Book excerpt: The concept for the Pima Air & Space Museum began in 1966 during planning for the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the creation of the United States Air Force. Earlier the commanders of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) the forerunner to today¿s 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) recognized that the historic World War II and 1950s era aircraft stored on the base were rapidly disappearing into smelters and that the flames were consuming not just metal but the aviation heritage of the country. On their own initiative base officials began to set aside examples of the many types of aircraft stored in MASDC¿s yards. These planes were placed along the base¿s fence line so that the public could see them through the fence. So begins the story of what is arguably today one of the most extensive and progressive aviation museums ¿ and one of the most exciting and comprehensive collections of aircraft ¿ anywhere the United States, if not the world.Over the last forty years the Pima Air & Space Museum has gathered one of the largest and best collections of aircraft in the United States. Visitors are treated to one of the most eclectic aviation collections to be found in any museum. Rather than focus on one nation, service, company, or type of aviation, Pima has tried to gather representative examples of all aspects of human flight regardless of their origins or purpose. This has resulted in a collection of military, commercial, and civil aircraft from around the world that displays the myriad of techniques and innovations that have been developed to carry people into the air. This is the story of Pima Air & Space Museum. A comprehensive, large-format, 354 page guide, featuring the history and technical data of every aircraft in this growing collection, lavishly illustrated with superb color photographs.

Download or read book Japan 1945 written by Clayton K. S. Chun and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “what if?” look at allied plans to invade Japan, and the story of the creation and use of the atomic bomb. In this 200th Campaign series title Clayton Chun examines the final stages of World War II as the Allies debated how to bring about the surrender of Japan. He details Operation Downfall (the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands). Chun explains why these plans were never implemented, before examining the horrific alternative to military invasion – the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear weapons. With a series of illustrations, including detailed diagrams of the atomic bombs, a depiction of the different stages of the explosions and maps of the original invasion plans, this book provides a unique perspective of a key event in world history.

Book Synopsis Idaho Aviation by : Crista Videriksen Worthy
Download or read book Idaho Aviation written by Crista Videriksen Worthy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of aviation, Idahoans have employed aircraft to carry people, groceries, mail, freight, and livestock over inhospitable terrain. Idaho's airstrips are the stuff of dreams, offering pilots, anglers, hikers, and river-rafters access to deep wilderness less than an hour from the city. Aerial firefighting was born--and is based--in Idaho. Flight instructors in Idaho prepared thousands of pilots to fight in World War II. As the birthplace of United Airlines, with its famed "friendly skies," Idaho is one of the country's most aviation-friendly states. Government officials, private landowners, and volunteers have worked together to create and then preserve an infrastructure of big-city, small-town, and backcountry airstrips that are the envy of pilots worldwide.
