Book excerpt: The concept for the Pima Air & Space Museum began in 1966 during planning for the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the creation of the United States Air Force. Earlier the commanders of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) the forerunner to today¿s 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) recognized that the historic World War II and 1950s era aircraft stored on the base were rapidly disappearing into smelters and that the flames were consuming not just metal but the aviation heritage of the country. On their own initiative base officials began to set aside examples of the many types of aircraft stored in MASDC¿s yards. These planes were placed along the base¿s fence line so that the public could see them through the fence. So begins the story of what is arguably today one of the most extensive and progressive aviation museums ¿ and one of the most exciting and comprehensive collections of aircraft ¿ anywhere the United States, if not the world.Over the last forty years the Pima Air & Space Museum has gathered one of the largest and best collections of aircraft in the United States. Visitors are treated to one of the most eclectic aviation collections to be found in any museum. Rather than focus on one nation, service, company, or type of aviation, Pima has tried to gather representative examples of all aspects of human flight regardless of their origins or purpose. This has resulted in a collection of military, commercial, and civil aircraft from around the world that displays the myriad of techniques and innovations that have been developed to carry people into the air. This is the story of Pima Air & Space Museum. A comprehensive, large-format, 354 page guide, featuring the history and technical data of every aircraft in this growing collection, lavishly illustrated with superb color photographs.

Book Synopsis Idaho Aviation by : Crista Videriksen Worthy
Download or read book Idaho Aviation written by Crista Videriksen Worthy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of aviation, Idahoans have employed aircraft to carry people, groceries, mail, freight, and livestock over inhospitable terrain. Idaho's airstrips are the stuff of dreams, offering pilots, anglers, hikers, and river-rafters access to deep wilderness less than an hour from the city. Aerial firefighting was born--and is based--in Idaho. Flight instructors in Idaho prepared thousands of pilots to fight in World War II. As the birthplace of United Airlines, with its famed "friendly skies," Idaho is one of the country's most aviation-friendly states. Government officials, private landowners, and volunteers have worked together to create and then preserve an infrastructure of big-city, small-town, and backcountry airstrips that are the envy of pilots worldwide.

Download or read book Chasing Arizona written by Ken Lamberton and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seemed like a simple plan—visit fifty-two places in fifty-two weeks. But for author Ken Lamberton, a forty-five-year veteran of life in the Sonoran Desert, the entertaining results were anything but easy. In Chasing Arizona, Lamberton takes readers on a yearlong, twenty-thousand-mile joyride across Arizona during its centennial, racking up more than two hundred points of interest along the way. Lamberton chases the four corners of Arizona, attempts every county, every reservation, and every national monument and state park, from the smallest community to the largest city. He drives his Kia Rio through the longest tunnels and across the highest suspension bridges, hikes the hottest deserts, and climbs the tallest mountain, all while visiting the people, places, and treasures that make Arizona great. In the vivid, lyrical, often humorous prose the author is known for, each destination weaves together stories of history, nature, and people, along with entertaining side adventures and excursions. Maps and forty-four of the author’s detailed pencil drawings illustrate the journey. Chasing Arizona is unlike any book of its kind. It is an adventure story, a tale of Arizona, a road-warrior narrative. It is a quest to see and experience as much of Arizona as possible. Through intimate portrayals of people and place, readers deeply experience the Grand Canyon State and at the same time celebrate what makes Arizona a wonderful place to visit and live.

Book Synopsis Just Plain Dorothy by : Dorothy Hunt Finley
Download or read book Just Plain Dorothy written by Dorothy Hunt Finley and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorothy Hunt Finley is an Arizona icon. As a child, she grew up in hard times on a cattle ranch in the wilderness without electricity, water, indoor plumbing or air conditioning. She lived through "the troubles," a time when her father and uncles were charged with killing a man during a real Old West shootout. From age four, she was on horseback herding cattle. She attended a one-room schoolhouse, became a teacher, principal, started a beer distribution company with her husband, and eventually became a major philanthropist. She has been on the boards of more than 50 nonprofit organizations and has received more than 30 major awards. She was the driving force in preventing the closure of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base by going to Washington, DC, and convincing senators to keep the base open. The book follows her life through the Great Depression, two world wars, her years at the University of Arizona, her time as CEO of Finley Distributing, and her fundraising and philanthropy for organizations like the Arizona Children's Home, the Tucson Children's Museum, the Tucson Medical Center and the Women's Studies Advisory Board. Born in 1920, at 88 years old, Dorothy Finley is still working with nonprofits and contributing to the growth of Arizona.
