Book Synopsis Legends of the Wild West by : Robert Edelstein
Download or read book Legends of the Wild West written by Robert Edelstein and published by Centennial Books. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several hundred years, the West had been the land of dreams, an extraordinary region of hope, expansion and opportunity where European countries—and then the young USA itself—sent their finest explorers to plant seeds in a seemingly untapped, open landscape. This spirit captured the popular imagination in the Wild West, those raucous 30 years between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of a new century. Within these pages, readers will explore true tales of rebels and heroes such as General George Custer, Buffalo Bill, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Annie Oakley, and Sitting Bull, among others. The Wild West was the American Dream on steroids. It was an age of gunfights and gold rushes, cowboys and Comanches, with the likes of Buffalo Bill, Jesse James and Billy the Kid making their names. It forged extraordinary legends and even bigger lies, with everything fueled by dime novels written back East that encouraged folks to grab their share of a promise that was difficult for this hard land to keep. This book looks at all these mythical characters, the start of the railroad across the nation, the cost it all dealt to the Native Americans whose land was lost, and the way Hollywood still keeps the dream alive. As historian Richard White says, “People could go west and no matter their failures elsewhere, they had an opportunity to remake themselves. It’s a symbol for a kind of individualism that actually doesn’t exist in the West, but mythically it does.”

Download or read book Czechs, the Heroes of the Wild West written by Lucie Heck and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chapter 1 embraces the history of the settlement of the American West and defines the commonly used terms West, Frontier, and Wild West. At the same time, it explains the starting conditions of Czech immigrants, firstly within the European context, and secondly upon their arrival in the United States. Chapter 2 makes use of contemporary as well as period sources, and maps the arrival and life of the first Czech settlers in the states of Iowa and Nebraska. Chapter 3 considers the literary portrayal of the American West and its heroes and the works of Ole Edvart Rolvaag and Willa Cather. It also touches upon the phenomenon of the American Myth and its subjects. Chapter 4 brings attention to the gender imbalance when portraying the Wild West pioneers and American Myth heroes. At the same time it acknowledges the importance of Willa Cather's regional writing. Her realistic and detailed depiction of the roles and accomplishments of pioneer women presents viable information that can hardly be found or deduced from other sources. With the help of Cather's fiction, an alternative but accurate picture of the West and its inhabitants arises", from introduction.
Download or read book Pioneers written by Rick Steber and published by Bonanza Publishing. This book was released on with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain men and fur traders were the first to travel the route that would one day become the Oregon Trail. In their wake came missionaries who wrote letters and reports describing the far side of the continent and praising the mild climate, healthful conditions and the deep, fertile soil. Historians recognize 1843 as the official beginning of the Oregon Trail. That spring a group of a thousand land-hungry pioneers with 120 wagons and 5,000 head of cattle departed from Elm Grove, Missouri. Some of their wagons were abandoned along the Snake plateau but other were brought to the Columbia River where flat-bottomed boats were built and floated through the dangerous rapids of the Columbia Gorge to the Willamette Valley. It took the pioneers from early spring until late fall to reach the far west. They threw together shelters and subsisted that first winter on fish, game and the generosity of their neighbors, both white and Indian. Come spring they cleared ground, tilled the virgin soil and planted crops. The heyday of the Oregon Trail occurred after gold was discovered in California in 1848; it is estimated one-quarter million pioneers traveled overland on the Oregon Trail. From these early emigrants the social fabric of the West was woven. Within a few years communities were established and schools and churches were built. Then came stage lines, mail deliveries, railroads, telegraph wires and the other trappings of the white man's civilization.
