Download or read book Punching Out written by Paul Clemens and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elegy—angry, funny, and powerfully detailed—about the slow death of a Detroit auto plant and an American way of life. How does a country dismantle a century’s worth of its industrial heritage? To answer that question, Paul Clemens investigates the 2006 closing of one of America’s most potent symbols: a Detroit auto plant. Prior to its closing, the Budd Company stamping plant on Detroit’s East Side, built in 1919, was one of the oldest active auto plants in America’s foremost industrial city—one whose history includes the nation’s proudest moments and those of its working class. Its closing also reflects the character of the country in a new era—the sad, brutal process of picking it apart and sending it, piece by piece, to the countries that now have use for its machines. Punching Out is an up-close report, at once tender and angry, from the meanest, sharpest edge of America’s deindustrialization, and a lament for a working-class culture that once defined a prosperous America—and that is now on the verge of economic extinction.

Book Synopsis Plant Closings and Worker Displacement by : Marie Howland
Download or read book Plant Closings and Worker Displacement written by Marie Howland and published by W E Upjohn Inst for. This book was released on 1988 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1981 and 1986, the U.S. manufacturing sector lost 1.2 million jobs. There is little regional variation in rates of plant closure, nor is there any correlation between cross-regional rates of industry growth and regional rates of plant closures. However, regional variation in rates of employment gains due to start-ups can be large and is highly correlated with cross-regional differences in industry growth rates. Regions with slow growth clearly have low start-up rates and limited expansions. They do not, however, have particularly high rates of plant closings. Neither does regional economic growth seem to significantly alter the likelihood of future plant closings in a region. These data argue against industrial policy as a means of slowing the pace of worker dislocation and against concession in wages, utility bills, and taxes as a strategy for retaining local jobs. Several policy options seem viable for both national policymakers and local economic development officials, including increased federal support for takeovers of closing branch plants and subsidiaries and financial and adjustment assistance for displaced workers. (Forty tables/figures are included as well as references for each chapter.) (MN)
