Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of the Rural Economy in an University Curriculum: An Inaugural Lecture Delivered at the Schools on February 1, 1907 IT is a time-honoured custom in this, as in other Universities, for the new occupant of a Chair to be privileged to address those interested in his department on some phase of the subject that has been entrusted to his direction. Naturally he regards the occasion as furnishing a favourable opportunity for reviewing the past, discussing the present, or forecasting the future; and, ' guided by the particular circumstances of the case, he attempts to interest his audience in the life and work of the founder, in the historical developments of his subject, or in his own aspirations as to the growth and progress of his department. My own inclinations lead me towards an attempt to outline possible developments in Rural Economy as a subject of instruction and re search within this University; but before doing so it may be well to look backwards and see what has already been done, and outwards, and see what others are doing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together researchers from different fields, traditions and perspectives to examine the ways in which place and space might (be) unsettle(d). Researchers from across the humanities and social sciences have been drawn to the study of place and space since the 1970s, and the term ‘unsettled’ has been an occasional but recurring presence in this body of scholarship. Though it has been used to invoke a range of meanings, from the dangerous to the liberating, the term itself has rarely been at the centre of sustained examination. This collection highlights the idea of the unsettled in the scholarly investigation of place and space. The respective chapters offer a dialogue between a diverse and eclectic group of researchers, crossing significant disciplinary and interdisciplinary boundaries in the process. The purpose of the collection is to juxtapose a range of different approaches to, and perspectives on, the unsettling of place and space. In doing so, Interdisciplinary Unsettlings of Place and Space makes an important contribution and offers new insights into how scholarship and research into different fields and practices may help us re-envision place and space.

Download or read book The Rural Economy written by Great Britain. Further Education Unit and published by . This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents an overview of how the further, higher, and adult education (FHE) system in England should support the rural economy. It is meant to relate to the changing agricultural scene, its diversification, the movement of people, and the well-being of the community. The first seven chapters of the booklet describe the nature of the agricultural industry, its work force and problems, and the present state of the art with respect to post-school education and training in rural areas. Chapters 8 and 9 analyze the changes and their implications for FHE. Chapter 10 presents the following conclusions: (1) agriculture will remain the dominant industry, but not necessarily the major employer of skilled labor; (2) tourism, small business, new technology, and other forms of diversification will erode many of the boundaries that presently exist between agricultural and other colleges; and (3) marketing and access are key words--the needs of the rural community should be served. If the FHE system does not serve this population, other providers will fill the gap and displace FHE from its traditional role. Twenty-two references are cited; two appendixes provide lists of research and collaborative projects. (KC)
