Book excerpt: Today, relevant data are typically delivered to cloud-based servers for storing and analysis in order to extract key features and enable enhanced applications beyond the basic transmission of raw data and to realize the possibilities associated with the impending Internet of Things (IoT). To allow for quicker, more efficient, and expanded privacy-preserving services, a new trend called Fog Computing has emerged: moving these responsibilities to the network's edge. Traditional centralized cloud computing paradigms confront new problems posed by IoT application growth, including high latency, limited storage, and outages due to a lack of available resources. Fog Computing puts the cloud and IoT devices closer together to address these issues. Instead of sending IoT data to the cloud, the fog processes and stores it locally at IoT devices. Unlike the cloud, fog-based services have a faster reaction time and better quality overall. Fog Computing, Cloud Computing, and their connectivity with the IoT are discussed in this book, with an emphasis on the advantages and implementation issues. It also explores the various architectures and appropriate IoT applications. Fog Computing, Cloud Computing, and Internet of Things are being suggested as potential research directions. Features: A systematic overview of the state-of-the-art in Cloud Computing, Fog Computing, and Internet of Things Recent research results and some pointers to future advancements in architectures and methodologies Detailed examples from clinical studies using several different data sets

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through sensors, actuators and other Internet-connected devices, applications and services are becoming able to perceive and react on the real world. Seamlessly integrating people, and devices is no longer a futuristic idea. Converging the physical world with the human-made realm into one network is rather a present and promising approach called The Internet of Things (IoT). A closer look at the phenomenon of IoT reveals many problems. The current trends are focusing on Cloud-centric approaches to deal with the heterogeneity and the scale of this network. The blessing of the Cloud computing becomes, however, a burden on latency-sensitive applications, which require processing and storage mechanisms in their proximity to meet low-latency, location and better context-awareness requirements. In addition to mobility support and high geographical distribution requirements. Fog computing is a new concept that focuses on extending the Cloud paradigm to the edge of the Internet of Things, via providing communication, computing, and access management support. This research project foresees and is driven by the promising opportunities of the concept behind Fog computing. In this thesis, we leverage this new concept by delivering a Collaboration Architecture for the Fog computing. This architecture constitutes a referential model to better design and to implement Fog platforms. It powers the freedom of abstraction to make development and deployment at the Fog nodes easier and more efficient. Moreover, it provides a nest where IoT-connected objects can interact and collaborate. To this end, we introduce expressive mechanisms to define and abstract objects, data analytics, and services. To leverage Fog nodes with dynamic services and service-based collaboration, we propose the concept of Operation: a formal way to dynamically generate new services through mechanisms such as aggregation, composition, and transformation. Finally, we deliver a comprehensive study and a collaboration-oriented access control model for the proposed architecture.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an extraordinary growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its protocols. The increasing diffusion of electronic devices with identification, computing and communication capabilities is laying ground for the emergence of a highly distributed service and networking environment. The above mentioned situation implies that there is an increasing demand for advanced IoT data management and processing platforms. Such platforms require support for multiple protocols at the edge for extended connectivity with the objects, but also need to exhibit uniform internal data organization and advanced data processing capabilities to fulfill the demands of the application and services that consume IoT data. One of the initial approaches to address this demand is the integration between IoT and the Cloud computing paradigm. There are many benefits of integrating IoT with Cloud computing. The IoT generates massive amounts of data, and Cloud computing provides a pathway for that data to travel to its destination. But today's Cloud computing models do not quite fit for the volume, variety, and velocity of data that the IoT generates. Among the new technologies emerging around the Internet of Things to provide a new whole scenario, the Fog Computing paradigm has become the most relevant. Fog computing was introduced a few years ago in response to challenges posed by many IoT applications, including requirements such as very low latency, real-time operation, large geo-distribution, and mobility. Also this low latency, geo-distributed and mobility environments are covered by the network architecture MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) that provides an IT service environment and Cloud-computing capabilities at the edge of the mobile network, within the Radio Access Network (RAN) and in close proximity to mobile subscribers. Fog computing addresses use cases with requirements far beyond Cloud-only solution capabilities. The interplay between Cloud and Fog computing is crucial for the evolution of the so-called IoT, but the reach and specification of such interplay is an open problem. This thesis aims to find the right techniques and design decisions to build a scalable distributed system for the IoT under the Fog Computing paradigm to ingest and process data. The final goal is to explore the trade-offs and challenges in the design of a solution from Edge to Cloud to address opportunities that current and future technologies will bring in an integrated way. This thesis describes an architectural approach that addresses some of the technical challenges behind the convergence between IoT, Cloud and Fog with special focus on bridging the gap between Cloud and Fog. To that end, new models and techniques are introduced in order to explore solutions for IoT environments. This thesis contributes to the architectural proposals for IoT ingestion and data processing by 1) proposing the characterization of a platform for hosting IoT workloads in the Cloud providing multi-tenant data stream processing capabilities, the interfaces over an advanced data-centric technology, including the building of a state-of-the-art infrastructure to evaluate the performance and to validate the proposed solution. 2) studying an architectural approach following the Fog paradigm that addresses some of the technical challenges found in the first contribution. The idea is to study an extension of the model that addresses some of the central challenges behind the converge of Fog and IoT. 3) Design a distributed and scalable platform to perform IoT operations in a moving data environment. The idea after study data processing in Cloud, and after study the convenience of the Fog paradigm to solve the IoT close to the Edge challenges, is to define the protocols, the interfaces and the data management to solve the ingestion and processing of data in a distributed and orchestrated manner for the Fog Computing paradigm for IoT in a moving data environment.

