It is not impossible that the events which are herein recorded shall lead to a commercial revolution on the Pacific Coast. Certain it is that San Francisco will at last take the station which its natural advantages make inevitable. It will be in fact, as in name, the commercial metropolis of the Pacific Coast. We are looking only at the structure above ground. We are try ing to get more smoke from the chimney. We are looking at space instead of service, at profits instead of volume. With our eyes focused on the structure above ground, we have lost sight of those human resources, thrift, imagination, integrity, Vision and faith which make the structure possible. I feel that only by the business men can this foundation be strengthened before the inevitable fall comes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bryan, Sewall and Honest Money Will Bring Prosperity William jennings bryan, statesman and presidential candidate, was born in Salem, Marion county, Illinois, March 19, 1860, son Of Silas Lillard and Maria Jen mings Bryan. His first American ancestor came from Ire land, and settled in the tidewater section Of Virginia. It is known of this pioneer emigrant that he stood as a repre sentative citizen of the state, and that his descendants were classed among the well-to-do familiesengaged in the cultivation Of the soil. They took active interest in the politics of the commonwealth as Democrats, and represented their section in county and state affairs. As farmers, the Bryans Of Virginia were conspicuous for in dustry, frugality and hospitality. They were intensely rellglous, and as leading members of the Baptish church were looked upon as safe advisers on the social, political and moral questions Of their day. In 1752 Joseph T. Bryan left the tidewater section Of Virginia and pushed westward. He located on the side Of a moun tain, Where he found all the conditions necessary for a settler's home. From the site selected for his future dwelling, he looked down through a beautiful valley made fertile by the mountain stream that found its way to the bosom of the Rappahannock. Here he put up a log cabin after the fashion of the settlers, and fitted it for the home of his family, This house still stands as an ell to a more pretentious dwelling on the Side Of Oventop mountain, at the base of Marvey's Rock, the highest peak of the Blue Ridge mountains. About half a mile westward from the old homestead, on a narrow, rocky road, the Bryan meet ing-house, a large, rambling structure, still stands In about the same condition as When the family of the great-great. Book excerpt: "As part of the Treaty of Paris, in which Great Britain recognized the new United States of America, Britain ceded the land that comprised the immense Northwest Territory, a wilderness empire northwest of the Ohio River containing the future states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. A Massachusetts minister named Manasseh Cutler was instrumental in opening this vast territory to veterans of the Revolutionary War and their families for settlement. Included in the Northwest Ordinance were three remarkable conditions: freedom of religion, free universal education, and most importantly, the prohibition of slavery. In 1788 the first band of pioneers set out from New England for the Northwest Territory under the leadership of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what is now Marietta on the banks of the Ohio River. McCullough tells the story through five major characters: Cutler and Putnam; Cutler's son Ephraim; and two other men, one a carpenter turned architect, and the other a physician who became a prominent figure in American science. They and their families created a town in a primeval wilderness, while coping with such frontier realities as trees of a size never imagined, floods, fires, wolves, bears, even an earthquake, all the while negotiating a contentious and sometimes hostile relationship with the native people. Like so many of McCullough's subjects, they let no obstacle deter or defeat them. Drawn in great part from a rare and all-but-unknown collection of diaries and letters by the key figures, The Pioneers is a uniquely American story of people whose ambition and courage led them to remarkable accomplishments."--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: Pioneer Merchants of Singapore tells the stories of some of Singapore's earliest merchants, including Alexander Laurie Johnston, Edward Boustead, Alexander Guthrie, and eleven others, including Tan Che Sang, Dr Jose d'Almeida, and D S Napier. Much has been written about Sir Stamford Raffles and Lt. Col. Farquhar, but almost nothing has been published about these merchants of all races operating in Singapore during the first few years following its acquisition by the East India Company in 1819. It includes never-before-published information drawn from letters dating back to 1818. These, including letters from Johnston's first employee and business partner Andrew Hay and a previously unrecorded letter from Raffles himself, shed light on much which otherwise would have been lost to us.This book aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of the early days of Singapore and the challenges faced by its early residents. It is a must-read for those who are interested in the history of Singapore's early years as a trading colony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook presents Shakti Gawain's definition of prosperity, one that places importance on the fulfillment of our real desires rather than the amount of money we have. Most people equate prosperity with money — if they only had more of it, they would prosper. In this new, innovative look at self-fulfillment, personal-growth pioneer Shakti Gawain shows us the pitfalls of such thinking — how people, regardless of their wealth, eventually find money fails to offer true contentment. Shakti Gawain presents a new definition of prosperity, one that places importance on fulfillment of the heart and soul rather than on monetary gain. She dismantles the cause-and-effect relationship most people construct around money and happiness, without ignoring the important role money plays in our lives. She challenges us to pay attention to our deepest longings, and yet to discard false desires. Shakti shows us how to create true prosperity, which includes satisfying relationships, happiness, and fulfillment. Her unique method of self-examination helps readers recognize the paradoxical relationships they establish with money. Instead of either denying its value or giving it too much importance, Gawain shows how money can be used to teach people to identify where they need more balance in their lives, freeing them to pursue fulfilling relationships and personal satisfaction — the main ingredients of true prosperity. She speaks with authority and warmth as she sheds new understanding on a subject that concerns us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reveals how our monetary system reinforces scarcity, and how communities are already using new paradigms to foster sustainable prosperity. In the United States and across Europe, our economies are stuck in an agonizing cycle of repeated financial meltdowns. Yet solutions already exist, not only our recurring fiscal crises but our ongoing social and ecological debacles as well. These changes came about not through increased conventional taxation, enlightened self-interest, or government programs, but by people simply rethinking the concept of money. In Rethinking Money, Bernard Lietaer and Jacqui Dunne explore the origins of our current monetary system—built on bank debt and scarcity—revealing how its limitations give rise to so many serious problems. The authors then present stories of ordinary people and communities using new money, working in cooperation with national currencies, to strengthen local economies, create work, beautify cities, provide education, and more. These real-world examples are just the tip of the iceberg—over four thousand cooperative currencies are already in existence. The book provides remedies for challenges faced by governments, businesses, nonprofits, local communities, and even banks. It demystifies a complex and critically important topic and offers meaningful solutions that will do far more than restore prosperity—it will provide the framework for an era of sustainable abundance.
