The recent emphasis upon visual education has created the impression in the minds of many persons that the movement is very new. This is not true. Slides and stereo graphs have been used in schools for over two decades and such visual aids as charts, models, diagrams, pictures and museum exhibits for a much longer period. Dudley Grant' Hays of Chicago, A. W. Abrams of Albany, New York, C. R. Toothaker of Philadelphia, W. M. The tremendous vogue of the moving picture and the new emphasis it has given picture language, has impelled educators to bring films and slides into the schools. But the motion picture, especially, involved the use of unfamiliar and costly machines, and films required a technical knowl edge Of storage, patching and shipping. Book Synopsis Moving Pictures and Classic Images by : Samuel K. Rubin
Download or read book Moving Pictures and Classic Images written by Samuel K. Rubin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, Samuel K. Rubin founded 8mm Collector, the predecessor to Classic Images, a widely respected publication in the vintage film hobby that celebrates the golden age of Hollywood. He was instrumental in beginning the "vintage film fan movement," founding The Society for Cinephiles, as well as organizing the Cinecon vintage film conventions. This is simultaneously a history of the vintage film hobby, a history of Classic Images, and a memoir of Rubin's forty years in the center of the hobby's world. Rubin has drawn from his personal experiences with industry professionals from the silent and early sound era, and from his service during the more than 320 issues of Classic Images published since that magazine's inception. The book covers the birth of 8mm Collector and includes reviews of the classic films, reviews of books and videos of the early screen and profiles of classic film industry personalities. Classic Images still provides a medium for film enthusiasts to share their experiences with different vendors, buy and sell movie memorabilia, and generally covers the entire movie industry from the viewpoint of the collector.
Download or read book Charles Urban written by Luke McKernan and published by Royal College of General Practitioners. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on original research from Charles Urban’s own papers, this is the first biography of this influential film maker and innovator. It is also a historical study of the development of the non-fiction film in Britain and America in the early years of cinema, told through the experiences of the leading pioneer of the form. Charles Urban was a renowned figure in his time, and he has remained a name in film history chiefly for his development of Kinemacolor, the world’s first successful natural colour moving picture system. He was also a pioneer in the filming of war, science, travel, actuality and news, a fervent advocate of the value of film as an educative force, and a controversial but important innovator of film propaganda in wartime. The book uses Urban’s story as a means of showing how the non-fiction film developed in the period 1897-1925, and the dilemmas that it faced within a cinema culture in which the entertainment fiction film was dominant. Urban’s solutions – some successful, some less so – illustrate the groundwork that led to the development of documentary film. The book considers the roles of film as informer, educator and generator of propaganda, and the social and aesthetic function of colour in the years when cinema was still working out what it was capable of and how best to reach audiences. Luke McKernan also curates a web resource on Charles Urban at www.charlesurban.com Winner of the Kraszna-Krausz Moving Image Book Award 2014.

This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visual Instruction Through Lantern Slides and Motion Picture Films Psychologists tell us that eighty-five percent of our thinking comes from a visual stimulus. How many times have you heard this question in the schoolroom: Don't you see what I mean? Why does the teacher make this appeal time after time in almost every recitation, whether it be mathematics, his tory, or English? She hasn't stopped to analyze. She' knows that in her own mind her thinking is a question of seeing and that she understands when she sees, and that, after all, thinking can be for the most part transformed into the pictorial element and that after she can get the student to see in terms of the pictorial then her purpose becomes suddenly accomplished.
