Book excerpt: Written by Hispanic and non-Hispanic scholars, these twelve essays -- six in English and six in Spanish -- disclose how over the past four centuries static and formulaic images of women in Hispanic art and literature have given way to lively and original portrayals. The leading ladies explored in this volume include women who are objects of the male gaze, women who gaze upon the male body, women who are characters, and women who are writers, painters, and filmmakers. The essayists offer a panorama that stimulates the senses and challenges assumptions as they reveal strategies used by both male and female writers and artists to unmask conventions, identify spaces, and remake paradigms.Marina Mayoral's introduction traces the representation of the beloved woman in Spanish lyric poetry from the Middle Ages to the present. The contributors and topics that follow include Amy Robinson on the silencing of female voices such as those of Cecilia Valdés and Carmen; Vilma Navarro-Daniels on the writer and historian Carmen Martín Gaite; Lynn Walford's analysis of Mario Vargas Llosa's leading ladies; Katherine Ford's exploration of Chicana writer Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera; Julia Carroll on Puerto Rican writer Giannina Braschi; George Thomas on the poetry of the seventeenth-century Mexican poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz; Alison Tatum-Davis on Carmen Laforet's Nada; Mónica Jato's examination of three female characters from Alfonso Sastre's trilogy Los crímenes extraños; Caryn Connelly on the collaborations of Mexican scriptwriter Paz Alicia Garcíadiego and film director Arturo Ripstein; Sharon Keefe Ugalde on cinema gender referents in the work of certain Spanish women poets; Carmen García de la Rasilla's study of female surrealist artists; and Mayte de Lama on three short-story characters of the fiction writer Marina Mayoral.Covering numerous genres, reaching across three continents, and using a variety of critical strategies, Leading Ladies presents a dazzling array of artistic endeavors in which women are of central importance.
Book Synopsis Women in International and Universal Exhibitions, 1876–1937 by : Rebecca Rogers
Download or read book Women in International and Universal Exhibitions, 1876–1937 written by Rebecca Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for the importance of bringing women and gender more directly into the dynamic field of exposition studies. Reclaiming women for the history of world fairs (1876-1937), it also seeks to introduce new voices into these studies, dialoguing across disciplinary and national historiographies. From the outset, women participated not only as spectators, but also as artists, writers, educators, artisans and workers, without figuring among the organizers of international exhibitions until the 20th century. Their presence became more pointedly acknowledged as feminist movements developed within the Western World and specific spaces dedicated to women’s achievements emerged. International exhibitions emerged as showcases of "modernity" and "progress," but also as windows onto the foreign, the different, the unexpected and the spectacular. As public rituals of celebration, they transposed national ceremonies and protests onto an international stage. For spectators, exhibitions brought the world home; for organizers, the entire world was a fair. Women were actors and writers of the fair narrative, although acknowledgment of their contribution was uneven and often ephemeral. Uncovering such silence highlights how gendered the triumphant history of modernity was, and reveals the ways women as a category engaged with modern life within that quintessential modern space—the world fair.
Book Synopsis Immanent Vitalities by : Kaira M. Cabañas
Download or read book Immanent Vitalities written by Kaira M. Cabañas and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new reality for the art object has emerged in the world of contemporary art: it is now experienced less as an autonomous, inanimate form and more as an active material agent. In this book, Kaira M. Cabañas describes how such a shift in conceptions of art’s materiality came to occur, exploring key artistic practices in Venezuela, Brazil, and Western Europe from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Immanent Vitalities expands the discourse of new materialisms by charting how artists, ranging from Gego to Laura Lima, distance themselves from dualisms such as mind-matter, culture-nature, human-nonhuman, and even Western–non-Western in order to impact our understanding of what is animate. Tracing migrations of people, objects, and ideas between South America and Europe, Cabañas historicizes changing perceptions about art’s agency while prompting readers to remain attentive to the ethical dimensions of materiality and of social difference and lived experience.

