To reduce some mathematical difficulties, assumptions of small strain with quasistatic plane strain conditions are consistently made. The solution is obtained for a system of nonhomogeneous anisotorpic viscoelastic media and subsequently reduced to that for a homogeneous medium. Numerical results are presented for a general anisotropic viscoelastic model medium and compared with results for the elastic and viscoelastic medium in the isotropic case. (Author).

Book excerpt: A plane elastic problem of bodies bounded by concentric circles and heated at the inner boundary is solved in the "uncoupled, quasi-static" approximation. The heating takes place by surface heat transfer, with limiting cases corresponding to sudden temperature change and to constant flux of heat. The stress boundary conditions treated are those of constant flux of heat. The time-dependent results for stresses, displacement, and temperature are calculated and shown for several cases with varying values for the parameters specifying heat transfer and wall thickness. Formulas for steady-state distributions of the quantities of interest are also given, as well as some approximate results that can be used for very small times.

Book excerpt: The departure of the plane-strain from the generalized plane-stress solution is explored quantitatively in connection with a particular boundary-value problem in the special case of isothermal viscoelastic theory. The problem is that of a viscoelastic circular cylinder which rotates about its geometric axis. The corresponding angular velocity is assumed to be switched on instantaneously at some initial instant and is supposed to be constant thereafter. The solutions obtained are particularize to each other in the initial elastic state, diverge monotonically as time progresses. It is also found that the generalized plane-stress value of the radial displacement at the periphery of the cylinder tends to infinity with time, while the corresponding displacement in the plane-strain so to, and discussed numerically for, the Maxwell solid. It is found that the plane-strain and the generalized plane-stress values of the hoop stress at the periphery of the cylinder, which are relatively close to each other in the initial elastic state, diverge monotonically as time progresses. It is also found that the generalized plane-stress value of the radial displacement at the periphery of the cylinder tends to infinity with time, while the corresponding displacement in the plane-strain solution approaches a finite value in this limit. A method involving separate integration with respect to the time and space variables gave solutions for particular viscoelastic materials represented by models with a finite number of springs and dashpots. A general method of solution was also developed which can be applied to general linear viscoelastic materials characterized by integral operators or the differential operator forms associated with model representation. Expressions for stress and deformation components are obtained for particular materials, and selection of these is exhibited graphically. The cylinder is loaded with a temperature change; however, thermomechanical coupling effects are neglected. The Correspondence Principle is employed to convert the thermoviscoelastic problem to its corresponding thermoelasticity problem in Laplace Transform space. A closed-form formulation is then developed for each layer, assuming a state of generalized plane strain, to solve for a general solution of the corresponding thermoelastic problem. The Laplace Transformed solution is completed by satisfying boundary conditions at the inner and outer surfaces of the cylinder and continuity conditions between adjacent layers. The solution process is expedited by replacing two undetermined coefficients in the assumed form of the thermoelastic solution with the normal stresses at the inner and outer of the cylinder and satisfying the continuity conditions between adjacent layers. Finally, direct Laplace Transform Inversion is used to yield the quasi-static thermoviscoelastic solution. Viscoelasticity, Thick composite cylinders, Laplace transformation.
