Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Chemical Weed Control is the first book to present an overview of plant crop protection against non-food plants using non-chemical means. Plants growing wild—particularly unwanted plants found in cultivated ground to the exclusion of the desired crop—have been treated with herbicides and chemical treatments in the past. As concern over environmental, food and consumer safety increases, research has turned to alternatives, including the use of cover crops, thermal treatments and biotechnology to reduce and eliminate unwanted plants. This book provides insight into existing and emerging alternative crop protection methods and includes lessons learned from past methodologies. As crop production resources decline while consumer concerns over safety increase, the effective control of weeds is imperative to insure the maximum possible levels of soil, sunlight and nutrients reach the crop plants. - Allows reader to identify the most appropriate solution based on their individual use or case - Provides researchers, students and growers with current concepts regarding the use of modern, environment-friendly weed control techniques - Presents methods of weed management—an important part of integrated weed management in the future - Exploits the knowledge gained from past sustainable weed management efforts

Book Synopsis Pesticide Policy and Politics in the European Union by : Emanuela Bozzini
Download or read book Pesticide Policy and Politics in the European Union written by Emanuela Bozzini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the regulation of pesticides in the European Union in order to reveal the complex, controversial, and contested nature of an assessment system proudly declared by the EU to be ‘the strictest in the world’. The current regulatory framework is based on Regulation 1107/2009, which substantially reformed the previous system. The analysis describes the new criteria and procedures for the authorization of active substances to be used in the production of pesticides, traces the lengthy policy formulation process, and identifies factors that made policy change possible. Further, the book illustrates the current controversies that characterise the implementation of Regulation 1107/2009: the ban of pesticides harmful to pollinators, the renewal of the authorization of glyphosate, and the definition of criteria for the assessment of endocrine disruption. The author provides information on policy outcomes and highlights persisting shortcomings in the enforcement of EU regulation. This book will appeal to students and scholars from a variety of disciplines, including political science, political sociology, and public policy.

Book Synopsis Ensuring Safe Food by : Institute of Medicine and National Research Council
Download or read book Ensuring Safe Food written by Institute of Medicine and National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How safe is our food supply? Each year the media report what appears to be growing concern related to illness caused by the food consumed by Americans. These food borne illnesses are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, pesticide residues, and food additives. Recent actions taken at the federal, state, and local levels in response to the increase in reported incidences of food borne illnesses point to the need to evaluate the food safety system in the United States. This book assesses the effectiveness of the current food safety system and provides recommendations on changes needed to ensure an effective science-based food safety system. Ensuring Safe Food discusses such important issues as: What are the primary hazards associated with the food supply? What gaps exist in the current system for ensuring a safe food supply? What effects do trends in food consumption have on food safety? What is the impact of food preparation and handling practices in the home, in food services, or in production operations on the risk of food borne illnesses? What organizational changes in responsibility or oversight could be made to increase the effectiveness of the food safety system in the United States? Current concerns associated with microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards in the food supply are discussed. The book also considers how changes in technology and food processing might introduce new risks. Recommendations are made on steps for developing a coordinated, unified system for food safety. The book also highlights areas that need additional study. Ensuring Safe Food will be important for policymakers, food trade professionals, food producers, food processors, food researchers, public health professionals, and consumers.

This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the guidelines is to provide guidance to governments that seek to review, update or design national pesticide legislation. It should be emphasized, however, that legislation alone cannot ensure effective pesticide management and adequate protection of the environment and public health. Governments will need to have in place the necessary institutional infrastructure for registering pesticides and enforcing legislation. Further, governments also need effective supporting policies and tools to promote sustainable pest and pesticide management. This may include promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Vector Management (IVM) through training programmes and incentive schemes, increasing availability and use of low risk products, fostering scientific research, carrying out public education campaigns and providing training for inspectors, retailers and professional users. A solid legislative framework should underpin the selected institutional framework, policies and tools. This document supersedes the Guidelines for Legislation on the Control of Pesticides of 1989.

Book Synopsis Novel Materials in the Environment by : Great Britain. Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution
Download or read book Novel Materials in the Environment written by Great Britain. Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Commission's decision to study novel materials was motivated by concern about the potential for releases to the environment arising from increasing industrial applications of metals and minerals that have not previously been widely used and, secondly, by the embodiment of nanoparticles and nanotubes in a wide range of consumer products and specialist applications in fields such as medicine and environmental remediation. Most of the evidence received focused on nanomaterials - particles, fibres and tubes on the scale of a few billionths of a metre. Chapters 2 and 3 explore the extent to which novel substances are currently being deployed, the plausible pathways by which they might enter the environment, their likely environmental destinations in use or disposal and the possible consequences of their release to those destinations. Chapter 4 considers what arrangements would be most appropriate for the governance of emerging technologies under two conditions that pose serious constraints on any regulator. First is the condition of ignorance about the possible environmental impacts in the absence of any kind of track record for the technology. Second is the condition of ubiquity - the fact that new technologies no longer develop in a context of local experimentation but emerge as globally pervasive systems - which challenges both trial-and-error learning and attempts at national regulation. Both new governance approaches and modifications to existing ones are likely to be called for. They will need to be rooted in ideas of adaptive management that require multiple perspectives on the issues. The Commission's recommendations are based on the premise that it is the functionality of the material, not particle size or mode of production, which is critical for evaluating its potential impact on the environment or human health.
Book Synopsis European SPCs Unravelled by : Oswin Ridderbusch
Download or read book European SPCs Unravelled written by Oswin Ridderbusch and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) are governed by the same substantive rules in all Member States of the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA), they are national intellectual property rights. The formal requirements and procedural practices of the national patent offices granting SPCs still differ significantly, and these divergences can have a substantial impact on the prosecution of SPCs across Europe. This one-of-a-kind handbook provides an in-depth review of SPC law in Europe, covering all substantive and procedural aspects of prosecution, enforcement and invalidation, as well as SPC-related aspects of unfair competition law. Following an overarching European chapter, which addresses general considerations and the relevant European Union law, including the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice (CJEU) and the EFTA Court, this book contains detailed national chapters for all European states that provide SPCs − i.e., the twenty-seven EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden), the EEA/EFTA states Norway and Iceland, as well as the United Kingdom, Switzerland/Liechtenstein, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and North Macedonia. The contributors to this book, all seasoned experts in the field of SPCs in their respective jurisdictions, provide clear and hands-on guidance on the most pertinent SPC-related topics of practical and strategic relevance. The considerably expanded second edition of this handbook offers a comprehensive analysis of European SPC law and practice, covering all European states with SPC systems in detailed national chapters. As such, this book provides invaluable assistance to IP practitioners in devising successful pan-European SPC filing and litigation strategies. Its practice-oriented approach, in combination with a country-by-country format where all chapters follow the same structure, makes it easy to compare the national practices and the respective national case law of the different European countries. ‘The present work fills a gap and provides, for the first time, an overview of the SPC practice in the EU Member States, which despite the intended harmonization by the respective EU legislation is still decidedly inconsistent in some areas. Altogether, this successful work, with its streamlined structure and clear language that is immediately comprehensible even to non-native speakers, functions not “only” as a source of information for European attorneys, authorities and courts. It also conveys – perhaps not at all intended by the authors – the unique diversity of this European legal regime, which for many exerts a special fascination. The present Practitioner’s Guide can be recommended without reservation and should not be missing in any specialist library.’ – Jürgen Schell, Judge at the German Federal Patent Court, on the first edition of this book.
