Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas The aim of this book will be as Macaulay expressed it to make the past present, to bring the present near, to invest with the reality of human flesh and blood beings whom we are too much inclined to consider as personified qualities, rather than to rob history of its human element by a cataloguing of facts without effort to read their meaning. With Lord Acton, the sanest historic authority, we believe that History is the con science oi mankind, and have therefore set out thousands of facts as a potent influence in showing what the pioneers really did - their modus operandi - their hopes, joys and sorrows, asparts of an experience we are interested to know and from which we may one and all draw general lessons of moral and political wisdom. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XLII. The Rector Fam1ly. The Richters are an old family of the German Empire, widely dispersed in locality, of eminent respectability, and farfamed as thinkers and musical composers. Franz Zavier Richter of Strasburg, first gave musical prominence to the name, 1709-1789, as an author of many productions for instruments of all kinds. He was followed by Karl Gotlieb Richter of Berlin, 1728-1809, who acquired great celebrity as a musician in the service of Princess Amalia of Prussia, as organist of the Cathedral at Konigsburg, and as author of many concertinas for the piano and trios for two flutes and a bass. This fame of the Richters was further enhanced by Ernest Frederick Edward Richter of Leipsic, 1808-1879, Director of Music at the University of Leipsic. His musical works have an immense circulation. Another member of the family of great fame was Ernest Heinrich Leopold Richter, 1805-1876, of the Royal Institute of Berlin. The Catholic Church of the United States boasts a bishop, Henry Joseph Richter, who was born at Oldenburg in 1838. In German history they have also been noted as great soldiers and great merchants. In old German the word, Richter, means a judge, and its Anglicized form, Rector, carries the same idea in part, but is limited to ecclesiastical affairs. Richter is an old surname in Germany, and has been transplanted to England and the United States. In the latter country the word has been variously spelled, Richtor, Richter, Ricktar, Rechter, but is now almost exclusively spelled Rector. The coat of arms of the family was an eagle displayed sa, in dexter an olive branch, vert, and in sinister a thunderbolt, ppr. THE MIGRATION TO AMERICA. The first migration of any of the Richter family to America occurred as...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Dallas T. Herndon, Pub. 1922, Reprinted 2019, 1076 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-070-5. When Dallas T. Herndon became Secretary of Arkansas History Commission in 1911, he began to "realize that the state had no history that could be relied upon as authentic," although several state histories had been published, but whose authors did not have access to reliable sources of information. "With more and more people seeking information on the state, which often required hours and even days of research," Mr. Herndon in the Fall of 1920 entered into arrangements to begin work toward the publication of this three volume series. The Centennial History is deivided into three volumes. Volume #1 is concerned with the history of Arkansas from its earliest beginnings and is divided into seven major parts, beginning with the Indians, explorers, French and Spanish domination, etc. and concinting with Arkansas as a Territory, pioneer life, cutoms and final admission into the Union. In these seven major headings will also be found sections dealing with the Political History, Industrial History, Education, Military (the War with Mexico, Civil War, Reconstruction, etc.) and Local History, which is concerned with the formation of the counties, county officers, population, cities and towns, etc. Volumes #2 and #3 of this series contains Biographical Sketches of Prominent leaders and individuals in Arkansas up through the year 1922. As with Goodspeed Histories, it should be noted that these sketches contain a vast storehouse of family history and primary genealogical source material for the personwith Arkansas "Roots." Many of these sketches also carry these family histories back into the early 1880's and some instances to the late 1790's.
