Book excerpt: Electron density and temperature profiles have been measured in a large-facility beam-plasma-discharge(V sub B = 1.3 KeV, I sub B = 63 ma) at low pressure (P = 2-4(10 to the -6th power)Torr) and low magnetic fields (B = 1.2 G). The results follow an exponential behavior and are found to be in good agreement with a simple diffusion model. The favorable comparison between theory and experiment yields the first estimate of cross-field electron diffusion (perpendicular diffusion coefficient(nom) = 2.2 million sq cm/sec) under conditions intended to simulate Spacelab-borne beam-plasma investigations. This value for perpendicular diffusion coefficient is orders of magnitude larger than would be expected for a cross-field collisional diffusion process, a result which is identified with the turbulent state of collective beam-plasma interactions.

Book excerpt: These proceedings are based upon the invited review papers and the research notes presented at the NATO Advanced Research Institute on "Artificial Particle Beams in Space Plasma Studies" held at Geilo, Norway April 21-26, 1981. In the last decade a number of research groups have employed artificial particle beams both from sounding rockets and satellites in order to study various ionospheric and magnetospheric phenomena. However, the artificial particle beams used in this manner have given rise to a number of puzzling effects. Thus, instead of being just a probe for studying the ambient magnetosphere, the artificial particle beams have presented a rich variety of plasma physics problems, in parti~ular various discharge phenomena, which in themselves are worthy of a careful study. The experimental studies in space using artificial particle beams have in turn given rise to both theore tical and laboratory studies. In the laboratory experi ments special attention has been paid to the problem of creating spacelike conditions in the vacuum chamber. The theoretical. work has addressed the question of beam plasma-neutral interaction with emphasis on the wave generation and the modified energy distributions of the charged particles. Numerical simulations have been used extensively. With the advent of the Space Shuttle in which several artificial particle beam experiments are planned for the 1980's, there is a growing interest in such experiments. Furthermore, there is a need for coordinating these studies, both in space and in the laboratory.

This book serves as a general multidisciplinary guide and introduction for a more effective use of the large amount of now available data from the Earth's atmosphere. It also shows the problems of the use of large amounts of time series data - for basic science as well as for environmental monitoring - and the related information systems. The book is aimed for scientists and students interested in the Earth's atmosphere which is vital for the understanding of environmental changes in the global system Earth.

Book excerpt: Laboratory simulations of space plasma phenomena provide an important link in establishing broader perspectives of various plasma processes, in helping to understand spatially or temporally limited rocket and satellite observations, and in planning future spaceborne experiments. One such area has been the artificial injection of energetic electron beams in space which has transitioned from an early and somewhat confused set of rocket data through a relatively intensive program of laboratory based space simulations, to an ambitious program which exploits the Shuttle as a readily accessible laboratory in space. While accumulated information points to a considerably improved understanding of beam plasma parameters which define single particle behavior on the one hand and collective beam plasma properties on the other, the extrapolation of these results to Shuttle borne applications is met with a number of constraints. Focusing on the transition from single particle behavior to the collective nonlinear interactions in the beam plasma discharge, this paper provides a comparative analysis on aspects involving Shuttle unique environmental effects. Emphasis is placed on Shuttle potentials and associated sheaths, ambient plasma and neutral density effects including relative spacecraft motion, pulsed versus dc gun operation, and beam plasma discharge criteria in general.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is twofold: to provide an introduction for newcomers to state of the art computer simulation techniques in space plasma physics and an overview of current developments. Computer simulation has reached a stage where it can be a highly useful tool for guiding theory and for making predictions of space plasma phenomena, ranging from microscopic to global scales. The various articles are arranged, as much as possible, according to the - derlying simulation technique, starting with the technique that makes the least number of assumptions: a fully kinetic approach which solves the coupled set of Maxwell’s equations for the electromagnetic ?eld and the equations of motion for a very large number of charged particles (electrons and ions) in this ?eld. Clearly, this is also the computationally most demanding model. Therefore, even with present day high performance computers, it is the most restrictive in terms of the space and time domain and the range of particle parameters that can be covered by the simulation experiments. It still makes sense, therefore, to also use models, which due to their simp- fying assumptions, seem less realistic, although the e?ect of these assumptions on the outcome of the simulation experiments needs to be carefully assessed.

Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures presented at the International Workshop on Relation between Laboratory and Space Plasmas held at Gakushi-Kaikan (University Alumni Association) Kanda in Tokyo, Japan on 14 - 15 April, 1980. Its aim was to bring together laboratory, fusion and space plasma physicists and to highlight the communality of basic plasma phenomena, similarities and differences observed in the laboratory and in space, thus exchanging information tnd views on new ideas to link both areas. Although similar type of conferences were held in Europe and recently in the States, this is the first time we have had in Japan for such an international meeting, which may be regarded as an extended version of our national Workshop held twice at the Institute of Plasma Physics of Japan (IPPJ) in 1976 and in 1977 (IPPJ Research Report No. 286 and No. 365). The Workshop consisted of seven regular sessions and one special session with approximately ninety participants from allover the world. Thirty-six papers, invited and contributed, were presented, nine from U. S. A., three from U. S. S. R., two of each from Germany, France, India, one of each from Sweden, Canada, Belgium and fifteen from Japan. The topics covered were: (1) The Critical Velocity (2) Beam Plasma Discharges and Interactions (3) Double Layers and Shocks (4) Instabilities in the Equatorial and Auroral Electrojets (5) Turbulent and Anomalous Plasmas (6) Plasma Irregularities (7) Solar Plasma Phenomena (8) Active Experiments in Space Plasmas and Their Simulation in the Laboratory.
