In the wake of the global financial crisis and harsh austerity policies, 15-M movement activists occupied public squares across the country, mobilized millions of Spanish citizens, gave rise to new hybrid parties such as Podemos, and inspired pro-democracy movements around the world. Based on access to key participants in the 15-M movement and Podemos and extensive participant observation, the book tells the story of this remarkable movement, its emergence, evolution, and impact. In so doing, it challenges some of the core arguments in social movement scholarship about the factors likely to lead to movement success. Instead the book argues that movements organized around autonomous network logics can build and sustain strong movements in the absence of formal organizations, strong professionalized leadership, and the ability to attract external resources. The key to understanding its power lies in the shared political culture and collective identity that emerged following the occupation of Spain's central squares. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen the EU grappling with a major struggle between the securitization of its external borders and demand for exploitable and disposable cheap workforce in various sectors. As a result, the EU has multiplied its borders by pushing them both outwards and inwards, and the distinction between migrants' status as regular and irregular, legal and illegal, citizen and non-citizen, has been continuously portrayed as black and white. This produces and sustains an analytical, political and practical divide that often obscures commonalities in workers' dispossession and is an obstacle to unified struggles to secure workers' rights. This volume moves beyond a perspective of migrants' exclusion and inclusion as solely a product of migration processes. It contextualizes migration in the larger transformations of the local, national and transnational labour markets and relations that point to the ongoing precarization of working lives. These processes of inclusion are methodologically approached through exclusion at macro, micro and meso levels. This positions the ethnographically documented experiences of immigrant labourers in the challenges of contemporary labour and migratory regimes, and traces new forms of collective response and contestation emerging in these reconfiguring contexts.

Spanning over 3.5 years from 2019 to 2023, it captured and supported the efforts of the Ministry of Space collective, AKS Gemeinwohl, Häuser Bewegen GIMA eG., Kollektiv Raumstation, and Observatori DESC to change the political paradigms shaping the contemporary housing emergency in the three cities. Coordinated by K LAB (TU Berlin) and supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the CMMM team employed various formats of critical mapping to display the legislations, policies, events, hierarchies, as well as the main actors and factors that are shaping the housing crisis. Next to selected examples of how critical mapping has been applied by peers and artists in the three cities, this book scripts the process through which our team created three interactive maps “How (un)affordable is housing in Belgrade?”, “Who buys Berlin?”, and “Stop Evictions!” for Barcelona, which can be explored on the project’s website: cmmm.eu. CMMM‘s outputs intend to support existing and future municipalist activists and collectives pushing to create policy alternatives that integrate the “housing as a right” principle. We hope that our work inspires activists and engaged professionals to employ critical mapping in their endeavors to inform and nudge public opinion, towards advancing demands for justice in the urban and beyond. More than a social movement, 15M became a mode of being with transformative, democratizing potential. In Democracy Here and Now, Pablo Ouziel offers a grounded analysis of 15M. At the time of the movement and during the ensuing encampments, Ouziel travelled extensively, speaking to participants, and keeping an ongoing record of his conversations. Presenting an original participatory mode of research, the book reveals six types of intersubjective, "joining hands" relationships that 15M has brought into being and works to carry on in creative ways. The book shows how the movement’s way of being and temporality persists in Spain following the square occupations, while 15M citizens continue to learn and move forward in less perceptible ways.
