Book Synopsis Planning from Below by : Marta Harnecker
Download or read book Planning from Below written by Marta Harnecker and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple and revolutionary toolbox to help any group create an actual and functioning democracy In this book, Marta Harnecker, with Spanish economist José Bartolomé, shares some of her wisdom on how communities everywhere can gain empowerment. For, when impoverished people became involved in the planning process, they no longer feel like beggars demanding solutions from the state; they become the creators of their own destiny. Set out in two parts; this book first demonstrates the importance of community participants working outside a hierarchy, to allow as much decentralization as possible. The second part of the book centers on the methodology of this process: the various tasks taken on by participants and how, in planning processes over years, they are carried out.
Download or read book Manual para el desarrollo de ferrocarriles urbanos written by Daniel Pulido and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Finanzas municipales by : Catherine D. Farvacque-Vitkovic
Download or read book Finanzas municipales written by Catherine D. Farvacque-Vitkovic and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Re-Imagining Community and Civil Society in Latin America and the Caribbean by : Roberta Rice
Download or read book Re-Imagining Community and Civil Society in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Roberta Rice and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American and Caribbean communities and civil societies are undergoing a rapid process of transformation. Instead of pervasive social atomization, political apathy, and hollowed-out democracies, which have become the norm in some parts of the world, this region is witnessing an emerging collaboration between community, civil society, and government that is revitalizing democracy. This book argues that a key explanation lies in the powerful and positive relationship between community and civil society that exists in the region. The ideas of community and civil society tend to be studied separately, as analytically distinct concepts however, this volume seeks to explore their potential to work together. A unique contribution of the work is the space for dialogue it creates between the social sciences and the humanities. Many of the studies included in the volume are based on primary fieldwork and place-based case studies. Others relate literature, music and film to important theoretical works, providing a new direction in interdisciplinary studies, and highlighting the role that the arts play in community revival and broader processes of social change. A truly multi-disciplinary book bridging established notions of civil society and community through an authentically interdisciplinary approach to the topic.
Book Synopsis Making World Development Work by : Grégoire Leclerc
Download or read book Making World Development Work written by Grégoire Leclerc and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors reexamine world development - usually the province of economists - as professionals trained in the natural sciences. They show how we have and might use tested scientific and technical procedures and concepts, as well as science itself, to achieve much better results than what has been characteristic of the past. Leclerc and Hall contend that to scholars with a scientific background, the process of development, and the economic logic behind it, often look almost surrealistic. The basic question at the foundation of this review is this: Why should something so important as world development, something capable of absorbing such vast sums of money and of human goodwill, something that impacts the people and the environment so much, continue to be organized and planned using economic techniques and theories that are both unconfirmed experimentally and proven to have led to development failures?"--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Citizens in Charge by : Isabel Licha
Download or read book Citizens in Charge written by Isabel Licha and published by IDB. This book was released on 2004 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Takes a close look at people's involvement in the new framework of state decentralization. By focusing on the potential as well as the limitations of citizens managing local budgets, the goal is to improve the process of democratization of the state and society. The contributors explore the achievements of the process of decentralization, which is the backdrop for the emerging process of citizen participation in public decisionmaking at the local government level. The volume approaches this issue from a general perspective and up close through case studies. The broad perspective generates a framework for analytical understanding of fiscal decentralization and participation. The case studies highlight local experiences in East Asia - Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines - and Latin America - Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Each case illustrates a particular leadership style and type of participation. Important similarities emerge in the areas of trust, political will, unity among actors, intergovernmental coordination, capacity of government and citizen organizations to generate participatory public policies, and redistribution of power and responsibility between the state and civil society."--Publisher's web site.
Book Synopsis Gender Perspectives and Gender Impacts of the Global Economic Crisis by : Rania Antonopoulos
Download or read book Gender Perspectives and Gender Impacts of the Global Economic Crisis written by Rania Antonopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the full effects of the Great Recession still unfolding, this collection of essays analyses the gendered economic impacts of the crisis. The volume, from an international set of contributors, argues that gender-differentiated economic roles and responsibilities within households and markets can potentially influence the ways in which men and women are affected in times of economic crisis. Looking at the economy through a gender lens, the contributors investigate the antecedents and consequences of the ongoing crisis as well as the recovery policies adopted in selected countries. There are case studies devoted to Latin America, transition economies, China, India, South Africa, Turkey, and the USA. Topics examined include unemployment, the job-creation potential of fiscal expansion, the behavioral response of individuals whose households have experienced loss of income, social protection initiatives, food security and the environment, shedding of jobs in export-led sectors, and lessons learned thus far. From these timely contributions, students, scholars, and policymakers are certain to better understand the theoretical and empirical linkages between gender equality and macroeconomic policy in times of crisis.

It also leads to droughts becoming more severe and the soil becoming less fertile and less responsive to fertiliser. This book brings together the key notes lectures and other outstanding contributions of the I World Congress on Conservation Agriculture and provides an updated view of the environment and economic advantages of CA and of its implementation in diferent areas of the World.
