Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Coles County Illinois When David Dryden started to Illinois from Farmington, Bedford County, Tennessee, he put my grandmother, Hannah Eveline Dry den on one of the horses, not hitched to the covered wagon, to help drive the cattle they were bringing to a new and strange country they had never seen be fore. This was June 10, 1834 and when my grandmother was 98 years old, she told the story of their journey northward as follows. Out where the skies are a trifle bluer, Out where friendship's a little truer, That's where the West begins. Out where a fresher breeze is blowing, Where there's laughter in every streamlet flowing, Where there's more of reaping and less of sowing. That's where the West begins. Out where the world is in the making, Where fewer hearts in despair are aching, That's where the West begins. Where there's more of singing and less of sighing, Where there's more of giving and less of buying, And a man makes friends without half trying, That's where the West begins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Pioneers and Pioneer Events of the State of Illinois: Including Personal Recollections of the Writer; Of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and Peter Cartwright, Together With a Brief Autobiography of the Writer I urged upon my uncle the privilege and duty even that rested with and upon him, to put his newspaper and fugi tive writings into final form for book publication, so that they could pass into the permanent literature of the State and not perish. It was easily seen that the terse and oft times quaint statements of facts and events had a peculiar attractiveness of expression of their own, and the honesty and candor that permeate every line of his writings doubly assure a recognition of value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Circuits: A Story of Illinois Life The next friend says, many of them are underdrawn. So to strike an average, I have left it as originally written. It is in no sense an autobiography. Names and places are mostly fictitious; yet the majority of the incidents are as I, and others saw and heard them. They did not always transpire in the order here given. I had a love for the hardy yeomanry of the ear lier days; for their honest, happy, off-hand man ners, modes of thought and speech. I was at home among them for years, enjoying their labor, humor, privations, pleasures and worship. I have aimed to make the characters original, fresh and alive with the buoyancy and vivacity of pioneer life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Pioneer Days in La Salle County, Illinois, and Poster Designs Commemorating the Washington Bi-Centennial 1932: By Grammar Grade Pupils of Village and Rural Schools, La Salle County, Illinois As a part of their participation in the celebration of the Washington Bi centennial this year the pupils in the rural and village schools were invited to design posters commemorative of the Father of His Country, and the eighth graders were privileged to try their hand again at telling a story of pioneer days. At the time the invitation was extended, it was expected that at least two hundred of the 1932 posters and stories could be reproduced in pamphlet form. But the financial stringency still continues and it is impossible to realize our expectations. Hence, many an interesting story and many an excellent poster had to be omitted in this pamphlet, much to the chagrin of the county superintendent and, no doubt, to the disappointment of many a worthy pupil. In the estimation of the county superintendent nothing that these smaller schools have done in recent years so definitely marks their praiseworthy ad vancement as the writing of these stories and the designing of these posters, for both are of the creative type that evidence intellectual growth. Likewise, both are on a markedly higher plane than was thought possible for grammar grade pupils only a few years ago. It is ardently hoped, however, that they represent a new era in school achievement, and that they but pave the way to even greater skill in the fine art of story telling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christiana and John Tillson moved from Massachusetts to central Illinois in 1822. Upon arriving in Montgomery County near what would soon be Hillsboro, they set up a general store and real estate business and began to raise a family. A half century later, in 1870, Christiana Tillson wrote about her early days in Illinois in a memoir published by R. R. Donnelley in 1919. The Tillsons lived quite ordinary lives in extraordinary times, notes Kay J. Carr, introducing this edition. They moved west and prospered in the land business at a time when America was being transformed from a rural, agricultural country into an urban, industrial nation. Their views and sensibilities, Carr says, might seem strange to us, but they were entirely normal to people in the early nineteenth century. Thus Tillson's memoir provides fascinating but believable snapshots of ordinary nineteenth-century American life.

Book excerpt: James McPherson’s classic book For Cause & Comrades explained “why men fought in the Civil War”—and spurred countless other historians to ask and attempt to answer the same question. But few have explored why men did not fight. That’s the question Paul Taylor answers in this groundbreaking Civil War history that examines the reasons why at least 60 percent of service-eligible men in the North chose not to serve and why, to some extent, their communities allowed them to do so. Did these other men not feel the same patriotic impulses as their fellow citizens who rushed to the enlistment office? Did they not believe in the sanctity of the Union? Was freeing men held in chains under chattel slavery not a righteous moral crusade? And why did some soldiers come to regret their enlistment and try to leave the military? ’Tis Not Our War answers these questions by focusing on the thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of average civilians and soldiers. Taylor digs deep into primary sources—newspapers, diaries, letters, archival manuscripts, military reports, and published memoirs—to paint a vivid and richly complex portrait of men who questioned military service in the Civil War and to show that the North was never as unified in support of the war as portrayed in much of America’s collective memory. This book adds to our understanding of the Civil War and the men who fought—and did not fight—in it.
