Brown’s complex character, his leadership of his band, the nature of soul and funk, and insights and sometimes harsh lessons learned along the way. This is a sideman’s story of the gritty reality of working close to the spotlight but rarely in it. Damon Wood describes life on the road — often on James Brown’s infamous tour bus — with one guitar, a change of clothes, and two dozen comrades-in-arms as they brought the funk to clubs, theaters, and the biggest music festivals on earth. Working for James Brown could be fear-inducing, inspiring, exhilarating, and exasperating — all in the space of a single performance.

Better yet, visit any public place that plays popular music from the last 50 years or so as the soundtrack to your Saturday afternoon grocery-shopping, clothes-buying or indie record store-scouting experience and you?ll find that no matter where you go, there's an ever-enduring presence that since the late 1960s has been a mainstay in the world of pop culture and popular music: a former blues band turned rock ?n? roll atom bomb called Fleetwood Mac. Though much of the band's popularity stems from their work in the late seventies and eighties, from an era when gas was 50 cents a gallon and singers were their own songwriters, there's a reason why the band has been able to maintain their status as rock ?n? roll royalty even more than 50 years after making their debut as a London-based blues group. His name is Lindsey Buckingham.

Book excerpt: Jam in the Band is the story of the rise and fall of the all-female junk-rock band Pitch Girl. The story focuses on the tension between the members of the band and the commitment they are willing to make to be successful. Lead singer Bianca is willing to give up everything to make her dream into a reality, while her band mates Tiara and Corbin feel a much stronger pull towards the comforts of home and intimacy. These tensions will start to simmer when Tiara is confronted with her first real chance at a romantic relationship since Pitch Girl became famous. All of this comes to head when the band embarks on an ill-fated overseas tour. These three young women will then have to try to figure out who they are and what they want as they transition to the next phase of their lives. Told through a montage of drama, interviews, hand held camera footage, diary pages, news reports, music videos, web chats, and punk rock flyers; Jam in the Band is the story of the lives creative people stumble through in their twenties as they try to live out their hopes and dreams. Robin Enrico is Adjunct Professor of Music and Art at CUNY BMCC. He started making comics at twenty-three. Robin created Jam in the Band in installments over seven years. The text and art were then heavily revised for a further two years.

Fifteen hundred passengers and crew lost their lives. As the order to abandon ship was given, the orchestra took their instruments on deck and continued to play. They were still playing when the ship went down. The violinist, 21 year-old Jock Hume, knew that his fiancée, Mary, was expecting their first child, the author's mother. One hundred years later, Christopher Ward reveals a dramatic story of love, loss and betrayal, and the catastrophic impact of Jock's death on two very different Scottish families. He paints a vivid portrait of an age in which class determined the way you lived - and died. An outstanding piece of historical detective work, AND THE BAND PLAYED ON is also a moving account of how the author's quest to learn more about his grandfather revealed the shocking truth about a family he thought he knew, a truth that had been hidden for nearly a hundred years.

Book excerpt: Music is a heavenly gift. It is one of the only gifts that transcends the barriers of language and creed. The inspirational and charismatic music of the Bahama Brass Band stirs a range of emotions from overwhelming peace and contentment to sheer bliss. The harmonic arrangements combined in the music of the Bahama Brass Band are the culmination of many influences; the most important being our heritage and faith in Almighty God. The world famous Bahama Brass Band was organized in 1925 by four ministers of the Gospel namely; Bishop Hermis Ferguson, Bishop Alvin S. Moss, Bishop James R. Cooper, and Pastor Frank Cunningham. Today, with the combination of its Nassau and Grand Bahama segments, the membership exceeds 100. This band plays an important role in the ministry of the Church of God of Prophecy as evidenced by its performances at local and state conventions as well as the bi-annual worldwide General Assemblies. The late Bishop Stanley R. Ferguson, first colonial overseer prophesied that the day would come when this band would play before Kings and the Rulers of the earth. On July 10th, 1973 the prophecy was fulfilled during The Bahamas' Independence Celebrations. In attendance to witness the ministry of this band were; Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, representative for his mother Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Sir Roland Symonette, former premier of The Bahamas, Rt. Hon. Sir Lynden Pindling, prime minister of The Bahamas, prime ministers and government representatives of St. Lucia, Jamaica, Bermuda, St. Kitts, Grenada and thirty (30) Latin American countries.
