Book excerpt: The Plannerese Dictionary contains an eclectic collection of unique and humorous words, phrases, and miscellany related to the built and natural environment. The entries range from "a la mode" a reference to an extra touch to a plan, to "zygocephalum" a measure of land based on the area of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day. Inserts include words and phrases related to airport planning, architectural styles, cell towers, houses, laws, lots, patron saints, public hearings and meetings, real estate ad phrases, rules, signage, sports analogies, street people, subdivision scale, suburbia, terms of venery, and zoning ordinance anachronisms. The dictionary began over twenty years ago as the author collected the colorful vocabulary of urban and regional planning practice, public meetings and hearings, and environmental design education. Many of these words and phrases are common to designers; others are the word-smithing of numerous contributors and the author. The dictionary has also been an integral part of the "Humor in Planning" presentations made to numerous professional organizations for over a decade. The Plannerese Dictionary contains such diverse terms as coma toes, defenestration, designosaur, dirt-eating druid, football field analogy, greige, hearings from hell, Laser Pointer Parkinson's, litter on a stick, monopalm, Planungvergnügen, PowerPoint poisoning, riot renaissance architecture, Shirley's Temple, Tarzan Ethics, ZOA, and more than 1,000 others.

Book excerpt: Planning is the branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that seeks to automate reasoning about plans, most importantly the reasoning that goes into formulating a plan to achieve a given goal in a given situation. AI planning is model-based: a planning system takes as input a description (or model) of the initial situation, the actions available to change it, and the goal condition to output a plan composed of those actions that will accomplish the goal when executed from the initial situation. The Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL) is a formal knowledge representation language designed to express planning models. Developed by the planning research community as a means of facilitating systems comparison, it has become a de-facto standard input language of many planning systems, although it is not the only modelling language for planning. Several variants of PDDL have emerged that capture planning problems of different natures and complexities, with a focus on deterministic problems. The purpose of this book is two-fold. First, we present a unified and current account of PDDL, covering the subsets of PDDL that express discrete, numeric, temporal, and hybrid planning. Second, we want to introduce readers to the art of modelling planning problems in this language, through educational examples that demonstrate how PDDL is used to model realistic planning problems. The book is intended for advanced students and researchers in AI who want to dive into the mechanics of AI planning, as well as those who want to be able to use AI planning systems without an in-depth explanation of the algorithms and implementation techniques they use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CD-ROM version. The compilation of this dictionary was suggested on the completion of the five-volume International Planning Glossaries. Although the publication of the fifth volume on Planning and Development completed the original programme, it was found that a very substantial number of items of interest to planners fell outside the main classification of subjects embodied in the five volumes. This strongly suggested the publication of a comprehensive dictionary which would concentrate all the essential items in one convenient volume. This dictionary provides a complete selection of terms in use in the many inter-related fields covered by town and country planning. Definitions are included wherever this is necessary to give precision. Cross references are also given for a large number of terms to related terms with which comparison can be usefully made.Although this volume is designed to be used independently it may also be found invaluable for use in

Book excerpt: Human activity overuses the resources of the planet at a rate that will severely compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Changes toward sustainability need to begin within the next few years or environmental deterioration will become irreversible. Thus the need to develop a mindset of sustainable development - the ability of society to meet its needs without permanently compromising the earth's resources - is pressing. The Psychology of Sustainable Development clarifies the meaning of the term and describes the conditions necessary for it to occur. With contributions from an international team of policy shapers and makers, the book will be an important reference for environmental, developmental, social, and organizational psychologists, in addition to other social scientists concerned with the impact current human activity will have on the prospects of future generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Stephens became the focus of international media attention in 2009 for his research on the psychological benefits of swearing as a response to pain. Now, fresh from winning the 2014 Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize, Richard's first popular science book uncovers other pieces of surprising and occasionally bizarre scientific enquiry showing that what we at first perceive as bad can, in fact, be good. More pub conversation than science book, Richard's writing style is very accessible - both engaging and humorous. Think wasting time is bad? Not always! Research shows that taking time out can help you solve difficult problems. And if you can't be bothered tidying up, well fine, research shows that people are more creative in a messy environment. Swearing is rude but research shows that in some situations it can be a form of politeness. Swearing can also be used as a tool of persuasion. Black Sheep casts a slant on a range of human experiences from life to death, sex to romance, from speed thrills to halting boredom and from drinking alcohol (in moderation) to headily excessive bad language. This is a fascinating left-field tour of the world of psychological science. Get ready for the many hidden benefits of being bad that you really won't have seen coming.
