Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER Named a Best Book of 2021 by Newsweek, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times “A glorious book—an assured novel that’s gorgeously told.” —The New York Times Book Review “An incredibly moving epic about an unforgettable family.” —CBS Sunday Morning “[An] absorbing novel…I felt both grateful to have known these people and bereft at the prospect of leaving them behind.” —The Washington Post A stunning novel about love, work, and marriage that asks how far one family and one community will go to protect their future. Colleen and Rich Gundersen are raising their young son, Chub, on the rugged California coast. It’s 1977, and life in this Pacific Northwest logging town isn’t what it used to be. For generations, the community has lived and breathed timber; now that way of life is threatened. Colleen is an amateur midwife. Rich is a tree-topper. It’s a dangerous job that requires him to scale trees hundreds of feet tall—a job that both his father and grandfather died doing. Colleen and Rich want a better life for their son—and they take steps to assure their future. Rich secretly spends their savings on a swath of ancient redwoods. But when Colleen, grieving the loss of a recent pregnancy and desperate to have a second child, challenges the logging company’s use of the herbicides she believes are responsible for the many miscarriages in the community, Colleen and Rich find themselves on opposite sides of a budding conflict. As tensions in the town rise, they threaten the very thing the Gundersens are trying to protect: their family. Told in prose as clear as a spring-fed creek, Damnation Spring is an intimate, compassionate portrait of a family whose bonds are tested and a community clinging to a vanishing way of life. An extraordinary story of the transcendent, enduring power of love—between husband and wife, mother and child, and longtime neighbors. An essential novel for our times.

Book excerpt: Alien DNA spawned humans, also an alien species on Earth. The gods are extra-terrestrials: in their image we are created. Humanoids were designed to serve as slave labour, given a short life span, and a severely stunted genetic code. We carry within encoded traits of violence, greed, rivalry, amongst others. There will always be wars, as we respond to a programmed pattern of behaviour, and cannot change. The ETgods regarded humans as a failed experiment, after trying to uplift their creation to no avail. The island of Atlantis gave rise to homo sapiens sapiens, and educated earthlings were in turn sent out to the colonies, in order to spread knowledge. Atlantis, up to its final destruction, is the epicentre of this record of events. The conflicts and forces causing its final demise are as relevant today as then. The story is narrated by the ETgod Michael. It encompasses his love for Ondina, an earthling, and their children. It is a love story like any other; the story of a family, like any other family. Michael's friendship with Ondina's brother Rogan, and other humans, is part of his journey in understanding that deep down we are all the same. Ad astra per apsera: to the stars through hardship. Intergalactic explorers, our gods, endure challenges and problems just as we do. Through great loss and tragedy, people from differing worlds, united by friendship, valour and loyalty, discover common values. From beginning to end, the themes of life are everlasting.

Once upon a time, science fiction was only in the future. It was the stuff of drive-ins and cheap double-bills. Book excerpt: From the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time—#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson adds to his Cosmere universe shared by Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive with a new standalone novel that combines fantasy and science fiction. Illustrated by Ernanda Souza, Nabeste Zitro, and kudriaken. Running. Putting distance between himself and the relentless Night Brigade has been Nomad’s strategy for years. Staying one or two steps ahead of his pursuers by skipping through the Cosmere from one world to the next. But now, his powers too depleted to escape, Nomad finds himself trapped on Canticle, a planet that will kill anyone who doesn’t keep moving. Fleeing the fires of a sunrise that melts the very stones, he is instantly caught up in the struggle between a heartless tyrant and the brave rebels who defy him. Failure means a quick death, incinerated by the sun…or a lifetime as a mindless slave. Tormented by the consequences of his past, Nomad must fight not only for his survival—but also for his very soul. Note from Brandon: I sincerely believe that books don’t live until they’re read. While I would write even if no one were reading—it’s who I am—I thrive because I know the stories are being brought to life by all of you. In this, stories are a special kind of art, particularly when written down. Each of you will imagine this book, and its characters, a little differently—you will each put your own stamp on it, making it yours. I don’t believe a story is quite finished until that has happened—until the dream in my head has become a reality (even if briefly) in yours. And so this book is yours, as they all are once you read them. Thank you so much for bringing life to my work, and to the Cosmere.

Book excerpt: Marie Collins possesses information critical to the well-being of the human race. Evil forces strike without pity. Justin learns of his mother's murder while both he and Rachel are ushered away by Eleanor, a spy from Subterrania. Eleanor explains why men who value power and money over human lives and health have murdered Justin's mother. Eleanor is mortally wounded in a shootout with Irish policemen. She renders the policemen unconscious with an Ivorian weapon before dying, and then turns the weapon upon Rachel. She embeds a sophisticated tracking device within Rachel's only dental filling, and implants a communication device within Rachel's left ear canal. Rachel is confined in Brockman Penitentiary, a prison for terrorists and an asylum for the insane. She serves as bait. Justin passes Moeeta's inquisition and is permitted to train as a Quazarian warrior. Golchuron teaches why Outlanders permit monetary gain to take precedence over relief from illnesses such as diabetes, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Justin listens in awe as he learns that Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were both born on the same day. He is astounded as his teacher explains how each of these men impacted the lives of human beings upon the earth's surface and molded the politics of society. Darian Sharp bursts into Rachel's room without knocking. He asks her to explain the contents of a letter that appeared on the front porches of Rachel's home town. Her eyes widen as she reads an invitation to her bridal party. At last Darian departs. She rises and grasps both hands to her breast, and then she breaks out laughing. There was never a nymph in Narnia or an elf in Rivendell that danced and sang with more mirth and abandon than Rachel Faith McMurray in her solitary prison suite.

