Book excerpt: These stories of how the first settlers came to Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana are from the searching of old family diaries, letters, census & church records, newspapers, and even a bit of gossip. Many missing links were found, as these families came from so many different national backgrounds. Personal stories are told of how this hardy pioneer stock transformed an uninhabitated land of bold praries & rugged cypress swamps into mud-daubed huts, farms, & eventually the cities we know today. "... the Old Spanish Trail passed through Southwest Louisiana in the 1500's from Vera Cruz, Mexico to St. Augustine, Florida, bringing a constant stream of visitors. Grandma LeBleau in Chloe, liked to tell about the visit of Frank & Jesse James one day... She fixed them a meal & one stood guard while the other ate. They offered her $50 for the meal, (and presumably her silence), but she told them she could not take money for feeding them...""... in 1803, when America bought the Louisiana Territory from France, the lands west of the Calcasieu River became a dividing "Neutral Strip"... One infamous free spirit that moved into this No Man's Land was known as John Doe. He made Mexican silver dollars which he traded off to anybody who was heading west. Later he moved to the other side of the strip and began counterfeiting American dollars..."".. those were wild days in the late 1700's and early 1800's, when pioneers coming into the Louisiana lowlands often found buccaneers along the moss shaded bayous. Pirate Jean Lafitte made several visits to the lakeside home of Charles Sallier... He was considered a hero of the War of 1812 by then, rather than an outlaw, for his help during the Battle of New Orleans...""...Johnson Moss was the grandson of John Jacob Ryan & became the first Sheriff of the new Calcasieu Parish in 1843. At one time he owned 2,000 acres ofproperty... known as Moss Bluff... beginning with the purchase of an old Spanish land grant for $465..."

Book Synopsis A Wetland Biography by : Gay M. Gomez
Download or read book A Wetland Biography written by Gay M. Gomez and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisiana's Chenier Plain is a 2,200-square-mile region of marshes and oak-covered ridges (cheniers) that stretches along the Gulf of Mexico from Sabine Lake to Vermilion Bay. Its inhabitants, some 6,000 people of Cajun and other ancestries, retain strong economic and cultural ties to the land and its teeming wildlife. They call it paradise...but it is a vulnerable paradise. In this multifaceted study, Gay Gomez explores the interaction of the land, people, and wildlife of the Chenier Plain, revealing both the uniqueness of the region and the challenges it faces. After describing the geography and history of the Chenier Plain, Gomez turns to the lifeways of its people. Drawing on their words and stories, she tells how the chenier dwellers combine modern occupations with traditional pursuits such as alligator and waterfowl hunting, fur trapping, and fishing. She shows how these traditions of wildlife use provide both economic incentives for conservation and a source of personal and place identity. This portrait of a "working wetland" reveals how wildlife use and appreciation can give rise to a stewardship that balances biological, economic, and cultural concerns in species and habitat protection.
Book Synopsis Always for the Underdog by : Keagan LeJeune
Download or read book Always for the Underdog written by Keagan LeJeune and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 241 pages. Book excerpt: Drawing from newspapers, court records, and a decade of interviews and observation, LeJeune offers a penetrating examination of the interplay between legend and place, exploring Smith's own life, this unique historical moment, and the place's mysterious landscape. The book also considers how contemporary festivals and other forms of cultural heritage employ the legend as a cultural recourse. To stay vibrant and meaningful, culture constantly re-makes itself; here, the outlaw occupies a vital role in the re-creation. --Book Jacket.
