Download or read book Painting Modernism written by Ivan A. Schulman and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies the influence of the plastic arts on the major writers of Latin American modernism. Painting Modernism demonstrates the influence of painting and sculpture on the work of the major writers of Latin American modernism. Through his analysis, Ivan A. Schulman, a foundational figure in the field, offers a concise and new interpretation of works by José Asunción Silva, Julián del Casal, Rubén Darío, José Juan Tablada, and José Martí. Traditional critical discourse on modernism has emphasized the nature of this movement in terms of its self-referentiality, fragmentation, elitist/escapist concepts, and subjective notions of cultural and aesthetic authenticity. Schulman breaks from this approach and examines these works as products of subjectively generated social/artistic practices that are inseparable from socioeconomic transformations and the chaotic cultural crises of the modern world.

Book Synopsis Literary Texts & the Arts by : Corrado Federici
Download or read book Literary Texts & the Arts written by Corrado Federici and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Texts & the Arts's sixteen essays explore numerous aspects of both the theoretical and applied relationships between textuality in the form of novels, plays, and poems and visuality in the form of the photographic, artistic, or cinematic image. Topics range from the linguistic and artistic attempts to express the inexpressible or the transcendent in notions of the sublime, where the essence of phenomena eludes the communicative and epistemological capacity of words and images, to postmodern representations of time and cinematic adaptations of literary texts. The photographic image is also examined as autonomous language that stands in opposition to the verbal and the written text and as a complementary mode that shares some communicative structures and modalities with the word while not being reducible to it. The thread that runs through all of the essays is the assertion of the «constructive» or power of the word (spoken, recited, written) and the image (representational, mimetic, nonrepresentational) to create meanings as well as the implication that, somehow, that capacity is partial because it is limited by the inherent nature of the means of expression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signifying "others" or signs of life? This book critically examines the ways in which crossing sex and gender is imagined in key cultural texts from contemporary Latin America. Unlike previous studies, Crossing Sex and Gender in Latin America does not hold that sexually diverse figures are always and only performative or allegorical and instead places the accent on questions of the presence or absence of an account of subjectivity in contemporary representation. Via analysis of selected films and literary works of Reinaldo Arenas, Mayra Santos-Febres, Pedro Lemebel, among others, the author reflects on the political implications of recent visions (1985-2005).
