Book Synopsis Zooplankton of the Great Lakes by : Mary D. Balcer
Download or read book Zooplankton of the Great Lakes written by Mary D. Balcer and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, instructors, and students will appreciate this compilation of detailed information on the crustacean zooplankton of the Great Lakes. The authors have gathered data from more than three hundred sources and organized into a useful laboratory manual. The taxonomic keys are easy to use, suitable for both classroom and laboratory identifications. Detailed line drawings are provided to help confirm the identification of the major species. Zoologists, limnologists, hydrobiologists, fish ecologists, and those who study or monitor water quality will welcome this dependable new identification tool. A concise summary of pertinent information on the ecology of these zooplankton is provided in the main body of the text. A check-list of all species reported from each of the Great Lakes and notes on the distribution and abundance of more than a hundred species were compiled from an extensive search of existing literature. In addition, the authors collected samples from several locations on Lake Superior, in order to provide information on the abundance and life histories of the major crustacean species.

Book Synopsis Textbook of Limnology by : Gerald A. Cole
Download or read book Textbook of Limnology written by Gerald A. Cole and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary nature of limnology requires lucid and well-integrated coverage of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, and resource management. Paul Weihe skillfully accomplishes this objective in his revision of Gerald Cole’s classic limnology text. This long-awaited revision introduces concepts in straightforward terms, replete with detailed examples, elegant illustrations, and up-to-date, well-researched documentation. Outstanding features of the fifth edition include: • A global outlook with examples from every continent • Discussions of the impact of environmental challenges (e.g., climate change, eutrophication, river regulation) with case studies of real-world examples • A chapter devoted to wetlands • A thorough examination of biogeochemistry, including recent anthropogenic alteration and a reconsidered understanding of stoichiometric relationships • Expanded treatment of hydrology, utilizing empirical approaches to discharge determination and effects of land-use changes • A reorganized presentation of biodiversity, explicitly correlating profiles of biota with community ecology and ecosystem function • Updated taxonomy with a description of the new metagenomic approach, nomenclature strictly adhering to the intergovernmental Integrated Taxonomic Information System
Book Synopsis Biology of Copepods by : Geoffrey Boxshall
Download or read book Biology of Copepods written by Geoffrey Boxshall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Copepoda, held at the British Museum (Natural History) in London during August 1987. The central theme of the conference was the biology of marine planktonic copepods, although the scientific programme was extremely varied reflecting the wide range of life styles adopted by copepods. The three invited symposia held during the conference focussed attention on particular topical areas of research within the field of marine plankton, and also provided reviews of chosen aspects of copepod biology. These symposia were highly successful. The papers they contained were both informative and stimulating and they bring to this volume a lasting significance. Each symposium was organised by its chairman; Bruce Frost (University of Washington) decided on the balance of topics, selected the speakers and introduced the session on 'The biology and taxonomy of Calanus', Roger Harris (Marine Biological Association) performed the same vital role for 'Experimental studies: rate processes in field populations of planktonic copepods', and Howard Roe (Institute of Oceanographic Sciences) for 'Oceanic and deep-sea copepods'. The impact of these papers will be much enhanced by the large number of high quality contributed and poster papers on marine plankton and by the invited review of 'Copepod luminescence' by Peter Herring (Institute of Oceano graphic Sciences). The fascinating review of 'Copepod eyes' by Mike Land FRS (University of Sussex) is not published here.

Download or read book Life of Inland Waters written by James G. Needham and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a textbook of fresh-water life dealing with its forms, its conditions, its fitnesses, its associations, and its economic aspects. The ecologic side of fresh-water biology is emphasized. Due consideration is given to the educational, economic, sanitary, social, civic, and aesthetic aspects of the subject. Limnology in America today is in its infancy. The value of its past achievements is just beginning to be appreciated. The benefits to come from a more intensive study of water life arc just beginning to be disclosed. That there is a widespread interest is already manifest in the large number of biological stations at which limnological work is being done. We recommend this volume as a general introduction to all students and teachers of this subject.
