Excerpt: ...Experts interpreted the sculpturing as an illustration of the passage in Luke i., 28-38, which tells us of the intimation to Mary by the angel Gabriel that she would be the mother of Jesus. Hence the stone came to be known as the Annunciation Stone. At the top of the picture is shown the emblem of God the Father. On the right of it Gabriel is represented with outspread wings, holding in his right hand a sceptre and in his left a scroll, and proceeding towards the beams, on which is seen the emblem of the Holy Ghost descending towards the Virgin. On the scroll in old capitals are the words " Ave Gratia Plena Dns Tec " (the two last words contracted from Dominus Tecum); translated in the revised version, --" Hail, thou that art highly favoured; the Lord is with thee." Before the Virgin on the left is a pillar-table, on which a book rests, having on it in abbreviated Latin Mary's answer: --Ecce Ancilla Di Fiat MiCHi s v T (Secumdum verbum tuum)--' Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." In front of the little table is a two-handed pot with the lily in it, the supposed emblem of purity. On the right of it in the lower centre of the stone is a shield with the arms of George Dury, the last Abbot of Dunfermline. Below the arms are shown the supposed figures noo, which gave rise to a great deal of antiquarian argumentation and speculation. In 1859, when Mr John Ions, photographer, Dunfermline, further cleaned the stone for the purpose of taking a photograph, it was discerned that the supposed figures noo formed really "fido," and the prefix "con" was also revealed. Hence it is assumed that " confido " was the motto of the Dury arms. " Thus," says Dr Henderson in his 1859 note, " is set at rest, and satisfactorily...

Download or read book Great Minds of Business and Economics written by Henry Ford and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three classic works on the art of succeeding in business, life, and high finance from three of modern history’s most influential thought leaders. My Life and Work: A legendary inventor and industrialist, Henry Ford pioneered the American automotive industry. In this combination of memoir and business treatise, he describes his early life as a mechanically inclined farmer’s son, the inner workings of his eponymous motor company, and the development of the Model T. He also discusses key workplace principles such as compensating workers beyond the prevailing wage and building a diverse workforce. The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie: Scottish immigrant Andrew Carnegie worked his way up from bobbin boy to telegraph operator to railroad man, learning lessons along the way that would lead to his unparalleled success in the steel industry. In this acclaimed memoir, he shares his story of living the American dream, as well as insights on education, business, and the need to give back for the common good. Lombard Street: Written in response to a nineteenth-century banking crisis in England, Walter Bagehot’s influential treatise was one of the first to clearly explain complex financial systems in accessible language. As editor in chief of the Economist, Bagehot also makes proposals for strengthening the economy, such as allowing irresponsible banks to collapse and creating strong central banks to combat inflation. His insights are as relevant today as they were when the book was first published in 1873.

Book Synopsis Great American Lives by : Benjamin Franklin
Download or read book Great American Lives written by Benjamin Franklin and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 1928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brilliant, captivating, and unforgettable memoirs from four of the greatest minds in American history. Penned between 1771 and 1790 and published after his death, TheAutobiography of Benjamin Franklin is one of the most acclaimed and widely read personal histories ever written. From his youth as a printer’s assistant working for his brother’s Boston newspaper through his own publishing, writing, and military careers, his scientific experiments and worldwide travels, his grand triumphs and heartbreaking tragedies, Franklin tells his story with aplomb, bringing to life the flesh-and-blood man behind the American icon. Completed just days before his death, Ulysses S. Grant’s Personal Memoirs is a clear and compelling account of his military career, focusing on two great conflicts: the Mexican–American War and the Civil War. Lauded for its crisp and direct prose, Grant’s autobiography offers frank insight into everything from the merits of the war with Mexico to the strategies and tactics employed by Union forces against the Confederacy to the poignancy of Grant’s meeting with General Lee at Appomattox Court House. Documenting a world of tariffs, insider deals, and Wall Street sharks as well as his stunning rise from bobbin boy to steel baron, The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie opens a window into the great industrialist’s decision-making process. His insights on education, business, and the necessity of giving back for the common good set an inspirational example for aspiring executives and provide a fitting testament to the power of the American dream. The Education of Henry Adams is the Pulitzer Prize–winning memoir of a brilliant man reckoning with an era of profound change. The great-grandson of President John Adams and the grandson of President John Quincy Adams, Henry Adams possessed one of the most remarkable minds of his generation. Yet he believed himself fundamentally unsuited to the era in which he lived—the tumultuous period between the Civil War and World War I. Written in third person, this uniquely unclassifiable autobiography is the Modern Library’s number-one nonfiction book of the twentieth century. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.
