Book excerpt: One of the main goals of intermediate energy nuclear physics, which serves an important role as a bridge between nuclear and particle physics, is to construct the theory of strong interaction phenomena in terms of conventional degrees of freedom (nucleons, deltas and mesons) as well as of quark degrees of freedom.The main topics to be discussed at this conference are the interaction of pions and other mesons with nuclei at intermediate energies and the role of mesonic degrees of freedom in nuclear reactions, including photon, hadron and heavy ion induced reactions. Both theoretical and experimental results will be included.Over the past two decades, the Meson Factories, including LAMPF, TRIUMF, and PSI, have provided us with systematic experimental information on hadron-hadron and hadron-nucleus dynamics. Major accelerators of JINR are also suitable for studying problems in Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics. At the present time, first experiments have been performed with the proton beams at the Moscow Meson Factory of INR. One of the purposes of this conference is to introduce the intermediate-energy physics community to the possibility of utilizing the facilities of JINR and INR during the next decade.

Book excerpt: In the deuteron, the simplest pion production mechanism is the quasifree process in which the pion is produced on a single nucleon, with the second nucleon acting as a spectator. More interesting mechanisms, however, are those in which both the nucleons are actively involved, as shown in Figs. 1b to 1d. In addition, there exist higher-order two-nucleon processes involving both ..pi..N and NN rescatterings. At T/sub ..pi../> 250 MeV, there is evidence that the basic production could proceed via intermediate ..pi..N- and ..pi pi..-resonances, including the ..delta..(1232) resonance. Considering the fact that the ..pi..N rescattering can also proceed through the formation of a ..delta..(1232), we then have a situation in which two ..delta..(1232) can be simultaneously present. Recently, G.E. Brown et al. have proposed a double-..delta.. model to explain certain features of pion absorption by nuclei. It seems useful to further examine this mechanism by use of other nuclear reactions, such as the ..pi..−d ..-->.. ..pi ... pi..−nn reaction. In this report, we only briefly describe our calculations of the quasifree process and ..pi.. production followed by ..pi..N rescattering. We have also omitted the distortion of the incoming pion wave. This approximation should not affect our conclusion concerning the relative importance of the two diagrams studied. (WHK).

Book excerpt: Two years ago, at the 12th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics held here in Snowbird, the authors presented WA80 limits on direct photon production in 200-GeV 32S + Au collisions. It was found that the results were consistent (within 1[sigma]) with the absence of an excess of photons over those that can be accounted for by the two-photon decay branches of [pi]° and [eta] mesons and by the small photon contributions from other radiative decays. They are in the process of finalizing the direct-photon production results from collisions of lead nuclei at 158 GeV/nucleon. The author briefly discusses the status of the analysis and gives some preliminary results at the end of this talk. However, most of this presentation is concerned with a very different aspect of the photon measurements: distributions of neutral pions. In contrast to direct photons which probe initial collision conditions, hadrons, such as neutral pions, interact strongly and decouple late in the reaction evolution and, thus, provide information concerning the system at freeze out. Transverse momentum spectra at low and intermediate p{sub T} relate to thermodynamic and hydrodynamic descriptions of the hot, dense systems. In addition, the high-p{sub T} region reflects the hard-scattering regime and may help one understand initial-state particle production by forming a bridge to proton-proton and proton-nucleus results. It follows that it is essential that the [pi]° measurements cover a large p{sub T} range.

Book excerpt: We report on scattering and reaction experiments on light nuclei using the [pi]-meson and proton beams from the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) and the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF). Differential cross sections, cross section asymmetries, and angular correlation functions have been measured in order to test models of the reaction mechanism and of nuclear structure. At LAMPF we have measured asymmetries for pion scattering from polarized [sup 13]C which are uniquely sensitive to the isoscalar spin density. In order to determine details of the reaction mechanism, we have obtained approval for a scattering experiment on polarized [sup 3]He for which the nuclear structure is very well known. We have completed data taking for two studies of elastic scattering of [pi][sup +] from [sup 6]Li and [sup l3]C. The detailed differential cross sections from these experiments will be used to constrain theoretical analyses of previous polarization experiments done at the Pierre-Scherrer-Institute (PSI) and at LAMPF. We have analyzed [pi]-triton coincidence events from the [sup 4]He([pi], [pi][prime] t)p reaction and have found evidence for direct triton knockout from [sup 4]He. We have extended these angular correlation measurements to higher energies and to [sup 2]H and [sup 3]He targets. At IUCF we have performed the first [sup 4]He(p, n) experiment at intermediate energies, T[sub p] = 100, 147, and 200 MeV, in a search for previously reported narrow states in [sup 4]Li of widths of [approx] 1 MeV. Within the statistics of the data we have found no evidence for such narrow structures.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to present new experimental information about modifications to the pion-nucleon single charge exchange interaction, [pi][sup +]n [yields][pi][sup 0] p or [pi][sup [minus]] p [yields] [pi][sup 0]n, due to the presence of other nucleons. The results of two experimental studies of pion single charge exchange in the three nucleon system near the [triangle]-resonance are presented. Both of these experiments were performed at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF), a division of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Each explored different aspects of pion single charge exchange in three body nuclei--[sup 3]He and [sup 3]H. Since the nuclear wavefunctions of the three nucleon systems are believed to be well understood, it should be possible to perform theoretical calculations of pion interactions with this system and compare their predictions with the experimental results.
