Simeon Lourdel: Planting the Faith in the Furthest Africa, tells the story of a tall and imposing missionary with a heart of gold. Lourdel, a French missionary priest, became the Apostle of Uganda. In his short life, Fr. Lourdel had transformed the landscape of the entire country. The charity, the tact and prudence of the missionary were taxed to the utmost. When after years of patient toil, he had the consolation of reaping the first fruits of his conquests for Christ, behold-a cruel and sudden persecution visited the newly established Christian Community, and in an instant, he had the untold sorrow of seeing his mission swept by fire and drenched in blood.Midst this awful upheaval, the faith and the charity of the apostle waxed the stronger; at the peril of his life, the good shepherd remained close to his flock, encouraging them by day and by night, preparing them for the crown of martyrdom that was soon to be theirs. He hoped too that he would be allowed to share the sufferings of his children and to die with them in testimony for the Faith. But though repeatedly threatened with death and suffering, imprisonment twice-his cross-and could a heavier one be imagined?-was to witness the oppressing, and the slaying of his beloved neophytes. Mother F.A. Forbes tells the story of Uganda's first Apostle in a beautiful yet simple to read account that will inspire as well as uplift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Holocaust, which was first published in 1962, tells the extraordinary story of how and why a group of 22 Catholic converts to Christianity in the historical kingdom of Buganda (now part of Uganda) were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January 1887. These “Uganda Martyrs” were killed on orders of Mwanga II, the Kabaka (King) of Buganda, at a time of a three-way religious struggle for political influence at the Buganda royal court. The episode also occurred against the backdrop of the “Scramble for Africa”—the invasion, occupation, division, colonization and annexation of African territory by European powers. A fascinating read.

Book Synopsis Political Power in Pre-colonial Buganda by : Richard J. Reid
Download or read book Political Power in Pre-colonial Buganda written by Richard J. Reid and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessed with fertile and well-watered soil, East Africa's kingdom of Buganda supported a relatively dense population and became a major regional power by the mid-nineteenth century. This complex and fascinating state has also long been in need of a thorough study that cuts through the image of autocracy and military might. Political Power in Pre-Colonial Buganda explores the material basis of Ganda political power, gives us a new understanding of what Ganda power meant in real terms, and relates the story of how the kingdom used the resources at its disposal to meet the challenges that confronted it. Reid further explains how these same challenges ultimately limited Buganda's dominance of the East African great lakes region.
Book Synopsis Kingship and State by : Christopher Wrigley
Download or read book Kingship and State written by Christopher Wrigley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precolonial kingdom of Buganda, nucleus of the present Uganda state, has long attracted scholarly interest. Since written records are lacking entirely until 1862, historians have had to rely on oral traditions that were recorded from the end of the nineteenth century. These sources provide rich materials on Buganda in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but in this 1996 book Christopher Wrigley endeavours to show that the stories which appear to relate to earlier periods are largely mythology. He argues that this does not reduce their value since they are of interest in their own mythical right, revealing ancient traces of sacred kingship, and also throwing oblique light on the development of the recent state. He has written an elegant and wide-ranging study of one of Africa's most famous kingdoms.
