Book excerpt: "The 2010 Pilot Source Study, commissioned to research the success of pilots in initial training for Part 121 operations, analyzed the training performance of 2,156 new-hire pilots in the years 2005-2009. Six regional airlines provided data that was mined from human resource and pilot training files. Five university researchers independently analyzed the data and integrated their results. The study expressed success in terms of fewer extra training events and fewer non-completions in regional airline training. Statistically, the best performing pilots were those who had light instructor certificates, graduated from collegiate accredited flight programs, received advanced (post-Private) pilot training in college, graduated with collegiate aviation degrees (any aviation discipline), and had between 500 and 1,000 preemployment flight hours. Pilot source characteristics that had no significance in regional airline pilot training success were: having a non-aviation college degree and having prior corporate pilot or airline pilot experience."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "The 2012 Pilot Source Study (Phase III) was a continuation of the 2010 Pilot Source Study (Smith, Bjerke, NewMyer, Niemczyk & Hamilton, 2010), using the same research design with a new data set containing no duplicate records. University faculty and students assisted seven regional airlines to enter data on 4,024 pilots hired between 2005 and 2011. New-hire pilots' college and piloting backgrounds defined their input (Source) variables. Training and first year operations data defined the output (Success) variables. Identifying information for pilots and participating airlines was removed fromthe data sets, and records were combined into a single data set for independent analysis by five researchers. Results were verified by two independent researchers from the University of Central Florida (a non-affiliated university). Results showed considerable consistency between the 2010 Pilot Source Study and the 2012 Pilot Source Study regarding initial pilot training at a regional air carrier. The study found that pilots entering the industry with an aviation-specific college degree, particularly a degree froman AABI-accredited flight program, performed better in initial training than those with no degree or a non-aviation degree. The results also indicated that a pilot's background, such as having a CFI certificate and obtaining advanced training from a collegiate aviation program, is an indicator of success in training. One important result was that commercial pilots had more completions than pilots with an ATP certificate. On the other hand, total flight hours produced inconclusive results."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "This study analyzed the records of 420 regional airline pilots who went through training between 2005 and 2010 and found the pilot source (background) factors that affected success in regional airline initial training, initial operating experience, first-year line observations, and first-year recurrent training. Results showed that pilots who had a college degree, a degree in aviation, a flight degree accredited by Aviation Accreditation Board International, a flight instructor certificate, or between 500 and 1,000 total hours were more likely to complete training."--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: The commercial aviation industry is a major part of the U.S. transportation infrastructure and a key contributor to the nation's economy. The industry is facing the effects of a reduced role by the military as a source of high-quality trained personnel, particularly pilots and mechanics. At the same time, it is facing the challenges of a changing American workforce. This book is a study of the civilian training and education programs needed to satisfy the work-force requirements of the commercial aviation industry in the year 2000 and beyond, with particular emphasis on issues related to access to aviation careers by women and minorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Flying a drone as a "remote pilot-in-command” for non-hobby operations requires a "Remote Pilot Certificate” issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). You must successfully complete the FAA Knowledge Exam to earn a remote pilot certificate with a "small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS)” rating. This book is your key -- ASA’s Remote Pilot Test Prep is the best resource for successful test-taking and safe small UAS operations. This book is a comprehensive preparation, study and test tool for the remote pilot certificate ("Unmanned Aircraft General - Small") FAA Knowledge Exam. Rely on the time-proven and dependable ASA Test Prep Series to prepare for your exam; the rating requirements for the certificate are explained in detail and test material is expertly organized into chapters based on subject matter. This topical study promotes understanding and aids recall to provide an efficient study guide. Topics covered are FAA regulations, the National Airspace System, weather, loading and performance, and operations. This book is particularly helpful for drone operators interested in earning a remote pilot certificate, for Remote Pilot Aircraft (RPA) applicants, unmanned aircraft system (UAS) training programs preparing applicants for FAA exams, self-study readers interested in learning more about commercial unmanned aircraft operations, and existing (manned aircraft) pilots who want to learn more about the drone and UAS operations sharing the National Airspace System. Included are instructional text and illustrations, questions, answer stems, correct answers, explanations and references for further study. When you’re done studying, you can then take up to 5 practice tests with ASA’s online simulated testing program at no additional cost (codes are provided to enter at the ASA practice-test website).

The series is designed in a "fast-track" format for increased comprehension and retention of the studied materials. This guide also lists and identifies all the FAA Learning Statement Codes (LSC) that the FAA uses on their Knowledge Test Reports, which are useful for test takers to find out what their weak areas are if they missed any questions on their FAA exams. This volume of the series deals with both parts of the "Airframe" section of the FAA Knowledge Requirements for Aviation Maintenance Technicians.
