Both books can be purchased together as a set, Domestic Abuse Safety Planning with Young Children: A 'Pilgrim’s Bumpy Flight' Storybook and Professional Guide [9781032357997] Pilgrim is a little plane who loves flying through the sky and zooming through big hoops with their friends. At home, however, Pilgrim experiences frightening behaviour from Jumbo, who represents the perpetrating parent, that makes them feel scared and sad. Pilgrim is comforted and guided by Jet, who represents the victim/survivor parent, to think about safety and what to do when frightening things are happening. The trauma a young child may experience from domestic abuse can impact their entire developing system, making them feel worried, frightened, and unsafe. Safety planning is an essential component of direct work with children, offering a way to help them vocalise their feelings and understand what to do when something does not feel right, and this storybook is a key vessel for communication and exploration. The story, which is rhyming and engaging, enables young children to engage in the narrative in a non-threatening way. This book aims to be accessible to all children from all families where safety planning is needed as such the characters in it are non-gendered. This beautifully illustrated storybook is a crucial tool for the early years sector, education staff and those working in children’s services, including safeguarding officers, family support workers, social workers and children’s IDVAs. This book is designed to be used alongside the companion guidebook, Domestic Abuse Safety Planning with Young Children: A Professional Guide. Both books should be used in tandem with agency policy, procedure and guidance.

Book excerpt: Delayed Pilgrims is the story of two Austrian physician immigrants, Walt and Linda Wagner. In the United States they first worked in medical centers and soon found themselves caught in a web of infighting among superiors. Tired of the whims of departmental intrigues, the Wagners left and after overcoming numerous obstacles, practiced medicine in the countryside. In an occasionally bumpy yet enduring marriage they raised two boys who asked many questions about the meaning of human existence. With subtle humor the story shows their struggle to find a niche in the New World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French travel writer and exotic novelist Pierre Loti (1850-1923), in his day the youngest member elected to the Academie Francaise, had dreamt of visiting the ruins of Angkor when, as a child, he came across illustrations of them among some papers belonging to his elder brother, who had served in Indochina in the navy. Loti, whose real name was Julien Viaud, was a full-time professional naval officer and was able to realize his childhood dream of going to Angkor in 1901 when his ship stayed some time in Indochinese waters. Though the time he spent at Angkor was brief, he writes captivatingly about the glory of the temples and their magnificent reliefs hidden in the jungle. He was also able to visit a royal mausoleum built by King Norodom, and describes a reception given for him at the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh on his return journey to Saigon. Loti's book first appeared in French in 1912 and was translated into English the following year, with the inappropriate title Siam. Michael Smithies has revised this translation, adding footnotes and a new Introduction.

Book excerpt: John Tilden's glory days are far behind him, and now it seems like all he has is the monotony of every day living. He certainly thought there'd be more to it than his ramshackle Oklahoma farm and a mundane job coaching basketball at his old high school. He questions his fatherhood skills too: his oldest son won't speak to him, his younger son wants to quit the basketball team, and now his daughter wants to go out on dates. He loves his wife, but the marriage has settled into complacency. Now his twentieth high school reunion looms and he has agreed to play in an exhibition game at the reunion, which is sure to be a wretched joke. And his ex-girlfriend's back in town, newly single. Twenty years is plenty long enough for a man to mope after what might have been. It's time for John to make himself understand that.

Book excerpt: They come to Omaha by the tens of thousands, flocking to an annual meeting that has become legendary for investors, businesspeople, and fans of one of the most savvy capitalists on the planet. They come to eat steak, buy furniture at a discount, and bask in the brilliance of value investor extraordinaire, Warren Buffet. Hedge fund founder, financial blogger, and professional skeptic Jeff Matthews got his own highly-coveted ticket to the Berkshire Hathaway meeting held only for shareholders and their guests--and proceeded to post reports on his blog, offering tempting glimpses into the much-discussed meeting. Now Matthews delivers a full-length account of his adventures at this infamous financial hoedown. In addition to offering a thoroughly entertaining first-hand account of Berkshire Hathaway's meeting, he answers questions investor's are asking, including: Does Buffett's famed penny-pinching cripple his companies? Why does Buffet--a bridge partner and best friend of Bill Gates--not own any technology stocks? How does the extremely rational Buffett square his well-known social progressiveness with his lily-white audience of investors? Is Buffet really an "Oracle"? What information, insights, and ideas do the meeting's attendees pick up-and how do they put this information to use in their own investments? Will Berkshire-Hathaway survive his death? Matthews also applies his financial acumen to harvesting potent lessons from his experiences that you can use as you survey the investment field, from finding how the world’s greatest investor evaluates not only businesses but the people who run them, to the importance of “just reading and thinking” and the value of having a smart, cynical partner. With the dispatches from this exclusive financial carnival, Pilgrimage to Warren Buffett's Omaha puts you at the forefront of an investor's dream come true. "There are very few secrets to be revealed about a man who really doesn’t have many secrets. But this book does take you inside that secret place – the Mecca of the Midwest. It’s very easy to read and full of classic Buffett-isms – well worth the pilgrimage for those of us who don’t own any Berkshire Hathaway shares or for anyone who wants to learn more about investing from the man who says the first rule of investing it to, 'read everything.'" --CNBC.COM