Individual appendices make it easy to browse works with chorus, solo voices, or solo instruments. Other appendices list orchestral works by instrumentation and duration, as well as works intended for youth concerts. The author takes us on a stunning journey to the Seventh Planet, the Keron system, where ancient magic mixes with technology, and the fate of humanity depends on the descendant of the Great Magician Merlin - who came from Earth. The plot is suspenseful from the very first page. The author masterfully builds a world full of secrets and dangers, and the reader follows the fate of the characters with bated breath. We meet Astilus, a young magician who inherits magical powers from his father and must face powerful enemies. He sets off on a journey - towards Earth, his father's planet, in search of the ancient times - Hermonians, who guard the balance on Earth. But "Natural Rules of Life" is not only a gripping story. It is also a story about growing up, friendship, love and courage. The characters face difficult choices and moral dilemmas, and their struggles force the reader to reflect. The author also raises important problems of the modern world, such as environmental protection and the fight against tyranny. "Natural Principles of Life: Volume I The Seventh Planet of the Galaxy and People" is a book that will surely delight all fantasy fans. I will take you very close to your home and very, very far away - into outer space inhabited, among others, by: · Wibseract Mages, · ancient, intelligent races like Hermonians, · People, · Wolkwiry, · Vampires, · and even the recently created races such as Mrons or the bloodthirsty Harpies. I have prepared for you, at the end of this book, a description of the races and the most important characters appearing in the novel. If you want, you can start getting to know her from there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's Grand Design By: William R. Arnold, Edited by Ms. Aurora Payad-Arnold God’s Grand Design is to restore mankind to its original state of sacred perfection after Adam and Eve fell and created the original sin of disobedience, hiding, and lying to the Lord. When God cursed the serpent for tempting Adam and Eve to be like God, he promised to send his only begotten Son to save humanity. He did via the incarnate word in the womb of the immaculately conceived Virgin Mary. God wants to be man and receive a new body to defeat death through Jesus Christ. Man wants to become God to receive eternal life. Man’s journey to become God starts from being an ignorant baby gaining knowledge, to a cowardly teenager obtaining courage, to an adult converting greed to generosity, to a wise man changing selfishness to unselfishness, and at last, to a free man able to think for himself in eternal service to God in his kingdom. The journey requires him to know right from wrong, good from evil, and God’s will from man’s will and thus defeat evil, worldly temptations, and demonic possession. Through Christ, God and man are destined to become one through three advents, making the God/Man Christ into the new human spirit (blessings). Then, the Man/God Jesus becomes the new human flesh to make all things perfect in the sight of God. Jesus Christ came as a priest on a donkey to decode the Torah, bring knowledge, and remove blindness to defeat sin. By his death and resurrection, he granted free redemption to man’s flesh to give him a new body. The second coming of Jesus Christ as thief in the night will bring awakening to remove deafness by teaching God’s truths to defeat evil. As a just judge on a cloud on his third advent, the Lord will remove mankind’s dumbness to defeat death. And then man can become worthy of receiving God’s rewards of paradise in heaven or heaven on earth.

This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you judge by box office receipts, industry awards, or critical accolades, science fiction films are the most popular movies now being produced and distributed around the world. Nor is this phenomenon new. Sci-fi filmmakers and audiences have been exploring fantastic planets, forbidden zones, and lost continents ever since George Méliès’ 1902 film A Trip to the Moon. In this highly entertaining and knowledgeable book, film historian and pop culture expert Douglas Brode picks the one hundred greatest sci-fi films of all time. Brode’s list ranges from today’s blockbusters to forgotten gems, with surprises for even the most informed fans and scholars. He presents the movies in chronological order, which effectively makes this book a concise history of the sci-fi film genre. A striking (and in many cases rare) photograph accompanies each entry, for which Brode provides a numerical rating, key credits and cast members, brief plot summary, background on the film’s creation, elements of the moviemaking process, analysis of the major theme(s), and trivia. He also includes fun outtakes, including his top ten lists of Fifties sci-fi movies, cult sci-fi, least necessary movie remakes, and “so bad they’re great” classics—as well as the ten worst sci-fi movies (“those highly ambitious films that promised much and delivered nil”). So climb aboard spaceship Brode and journey to strange new worlds from Metropolis (1927) to Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).
