Book excerpt: Colorado has some great ghost stories, and this book contains spirits, spooks, and sprites that are a colorful lot of characters. MaryJoy Martin brings them vividly into focus as she describes the San Juans marvelous mix of cultures, from ancient Puebolans, migratory gold seekers to the hungry immigrants straight off the boat. Woof and warp, these tales weave a unique tapestry that matches the mystery and majesty of the mountains. The majority of the tales originated before the 1920s, most going back to the gold rush days and earlier.

Book Synopsis Early San Juan County by : LaVerne Tate
Download or read book Early San Juan County written by LaVerne Tate and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Juan County was established in 1880 following the famous winter trek and steep descent through the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail to Bluff, Utah. Behind the settlement of this community by the San Juan River is a story of tenacity, determination, and hardship. The Hole-in-the-Rock was a sandstone crevice discovered fortuitously by pioneers when a wild ram escaped its pursuers and descended to the river by that route. After blasting, building up the grade, and lowering by ropes, the wagon train finally emerged through the crevice to the river below and finished the last difficult miles into Bluff. Miner and photographer Charles Goodman documented the early days of San Juan County, from the production of bricks and molasses to the establishment of Bluff Oil Company, and many of his unique images, dating from 1892 to 1913, are included in this volume.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneering in the San Juan: Personal Reminiscences of Work Done in Southwestern Colorado During the "Great San Juan Excitement" In this age of electricity, when men think quick, live fast and die young as a general rule, reminis cences are below par. Men prefer to look forward rather than backward. And yet we believe that it is well, at times, to take a look at the past, that we may see what progress Christianity has made in Colorado.
