Book Synopsis Minimal Surfaces and Functions of Bounded Variation by : Giusti
Download or read book Minimal Surfaces and Functions of Bounded Variation written by Giusti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of finding minimal surfaces, i. e. of finding the surface of least area among those bounded by a given curve, was one of the first considered after the foundation of the calculus of variations, and is one which received a satis factory solution only in recent years. Called the problem of Plateau, after the blind physicist who did beautiful experiments with soap films and bubbles, it has resisted the efforts of many mathematicians for more than a century. It was only in the thirties that a solution was given to the problem of Plateau in 3-dimensional Euclidean space, with the papers of Douglas [DJ] and Rado [R T1, 2]. The methods of Douglas and Rado were developed and extended in 3-dimensions by several authors, but none of the results was shown to hold even for minimal hypersurfaces in higher dimension, let alone surfaces of higher dimension and codimension. It was not until thirty years later that the problem of Plateau was successfully attacked in its full generality, by several authors using measure-theoretic methods; in particular see De Giorgi [DG1, 2, 4, 5], Reifenberg [RE], Federer and Fleming [FF] and Almgren [AF1, 2]. Federer and Fleming defined a k-dimensional surface in IR" as a k-current, i. e. a continuous linear functional on k-forms. Their method is treated in full detail in the splendid book of Federer [FH 1].
Book Synopsis Media Education in Action by : Alberto Parola
Download or read book Media Education in Action written by Alberto Parola and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media Education (ME) has come a long way. Today, it can no longer be considered a field of study reserved for semiotic and communication researchers. Nor can it be regarded as a privileged practice of those teachers, who for some reason consider media of fundamental importance. On one hand, ME is now part of the agenda of international organizations, which consider the development of media competences a necessary requisite to fully exercise citizenship in the current contemporary society. On the other, ME practices are becoming increasingly widespread in schools involving a growing number of teachers. Notwithstanding, teaching the media still seems to be a rather solipsistic task where «everything is fine». Indeed, in ME there is a tremendous lack of research concerning the educational practices' quality and effectiveness. This book tries to cope with these issues by providing a set of instruments to design, develop and evaluate ME activities in schools, and supporting the enhancement of media educators' knowledge and skills.
Book Synopsis Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum by : Maria Lucia Ferruzza
Download or read book Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum written by Maria Lucia Ferruzza and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ancient world, terracotta sculpture was ubiquitous. Readily available and economical—unlike stone suitable for carving—clay allowed artisans to craft figures of remarkable variety and expressiveness. Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily attest to the prolific coroplastic workshops that supplied sacred and decorative images for sanctuaries, settlements, and cemeteries. Sixty terracottas are investigated here by noted scholar Maria Lucia Ferruzza, comprising a selection of significant types from the Getty’s larger collection—life-size sculptures, statuettes, heads and busts, altars, and decorative appliqués. In addition to the comprehensive catalogue entries, the publication includes a guide to the full collection of over one thousand other figurines and molds from the region by Getty curator of antiquities Claire L. Lyons. Reflecting the Getty's commitment to open content, Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum is available online at www.getty.edu/publications/terracottas and may be downloaded for free.
Book Synopsis Implicit Partial Differential Equations by : Bernard Dacorogna
Download or read book Implicit Partial Differential Equations written by Bernard Dacorogna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-08-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear partial differential equations has become one of the main tools of mod ern mathematical analysis; in spite of seemingly contradictory terminology, the subject of nonlinear differential equations finds its origins in the theory of linear differential equations, and a large part of functional analysis derived its inspiration from the study of linear pdes. In recent years, several mathematicians have investigated nonlinear equations, particularly those of the second order, both linear and nonlinear and either in divergence or nondivergence form. Quasilinear and fully nonlinear differential equations are relevant classes of such equations and have been widely examined in the mathematical literature. In this work we present a new family of differential equations called "implicit partial differential equations", described in detail in the introduction (c.f. Chapter 1). It is a class of nonlinear equations that does not include the family of fully nonlinear elliptic pdes. We present a new functional analytic method based on the Baire category theorem for handling the existence of almost everywhere solutions of these implicit equations. The results have been obtained for the most part in recent years and have important applications to the calculus of variations, nonlin ear elasticity, problems of phase transitions and optimal design; some results have not been published elsewhere.

Book Synopsis Regenerative Territories by : Libera Amenta
Download or read book Regenerative Territories written by Libera Amenta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides new perspectives on circular economy and space, explored towards the definition of regenerative territories characterised by healthy metabolisms. Going beyond the mere reuse/recycle of material waste as resources, this work aims to understand how to apply circularity principles to, among others, the regeneration of wastescapes. The main focus is the development over time, and in particular the way how spatial planning and strategies respond to new unpredictable urgencies and opportunities related with territorial metabolisms. The book specifically focuses on living labs environments, where it is possible to tackle complex problems through a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach - including the use of digital spatial decision support environment – which could be able to include all the involved stakeholders. Through a spatial scope of circularity, this book describes several examples including among others ideas from different contexts such as Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium and Vietnam. Through including reflections on methodology and representation, as well as on solutions for circular and healthy metabolisms, the book provides an excellent resource to researchers and students.
