Download or read book 100 BEST POSTERS 20 written by 100 BESTE PLAKATE E. V. and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 20 years the association 100 Beste Plakate e.V. has been spotlighting the most groundbreaking poster designs from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In its anniversary year, the group and its members are facing existential questions, just like graphic designers all over the world. The coronavirus has laid waste not only to people's lives but to cultural life as well. In our day and age, museums are closed while people are still allowed to shop at DIY stores; they can get a haircut, but theatres remain off-limits. The place of culture in society is shifting, which most often means it is becoming less relevant. But what is society without culture?0Some of the posters included in this book were made for events that never happened, for billboards that remained empty, for an audience that wasn't there.0These upheavals have had an impact not only on the selection of the 100 best posters of 2020, but also on current trends in the graphic arts. Last year, as the authorities imposed restrictions, or in some cases even outright bans, on interpersonal communication, the desire for visual communication and design seemed to grow by the same measure. This book and the posters presented in it can be regarded as a physical testimony to the time and space that was lost in 2020.00Exhibition: Traveling exhibition: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Moldavia, South Korea (2021-2022).

Book Synopsis The Art of Taking a Walk by : Anke Gleber
Download or read book The Art of Taking a Walk written by Anke Gleber and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anke Gleber examines one of the most intriguing and characteristic figures of European urban modernity: the observing city stroller, or flaneur. In an age transformed by industrialism, the flaneur drifted through city streets, inspired and repelled by the surrounding scenes of splendor and squalor. Gleber examines this often elusive figure in the particular contexts of Weimar Germany and the intellectual sphere of Walter Benjamin, with whom the concept of flanerie is often associated. She sketches the European influences that produced the German flaneur and establishes the figure as a pervasive presence in Weimar culture, as well as a profound influence on modern perceptions of public space. The book begins by exploring the theory of literary flanerie and the technological changes--street lighting, public transportation, and the emergence of film--that gave a new status to the activities of seeing and walking in the modern city. Gleber then assesses the place of flanerie in works by Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer, and other representatives of Weimar literature, arts, and theory. She draws particular attention to the works of Franz Hessel, a Berlin flaneur who argued that flanerie is a "reading" of the city that perceives passersby, streets, and fleeting impressions as the transitory signs of modernity. Gleber also examines connections between flanerie and Weimar film, and discusses female flanerie as a means of asserting female subjectivity in the public realm. The book is a deeply original and searching reassessment of the complex intersections among modernity, vision, and public space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - Groundbreaking corporate design, advertising, author graphics, and poster art - Explores how designs can be described in wordsEvery year the association 100 Beste Plakate e. V. presents awards to honor the most innovative and trendsetting poster designs from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The yearbook has fast become the go-to source for graphic artists, designers, and advertisers. Even today, the traditional printed poster is still regarded as the ultimate challenge in the graphic arts. The 2019 yearbook focuses on how designs can be described verbally. What is the relationship between language and image? How can visual codes and phenomena or trends be captured in words? Thirty designers, curators, artists, architects, and theorists were invited to join the project and to describe the selected posters. The purpose of this exercise was not to come up with a standard jury statement, but to point out ways of interacting personally with the poster: either by offering an objective description or by delivering a subjective critique in the form of an essay.Florian Lamm and Jakob Kirch, who created this year's book, have translated this conceptual task into their design by dividing the catalogue into two parts. While the 30 text contributions have been united in a booklet, a separate image section presents the corresponding posters.Text in English and German.

Book excerpt: The funding body of the association 100 Beste Plakate e.V. (100 Best Posters) has been holding an annual competition since 2002. Out of 2000 entries, an international jury - whose members change every year - awards ground-breaking posters from advertising, corporate design and author graphics. Established institutions, graphic design firms and advertising agencies located in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are eligible for application as well as students enrolled at any German-speaking university or design school. The association not only aims to award outstanding achievements, but seeks to present the diversity of a medium that despite the ever increasing digitalisation of information has asserted itself as a means of announcement in public places or as a visualised message close to art. Meanwhile, the association has long become an independent authority which promotes the creative power of the genre. The selected posters are shown in exhibitions at home and abroad for several weeks at a time and are published in a yearbook. Starting with the 2016 edition, Verlag Kettler has the honour of publishing the results of the competition.

Download or read book The Poster written by Jurgen Doring and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunningly illustrated book examines the history of poster design and its relation to the arts and broader culture. The poster is a versatile marketing tool widely used from the 19th century to today for everything from political events to movies. A good poster has many layers, it goes beyond advertising and makes statements about style, history, fashion, and taste at the time. It is these layers that can turn a poster into a work of art. This book showcases 480 posters by more than 200 artists and designers and tells a comprehensive history of the poster. The book includes Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Pop art, and contemporary posters from preeminent artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Egon Schiele, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol and from noted designers ranging from Lucian Bernhard and A.M. Cassandre to Saul Bass, Tadanori Yokoo, and Stefan Sagmeister. The book also introduces many other leading poster designers whose names are less well-known. Contemporary advertisements for Calvin Klein, United Colors of Benetton, and Coachella are also explored. By tracing the history of the poster, this book shows social developments throughout the world and illuminates how art styles have changed over time.
