Book Synopsis Pilgrim Days by : Alastair MacKenzie
Download or read book Pilgrim Days written by Alastair MacKenzie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go, Always a little further; it may be, Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow.' If there was ever anyone who went a little further, a little beyond, it was Alastair MacKenzie. In a career spanning 30 years, MacKenzie served uniquely with the New Zealand Army in Vietnam, the British Parachute Regiment, the British Special Air Service (SAS), the South African Defence Force's famed ParaBats, the Sultan of Oman's Special Forces and a host of private security agencies and defence contractors. MacKenzie lived the soldier's life to the full as he journeyed 'the Golden Road to Samarkand'. This extraordinary new work from the author of Special Force: The Untold Story of 22nd Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) vividly documents the experience of infantry combat in Vietnam, life with the Paras, the tempo of selection for UK Special Forces, covert SAS operations in South Armagh and SAS Counter Terrorist training on the UK mainland, vehicle-mounted Pathfinder Brigade insertions into Angola and maritime counter-terrorism work in Oman.

Download or read book The Pilgrims' Way written by Leigh Hatts and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook details the Pilgrims' Way, an historic pilgrimage route to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, home of the shrine of the martyred archbishop, St Thomas Becket. The route is described both from Winchester in Hampshire (138 miles) and London's Southwark Cathedral (90¼ miles), with an optional spur to Rochester Cathedral. With relatively easy walking on ancient byways, the route from Winchester is presented in 15 stages of 5-14 miles: it can be comfortably completed in under a fortnight. It follows a major chalk ridge through scenic countryside, taking in characterful towns and villages and historic churches. The route from Southwark is described in 10 stages and includes a visit to the ruined Lesnes Abbey. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:50,000 OS mapping, advice on making the most of a trip and information on the historical background to the pilgrimage, key historical figures and local points of interest. Accommodation listings and details of facilities and transport links can be found in the appendices. Pilgrimages to Becket's shrine began within a few years of the his death in 1170, although Canterbury was a popular destination even before this time due to the nearby shrine of St Augustine. The route has featured in literature, drama and film, and forms the setting for Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Middle English work, The Canterbury Tales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book describes the rich and varied influences on the author's life and poetry: the black Baptist church; the books lining her minister father's study; her meetings with outstanding African Americans such as ministers Charles A. Tindley, composer of 150 hymns, and S.S. Jones, who had the vision to know that black life in Oklahoma was important to record on film; poets and writers Countee Cullen, Sterling Brown, and Oscar Micheaux; and her lifelong acquaintance with Langston Hughes." "Begin with her birth at the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. Grow up with her during the Great Depression, which, in spite of its negative effects, still allowed many joys of a Thirties childhood. Laugh with her about childhood pranks, and witness her emergence as a precocious poet whose first poem was published at the age of thirteen. Witness the contrast in her early years as the only black child in her class in one of the most racist cities of the North and her adolescence in all-black historic Sumner High School in St. Louis. Follow her to Virginia State College during World War II, and then to Detroit in 1946 as a young bride. Get to know her family. Share her beliefs and values, and understand the positive impact she has had on others through her poetry, her teaching, and her editing and publishing of numerous books by other African American poets."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Pynchon's Against the Day by : Jeffrey Severs
Download or read book Pynchon's Against the Day written by Jeffrey Severs and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of criticism devoted to Pynschon's massive 2006 novel, Pynchon's Against the Day: A Corrupted Pilgrim's Guide gathers new work by more than a dozen scholars, offering readings informed by the newest developments in narratology, genre studies, ecocriticism, globalism, and the histories of science and religion. This title also offers fresh perspectives on divisive issues within Pynchon studies, such as anarchism, gender, and reviewers' reception of his recent work. What emerges is a novel that will come to be seen, these essays argue, as a major part of Pynchon's storied legacy and a key work of the "late Pynchon."
