This book was released on 1852 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My aim in it has been to convey a juster and less prejudiced notion than prevails at present respecting the Danish and Norwegian conquests." -Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae, An Account of the Danes and the Norwegians (1852) An Account of the Danes and the Norwegians in England, Scotland and Ireland (1852) by Jens Warsaae, was based on his research into the Scandinavian invasions of the European mainland. During the 10th century, the European mainland was invaded by Norse settlers from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who intermarried with native tribes and came to be known as "Normans." While their influence on the history of France was significant, it was even stronger in England, which the Normans conquered in the 11th century. Warsaae's book, commissioned by the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries, was his attempt to revise the impressions that the 19th century British had of the effects of the Norman conquests on England. This replica of the original text is accompanied by numerous woodcuts.

Book Synopsis A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland: From Keanlochbervie to Zetland by : Samuel Lewis
Download or read book A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland: From Keanlochbervie to Zetland written by Samuel Lewis and published by Clearfield. This book was released on 1989 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard historical genealogical gazetteer of Scotland, Lewis's "Topographical Dictionary of Scotland" contains every fact of importance that illustrates the local history of Scotland. Arranged alphabetically by place (village, parish, town, etc.), it provides an accurate description of all Scottish localities as they were at the time of publication (1851), showing, for example, where a village was located in relation to its parish or nearest towns; where a parish was located in relation to its nearest district; and the names of villages situated within it, the number of inhabitants of a given locality, the main landowners, and chief topographical features. The importance of this work is that it enables you to identify a given locality in relation to a parish and, ultimately, to identify the location of the parish records. Thus, if you know the place of origin of your ancestor--the village or town--this gazetteer will show you, in effect, which parish records to search for births, marriages, and deaths. Modern gazetteers are useless for this purpose.

Book excerpt: From 1840 Miller was based in Edinburgh, where he was the founding editor of "The Witness" newspaper. This is his account of his summer breaks from journalism, seeking out fossils around Scotland in all weather conditions. It was written for publication in "The Witness". He often adopts a personal and autobiographical strain in his writing, illuminating observations with anecdotes from his own experiences. The preface alludes to the tragic circumstances surrounding Miller's untimely death before the first publication of this work.
