Book excerpt: In the spirit of Stanley and Livingstone, Brian Thacker is striking out for destinations unknown. Under-equipped and totally unprepared, Brian leaves the guide books behind and gets off the beaten track, out of his comfort zone and into trouble in some of the oddest countries you've never heard of. Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Michael Palin all have ventured forth to provide vivid and compelling accounts of exotic peoples and strange lands. But none has ever been daring (or perhaps stupid) enough to arrive in a country not knowing a single thing about the place. Until now. In the spirit of Stanley and Livingstone, Brian Thacker set out for far-flung lands armed with nothing more than an air ticket and an armful of immunisation shots. He didn't know the local language, the currency or even the climate of the various places he was heading for; not to mention their political, religious or cultural situations. He didn't take a guidebook; he didn't even do a quick web search. And so it was that Brian found himself on an incredible journey that would see him set up home inside Gabon airport; dodge civil unrest in Togo; receive a history lesson from a Ghanaian prostitute; anger the Vodou gods of Cotonou; gatecrash the King of Futuna's party; become lost in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan; and narrowly avoid being shot in the backstreets of Bishkek. Brian Thacker has so far managed to get himself lost in 72 countries. He doesn't have his own pith helmet, but he does own a lovely beige safari suit. When he's not lost in the African jungle Brian lives in Melbourne with his wife Natalie and daughter Jasmine.

Follow Dan as he climbs aboard a penny-farthing for a jaunt around west London, drives a steam train through the 'alps', joins the pit lane crew of Mitsubishi for the Britcar 24-hour race at Silverstone, discovers the link between Lawrence of Arabia and the 'wall of death', meets tank (yes, tank) collectors and the men behind 'digger ballet', learns to fly in the shadow of Douglas Bader and, along the way, wrestles with Aristotle, Jeremy Clarkson, Plato, Hunter S. Thompson and, mostly, himself. Join Dan as he makes a journey of discovery into another world, the happy and quirky world of the Great British potterer and machine enthusiast. Could he even be tempted to stay there?

Book excerpt: A paperback version of the Elephant's Child, which documents the creation of Bishop Bright Grammar School (now the Trinity School) in Leamington Spa, whose liberal approach to education and catholicism sent shockwaves throughout the Birmingham Diocese. Peter Hastings (1922-2012) was the Catholic Headmaster of Bishop Bright and encouraged his students to remain full of "satiable curteousity" and challenged them to be the best that they could be. A great lesson to all educators, not just those from Christian Schools, about the power self awarness and curiosity gives to children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent food journalist follows the trail from Big Pizza to square tomatoes to exploding food prices to Wall Street, trying figure out why we can't all have healthy, delicious, affordable food In 2008, farmers grew enough to feed twice the world's population, yet more people starved than ever before?and most of them were farmers. In Bet the Farm, food writer Kaufman sets out to discover the connection between the global food system and why the food on our tables is getting less healthy and less delicious even as the the world's biggest food companies and food scientists say things are better than ever. To unravel this riddle, he moves down the supply chain like a detective solving a mystery, revealing a force at work that is larger than Monsanto, McDonalds or any of the other commonly cited culprits?and far more shocking. Kaufman's recent cover story for Harper's, "The Food Bubble," provoked controversy throughout the food world, and led to appearances on the NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, Fox Business News, Democracy Now, and Bloomberg TV, along with features on National Public Radio and the BBC World Service. Visits the front lines of the food supply system and food politics as Kaufman visits farms, food science research labs, agribusiness giants, the United Nations, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and more Explains how food has been financialized and the powerful consequences of this change, including: the Arab Spring, started over rising food prices; farmers being put out of business; food scientists rushing to make easy-to-transport, homogenized ingredients instead of delicious foods Explains how the push for sustainability in food production is more likely to make everything worse, rather than better?and how the rise of fast food is bad for us, but catastrophic for those who will never even see a McNugget or frozen pizza

Book excerpt: Global warming will either grab your interest or see you running in the opposite direction. But there is another way. It is a truth that is never realized, a truth that cannot surface once buried in the media and in politicians’ singlespeak, and a truth that is tantalizingly beyond your reach. How to Kill an Elephant exposes this truth for all to see, yet this is not a book about global warming; it is a book about human nature exposed for all its inadequacies. It starts with elephants, inexorably being driven to extinction by elephants of our own creation. Where does it finish? That’s for you to decide. Fancy a cane toad sandwich washed down with a cup of tea? Have you ever seen stalactites playing chess? You can expect a deadly serious read with a soupçon of levity and straightforward humour, because life really is too short not to indulge a little.

The more we learn about these things, the more we can keep healthy and adopt behaviors to keep others healthy as well. Book excerpt: The Mad Professor is the story of one man's battle in the 1960-70's Pacific Northwest against institutionalized bureaucracy and the strangulating effects of academic politics. Leo Bauer is first encouraged and then destroyed by the academic machine. The novel is literary, not easy to pigeonhole. The Mad Professor is a divergent novel, a confession of sorts by a man subversive to the organizations governing his life while remaining committed in his dedication to the natural world of Wisconsin, Utah, and Washington whose natural history is contemplated and analyzed. Bureaucracy represented by a community college is explored through hallucinations, stream of consciousness and magical realism. While Leo Bauer searches for authenticity life hammers him and he suffers losses of his profession, wife, reputation and assets during the Vietnam era, the time of sex, drugs, rock and roll, oil crisis and recession. Despite the somber nature of his struggle the novel has a great deal of broad and satiric humor. Leo Bauer's fantasy world becomes wilder and wilder including his exploration of a huge DNA Helix, the prophecies of a lobotomized fellow teacher, and the Curriculum of Death in which students are bombed and attacked with strafing airplanes. This digressive narrative resists linearity. Leo Bauer commences life in Wisconsin where he experiences paradise among the lakes and forests. Throughout this man searches for authenticity in a culture of false values. Librarians and booksellers should classify it as community college satire.
