Book Synopsis Transport and the industrial city by : Peter Maw
Download or read book Transport and the industrial city written by Peter Maw and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first scholarly study of the contribution of canals to Britain’s industrial revolution. Although the achievements of canal engineers remain central to popular understandings of industrialisation, historians have been surprisingly reticent to analyse the full scope of the connections between canals, transport and the first industrial revolution. Focusing on Manchester, Britain’s major centre of both industrial and transport innovation, it shows that canals were at the heart of the self-styled Cottonopolis. Not only did canals move the key commodities of Manchester’s industrial revolution –coal, corn, and cotton – but canal banks also provided the key sites for the factories that made Manchester the ‘shock city’ of the early Victorian age. This book will become essential reading for historians and students interested in the industrial revolution, transport, and the unique history of Manchester, the world’s first industrial city.

Book Synopsis Industrial Enlightenment by : Peter M. Jones
Download or read book Industrial Enlightenment written by Peter M. Jones and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Enlightenment explores the transition through which England passed between 1760 and 1820 on the way to becoming the world’s first industrialised nation. In drawing attention to the important role played by scientific knowledge, it focuses on a dimension of this transition which is often overlooked by historians. The book argues that in certain favoured regions, England underwent a process whereby useful knowledge was fused with technological ‘know how’ to produce the condition described here as Industrial Enlightenment. At the forefront of the process were the natural philosophers who entered into a close and productive relationship with technologists and entrepreneurs. Much of the evidence for this study is drawn from the extraordinary archival record of the activities of Matthew Boulton (1728–1809) and his Soho Manufactory. The book will appeal to those keen to explore the dynamics of change in eighteenth-century England, and to those with a broad interest in the cultural history of science and technology.

Book Synopsis Carriers and Coachmasters by : Dorian Gerhold
Download or read book Carriers and Coachmasters written by Dorian Gerhold and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roads and road transport before the turnpikes have had a bad press, but little attempt has previously been made to investigate what road services for goods and passengers were really like. This important new book presents a strikingly different picture from the traditional one: a large network of road services which were reliable and regular in both summer and winter. Surprising conclusions are drawn about the state of the roads, the impact of the earliest turnpikes, the failure of stage-coach speeds to increase between the 1650s and 1750s, and the sudden increase in those speeds in the 1760s. A rich collection of illustrations, including many documents, photographs and contemporary drawings, enhances this splendid work. This impressive book examines the London carriers and stage-coach men, and their customers, from the 1650s to the 1760s, when turnpikes began to have a significant effect. It will transform conventional views of how the metropolis and provinces were linked in the period preceding the Industrial Revolution, and is both essential reading for local and transport historians alike.

Book Synopsis Echoes of Old Lancashire by : William Edward Armytage Axon
Download or read book Echoes of Old Lancashire written by William Edward Armytage Axon and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1899 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface This volume is intended for those who find it pleasant, at times, to wander in the byways of topography and local literature. The development of Lancashire, especially in its relation to modern industrial life, has been told by more than one able historian, and all that is here attempted is to glean in the ample harvest fields. The bygone customs, forgotten worthies, outworn superstitions, historical episodes and travellers' tales here recorded, will, it is hoped, not be without interest. If some of the articles seem more modern than the title would strictly justify, it must be remembered that the changes in the condition of the County Palatine have been so rapid that many things have become obsolete in the life time of the existing generation.
Book Synopsis A History of the University of Manchester, 1973-90 by : Brian S. Pullan
Download or read book A History of the University of Manchester, 1973-90 written by Brian S. Pullan and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of history of the University of Manchester since 1951. It spans 17 critical years in which public funding was contracting, student grants were diminishing, instructions from the government and the University Grants Commission were multiplying and universities feared for their reputations in the public eye. It provides a frank account of the University's struggle against these difficulties and its efforts to prove the value of university education to society and the economy. The volume describes and analyses not only academic developments and changes in the structure and finances of the University, but the opinions and social and political lives of the staff and their students as well. feminism, free speech, ethical investment, academic freedom and the quest for efficient management. The author draws on offical records, staff and student newspapers and personal interviews with people who experienced the University's very different ways. With its wide range of academic interests and large student population, the University of Manchester was the biggest unitary university in the country and its history illustrates the problems faced by almost all British universities. 1951-73, should appeal to past and present staff of the University and its alumni and to anyone interested in the debates surrounding higher education in the late 20th century.
