Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utilization of plastic ablative-insulative materials in re-entry and propulsion environments and the factors governing their performance are briefly described. The pertinent method "response characteristics" are separated into three major categories: thermal, chemical and physical-mechanical. Laboratory procedures fo obtaining materials behavior information in each of these categories are described. They include techniques for determining surface temperature and emissivity in hot gas streams; molecular weight and chemical identity of gaseous pyrolysis products; weight fractions of gaseous and residual solids from pyrolyzed plastics; heat of decomposition of plastics; apparent thermal diffusivity and thermal insulating characteristics; mechanical properties and cell structures and other physical characteristics of residual chars from pyrolized plastics. Selective emphasis of information obtained from laboratory studies for use in predicting materials performance in re-entry and propulsion environments is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of extensive efforts, material weathering testing still requires improvement. This book presents findings and opinions of experts in material degradation testing. The aim is to improve testing methods and procedures. Materials are presented to show that photochemical degradation rate depends on a combination of environmental factors such as UV radiation, temperature, humidity, rain, stress, and concentration of reactive pollutants. The potential effect of each parameter of degradation on data gathered is discussed based on known results from a long experience in testing. This book contains data obtained in laboratories of the largest manufacturers of UV stabilizers and chemical companies that manufacture durable materials. The book gives details of testing procedures and choice of parameters of exposure which are crucial for obtaining laboratory results correlating with environmental performance of materials. In addition to exposure conditions, the book contains many suggestions on sample preparation and post-exposure testing. The effective use of these methods shortens testing time of materials and determines acceleration rate of testing. The book also gives examples of complete, well-designed weathering experiments which may be used as patterns for selection of parameters and techniques for new studies. The areas of research that still require more attention in future studies are clearly indicated.

This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plastics currently form one of the most important components of the medical industry. Medical device designers and engineers increasingly prefer plastics to conventional packaging materials such as metals owing to superior flexibility offered by plastics in fabrication process. Advancements in sterilization techniques shift towards disposable devices, development of enhanced plastic materials, and technological innovations are factors driving the overall market growth and expansion. The development of novel materials such as biocompatible polymers for use in medical implants will furthermore provide the required impetus for the global medical plastics market. Every day, plastics are involved in critical surgeries, life saving efforts, and routine medical procedures. Plastic materials can be sterilized hundreds of times without degradation. Lightweight plastics are used to form replacement joints, non surgical supports, and therapy equipment. Clear plastics provide visibility for transfusions, surgeries, and diagnostic equipment of all kinds and plastics can be machined, molded, or formed into almost any shape imaginable. The use of plastics in health care field encompasses several distinct markets. Plastic is used on a large scale as medical devices like disposable syringes, optical and dental products, heart valves, contact lenses and many more medical products. This way plastic has very importance in making medical devices. The medical plastics industry is set to expand rapidly over the next decade taking up increasing proportions of GDP, as countries provide healthcare to an ageing population, access to medicine expands in developing regions and new technology is developed. This book basically deals with significance of packaging for pharmaceuticals & medical industry, tablets & capsules liquids, creams and ointments, OPVC, OPP and oriented and non oriented pet containers, blister trays for ampoules, cartridge tubes etc., shrink packaging and stretch wrapping, conducting health based risk assessments of medical materials, performance properties of metallocene polyethylene, EVA, and flexible PVC films, polyurethane thin film welding for medical device applications, polyurethane film as an alternative to PVC and latex, opportunities for PVC replacement in medical solution containers, thermoplastic silicone urethane copolymers : a new class of biomedical elastomers, selecting materials for medical products : from PVC to metallocene polyolefins, injection molding engineering plastics, assessing the performance and suitability of parylene coating etc. The present book contains the important information of plastics in medical field and their uses in various ways. This is very useful book for entrepreneurs, researchers, technocrats and technical institutions. Book excerpt: After price and delivery time, the most frequently asked question about a product is 'How long will it last?' Lifetime expectancy is often many years, the service conditions may be complex, and there is a scarcity of definitive data on durability. The situation is complicated by the fact that there are a vast number of degradation agents, service conditions, properties of importance and different plastics. There are many inherent difficulties in designing durability tests. In many cases, the time scale involved is such that accelerated test conditions are essential. Whilst large amounts of durability data are generated by accelerated methods, much of it is only useful for quality control purposes and relatively little has been validated as being realistically capable of representing service. Most assessments of the lifetime of plastics are made by considering some measure of performance, such as impact strength, and specifying some lower limit for the property, which is taken as the end point. Lifetime is not necessarily measured in time. For example, for some products it will be thought of as the number of cycles of use. The object of this publication is to provide practical guidance on assessing the useful service life of plastics. It describes test procedures and extrapolation techniques together with the inherent limitations and problems. The Guide aims to make available the wealth of information that can be applied to help maximise the effectiveness of a durability-testing programme. This guide seeks to be comprehensive but concentrates on the most common environmental effects causing degradation. The test procedures used are outlined and the relevant textbooks and international standards are well referenced. Examples of lifetime testing studies are cited. The Practical Guide will be useful for anyone responsible for designing, manufacturing or testing plastic components. It will also be of benefit to suppliers and users of end products, as assessment of useful lifetime is critical to the economics and safety aspects of any component. Key features Test methods outlined Accelerated testing discussed Prediction methods described Standards cited Key sources of information listed

This book was released on 2007-11-05 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most plastics and polymers used for consumer goods and technical applications contain numerous additives, many of which are potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. The Handbook for the Chemical Analysis of Plastic and Polymer Additives provides a detailed reference for the analysis of additives that are most widely used in plastics and polymers. The handbook offers a unique combination of comprehensive chromatograms, mass spectral data, and analytical data in addition to environmental perspectives and regulations issued by the FDA, USEPA, EU agencies, and other groups. Unlike other resources that focus on the selection of performance-enhancing additives, this book provides the information and techniques needed to extract, identify, and quantify additives in finished goods using common and readily available laboratory techniques. This makes it an ideal reference for monitoring plastics for regulatory or internal compliance applications as well as for using analysis to troubleshoot, develop, or improve upon application-specific compounding practices and processes. Encouraging the development of protocols for analyzing plastics and polymers, this handbook presents a clear guide to viable isolation techniques and analysis methods for accurately assessing plastic and polymer mixtures as well as an up-to-date review of the most widely used and representative additives and their known toxicological impact.