Book excerpt: In recent times, the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices/sensors increased tremendously. To support the computational demand of real-time latency-sensitive applications of largely geo-distributed IoT devices/sensors, a new computing paradigm named 'Fog computing' has been introduced as the demerits of cloud computing lie in the velocity, bandwidth, and privacy of data. Fog computing is an extension of cloud computing, and it is one of the most important archetype in the current world. Fog computing is like cloud computing as it provides data storage, computation, processing capabilities. IoT edge computing is significantly different from non-IoT edge computing, with distinct demands and considerations. IoT devices typically have limited data processing and storage capabilities, so substantial data processing needs to occur off the device, with the edge offering an environment to undertake this processing and manage large volumes of IoT devices and data. This, in turn, can reduce device cost, as many functions can be off-loaded to the edge. The location of the edge itself has various possibilities and will differ according to the use case. For example, the edge for IoT could reside at an operator's local or regional data centre, at a base station or at a dedicated server on the customer's premises. This book features Fog and Edge Computing with respect to Cloud, Mobile, IoT and IIoT technologies from evolution, architecture, implementation and design. All aspects have been covered with in-depth real-life and practical use cases from industry. This book covers the curriculum of the Fog/Edge Computing course at prominent global Universities / Institutions. Simply In Depth.....

IoT establishes such intelligent information connections using billions of mobile devices and sensors and well-developed communication infrastructures. Analyzing the IoT big data enables the organizations to optimize their operation efficiency and enhance their value-added services to customers. However, IoT still faces many great challenges due to the manageability of a large amount of distributed devices and the complexity of handling the huge data flows. The enormous amount of data that generated from distributed sources presents significant challenges to data movement in existing computing paradigms and infrastructures, in terms of both performance and expenditures. We explore the current IoT architecture and observe that the functionalities of computation and communication are decoupled in conventional cloud computing and mobile computing paradigms, which leads to an inferior quality of service and the real-time intelligence in IoT big data era. My two-part dissertation work tackles this issue by proposing new data center architectures and optimizing the networked systems. In the first part, we propose "In-situ computing." This novel computing paradigm offloads the computation functionalities from conventional locations such as cloud data center to a series of renewable energy-powered in-situ data centers that are deployed along the data collection paths. By doing so, the computation is converged with communication. The in-situ computing enables the "intelligence-added communication" that provides the faster data analysis at data generation site and lower expenditure. Building the efficient intelligence-added communication also poses challenges to current cloud and carrier networking system. The advent of software-defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) provides the potential to improve portability and scalability of network function deployment in X86 server-based in-situ data centers. We propose and design a variety of frameworks that optimize virtual network function deployment in both hypervisor-based and container-based NFV environments. Moreover, emerging IoT applications, such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), intelligent transportation systems, and smart factories require ultra-low latency for data communication and processing. Fog/edge computing is a new computing paradigm where fully distributed fog/edge nodes located nearby end devices provide computing resources. By analyzing, filtering, and processing at local fog/edge resources instead of transferring tremendous data to the centralized cloud servers, fog/edge computing can reduce the processing delay and network traffic significantly. With these advantages, fog/edge computing is expected to be one of the key enabling technologies for building the IoT infrastructure. Aiming to explore the recent research and development on fog/edge computing technologies for building an IoT infrastructure, this book collected 10 articles. The selected articles cover diverse topics such as resource management, service provisioning, task offloading and scheduling, container orchestration, and security on edge/fog computing infrastructure, which can help to grasp recent trends, as well as state-of-the-art algorithms of fog/edge computing technologies.
