Book Synopsis Forest Operations for Sustainable Forestry in the Tropics by : Dennis P. Dykstra
Download or read book Forest Operations for Sustainable Forestry in the Tropics written by Dennis P. Dykstra and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest harvesting and transportation operations are essential components of sustainable forestry. Recognition of these important factors was consistent with the theme of the XX IUFRO World Congress, "Caring for the Forest: Research in a Changing World". The Congress was held in Tampere, Finland, in August 1995. As part of the proceedings a forum was provided for discussion of new techniques for planning, implementing and controlling forest operations in ways that promote sustainable management of tropical forests. This volume is the Proceedings of the Symposium organised by IUFRO Subject Group S3.05-00, "Forest Operations in the Tropics". A range of technologies is discussed across a number of regions. A paper by Migunga discusses forest soil compaction in Tanzania, while Cordero and Howard evaluate the use of oxen for logging operations in Costa Rica. Rubini Atmawidjaja addresses the management of ecosystems in Indonesia to balance human and environmental needs. Elias studies forest harvesting damages in East Kalimantan while Aulerich reviews the application of skyline systems by one Indonesian company. Shi Mingzhang presents the forest management accomplishments of the Leizhou Forestry Bureau in Quandong province, southern China. A Mexican case study of damage evaluation in a timber yarding operation is presented by Hernández-Diáz and Delgado-Pacheco while the situation for forest operations in the Amazon Basin is reviewed by Malinovski. Cedergren et al. assess the impacts of selective logging on silvicultural values in a mixed dipterocarp forest of Sabah.
Book Synopsis Achieving the Sustainable Management of Forests by : Alastair Fraser
Download or read book Achieving the Sustainable Management of Forests written by Alastair Fraser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the reality of implementing sustainable forest management measures. Rather than simply offering theoretical descriptions, the book comprehensively details how sustainably managed forests can only be achieved through the cooperation and support of foresters, politicians, business leaders, local communities, consumers of forest-based goods and services, and the general public. The book also aims to raise public awareness of the factors involved in attaining the true sustainability of forest management, and the consequences of failing to do so, as well as the current issues facing sustainable forest management such as land ownership and land-use rights, political corruption, environmental stressors, and economic pressure. In 17 chapters, the book will appeal to academics and teachers in forestry and related areas, government practitioners, development agencies, and NGOs.

Download or read book Sustaining Forests written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank's Forests Strategy, adopted in October 2002, charts a path for the Bank's proactive engagement in the sector to help attain the goal of poverty reduction without jeopardizing the environmental values intrinsic to sustainability. This strategy replaces the Bank's 1991 Forestry Strategy, and was developed on the basis of the findings of an independent review of the 1991 strategy and a two-year consultative process with development partners and stakeholders around the world. The revised strategy, Sustaining Forests, is built on three guiding pillars: harnessing the potential of forests to reduce poverty, integrating forests into sustainable economic development, and protecting global forest values. Recognizing the key role forests play in contributing to the livelihoods of people living in extreme poverty, government and local ownership of forest policies and interventions are emphasized along with the development of appropriate institutions to ensure good governance and the mainstreaming of forests into national development planning. The strategy also aims to support ecologically, socially and economically sound management of production forests by ensuring good management practices through application of safeguard procedures and independent monitoring and certification. Implementation of the strategy will center on building and strengthening partnerships with the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other donor agencies to promote better forest conservation and management at country and global levels.