Book Synopsis Speaking Chicana by : D. Letticia Galindo
Download or read book Speaking Chicana written by D. Letticia Galindo and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies in the fields of applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and gender studies have focused upon Chicano linguistic communities as a monolith or have focused entirely upon male-centered aspects of language use, leaving a tremendous gap in works about Chicanas, for Chicanas, and by Chicanas as they pertain to language-related issues. Speaking Chicana bridges that gap, offering for the first time an extensive examination of language issues among Chicanas. Flowing throughout this collection of essays are themes of empowerment and suppression of voice. Combining empirical studies and personal narratives in the form of testimonios, the editors expand the boundaries of linguistic study to include disciplines such as art, law, women's studies, and literature. The result is a multifaceted approach to the study of Chicana speech—one that provides a significant survey of the literature on Chicanas and language production. Ten contributors—from linguistic to lawyer, from poet to art historian—discuss language varieties and attitudes; bilinguality; codeswitching; cultural identity and language; language in literature and art; taboo language; and legal discourse. Speaking Chicana celebrates the complexity and diversity of linguistic contexts and influences reflected in Chicana speech. Various essays explore the speech of rural women; the evolution of linguistic forces over time; the influence of U.S. public education; linguistic dilemmas encountered by literary authors and women in the legal profession; and language used by pachucas and pintas.Speaking Chicana represents a significant contribution, not only to sociolinguistics, but also to other fields, including women's studies, Chicana/o studies, anthropology, and cultural studies. Book Synopsis Gender and the Woman Artist in Early Modern Iberia by : Catherine Hall-van den Elsen
Download or read book Gender and the Woman Artist in Early Modern Iberia written by Catherine Hall-van den Elsen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the social constructs surrounding artistic production in early modern Iberia through the lenses of gender and class by examining the rarely considered contribution of creative women in Spain and Portugal between 1550 and 1700. Using the life-stage framework popular in texts of the period and drawing on a broad spectrum of materials including conduct guidebooks, treatises and conventual rules, this book examines the constraints imposed by gender-related social structures through microhistories of nuns, married, and unmarried women. The text spans class boundaries in its analysis of the work of painters, engravers, and sculptors, many of whom have until now eluded scholarly attention in English-language publications. An extensive bibliography promotes new avenues of inquiry into women’s contributions to the visual arts of the period. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, gender studies, women’s history, early modern Iberian studies, and Renaissance studies.
Book Synopsis Maruja Mallo and the Spanish Avant-Garde by : Shirley Mangini
Download or read book Maruja Mallo and the Spanish Avant-Garde written by Shirley Mangini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in English on Maruja Mallo, this volume is an insightful examination of the life and work of this seminal artist of the Spanish avant-garde. Previously sidelined by a culture that treated women as "insider-outsiders" and by her own mythmaking, Mallo no longer can be viewed as simply a muse to famous counterparts such as Salvador Dal?nd Federico Garc?Lorca; her role has been re-contextualized to demonstrate that she was a driving force in the flowering of Spanish culture through the 1920s and 1930s. The analysis of Mallo's unique life and extraordinary art is set against the complicated social and political backdrop of interwar Madrid. This book highlights the struggle of Mallo and other women artists against the rampant misogyny of both Spanish culture and the avant-garde community of the time. The effects of the Spanish Civil War are also analyzed-in Mallo's case, Franco's victory forced her into exile in South America for almost 30 years, with profound effects on her art and her life. Added to this rich context, the author's numerous interviews with members of the Mallo family provide essential new background material. Maruja Mallo and the Spanish Avant-Garde recasts this artist as a vital figure in the heretofore all-male establishment of the Spanish artistic vanguard.

Book Synopsis Mapping Gendered Routes and Spaces in the Early Modern World by : Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks
Download or read book Mapping Gendered Routes and Spaces in the Early Modern World written by Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did gender figure in understandings of spatial realms, from the inner spaces of the body to the furthest reaches of the globe? How did women situate themselves in the early modern world, and how did they move through it, in both real and imaginary locations? How do new disciplinary and geographic connections shape the ways we think about the early modern world, and the role of women and men in it? These are the questions that guide this volume, which includes articles by a select group of scholars from many disciplines: Art History, Comparative Literature, English, German, History, Landscape Architecture, Music, and Women's Studies. Each essay reaches across fields, and several are written by interdisciplinary groups of authors. The essays also focus on many different places, including Rome, Amsterdam, London, and Paris, and on texts and images that crossed the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, or that portrayed real and imagined people who did. Many essays investigate topics key to the ’spatial turn’ in various disciplines, such as borders and their permeability, actual and metaphorical spatial crossings, travel and displacement, and the built environment.
Book Synopsis Artemisia Gentileschi by : Jesse M. Locker
Download or read book Artemisia Gentileschi written by Jesse M. Locker and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important reassessment of the later career and life of a beloved baroque artist Hailed as one of the most influential and expressive painters of the seventeenth century, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–ca. 1656) has figured prominently in the art historical discourse of the past two decades. This attention to Artemisia, after many years of scholarly neglect, is partially due to interest in the dramatic details of her early life, including the widely publicized rape trial of her painting tutor, Agostino Tassi, and her admission to Florence’s esteemed Accademia del Disegno. While the artist’s early paintings have been extensively discussed, her later work has been largely dismissed. This beautifully illustrated and elegantly written book provides a revolutionary look at Artemisia’s later career, refuting longstanding assumptions about the artist. The fact that she was semi-illiterate has erroneously led scholars to assume a lack of literary and cultural education on her part. Stressing the importance of orality in Baroque culture and in Artemisia’s paintings, Locker argues for her important place in the cultural dialogue of the seventeenth century.
